Apple new iPad set for September; Apple still adjusting specs for next-gen iPad mini

“Apple is expected to announce its fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad in September as scheduled, while its next-generation iPad mini reportedly may receive further upgrades in specifications, according to sources from the upstream supply chain,” Max Wang and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

“The new [fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad] features a slimmer bezel design to allow a bigger viewing area, while the number of LED tubes used for the device has been reduced from two to one, and battery longevity is also improved,” Wang and Tsai report. “As for the new 7.9-inch iPad mini, the sources pointed out that Apple is still considering whether to adopt a Retina Display for the device, and if the company decides to do so, the product’s release may be delayed to the end of the fourth quarter.”

MacDailyNews Take: Ooh, that should be great for the stock price (sarcasm).

Wang and Tsai report, “Meanwhile, Apple has also been asking its upstream supply partners to further shrink the next-generation iPad mini’s bezel, aiming to push a bezel-less design similar to that of Samsung and HTC’s large-size smartphones.”

  1. Umm, Apple is “asking” its suppliers to reduce the size of the mini’s bezel to be more similar to a Samsung tablet? How polite! I wonder if they’ll comply? /sarcasm

  2. “The new [fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad] features a slimmer bezel design to allow a bigger viewing area”
That reads like Apple would be lowering the pixel density.
I don’t feel that would happen, I think they would just pull in the edges of the device, making it, over all, a little smaller and lighter. The display area would stay the same size. Of course, I could be wrong. 😉

  3. My prediction:
iPad – Lighter, faster, more battery life, thinner, design similar to the iPad mini.
IPad mini – Lighter, faster, more battery life. No Retina.

Both will be announced on the same day (September) and available on the same day (October).

  4. Bogus…report.
9.7 inch ipad reducing bazel to increase viewing area? Lol
9.7 is the size of the screen.. If they increase viewing area .. It wont be 9.7 anymore.

    1. Don’t confuse an anal-cyst with logic or critical thinking. . . It makes it harder to use the orifice this stuff spouts from for its normal function.
