Apple today announced iPhone 5, the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, completely redesigned to feature a stunning new 4-inch Retina display; an Apple-designed A6 chip for blazing fast performance; and ultrafast wireless technology*—all while delivering even better battery life.** iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system with over 200 new features including: the all new Maps app with Apple-designed cartography and turn-by-turn navigation; Facebook integration; Passbook organization; and even more Siri features and languages.
“iPhone 5 is the most beautiful consumer device that we’ve ever created,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in the press release. “We’ve packed an amazing amount of innovation and advanced technology into a thin and light, jewel-like device with a stunning 4-inch Retina display, blazing fast A6 chip, ultrafast wireless, even longer battery life; and we think customers are going to love it.”
iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone in the world, with an all-new 7.6 mm anodized aluminum body that is 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than iPhone 4S. Designed with an unprecedented level of precision, iPhone 5 combines an anodized aluminum body with diamond cut chamfered edges and glass inlays for a truly incredible fit and finish.
The new 4-inch Retina display on iPhone 5 delivers even more pixels than iPhone 4S, making the already incredible Retina display even better. By making the screen taller, not wider, iPhone 5 is just as easy to use with one hand so you can tap, type and scroll the same way you always have, while enjoying even more of your content including amazing apps optimized for the larger Retina display, widescreen HD video, a full five days of your Calendar and more of every web page.
iPhone 5 supports ultrafast wireless standards including LTE and DC-HSDPA, so you can browse, download and stream content even faster. To support the latest LTE technology, Apple has pioneered a unique single-radio LTE solution that provides blazing fast speeds while fitting perfectly into the new remarkably thin design. iPhone 5 features dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support for a wireless experience up to 150 Mbps.***
The all-new A6 chip was designed by Apple to maximize performance and power efficiency to support all the incredible new features in iPhone 5, including the stunning new 4-inch Retina display—all while delivering even better battery life. With up to twice the CPU and graphics performance, almost everything you do on iPhone 5 is blazing fast for launching apps, loading web pages and downloading email attachments.
The 8 megapixel iSight® camera is the most popular camera in the world and with iPhone 5, it’s even better. The new camera is completely redesigned with incredible optical performance, yet amazingly it’s 25 percent smaller than the camera in iPhone 4S. The new iSight camera in iPhone 5 features a sapphire crystal lens cover that is thinner and more durable than standard glass with the ability to provide crystal clear images. The new panorama feature lets you capture jaw-dropping panorama images of up to 28 megapixels by simply moving the camera across a scene in one smooth motion. New video features include improved stabilization, video face detection for up to 10 faces and the ability to take still photos as you record. A new FaceTime® HD front facing camera makes FaceTime calls incredibly clear and can also be used for self portraits and recording 720p HD video. iPhone 5 also allows you to share photos with friends and family using iCloud’s Shared Photo Streams.
iPhone 5 features the new Lightning™ connector that is smaller, smarter and more durable than the previous connector. The all-digital Lightning connector features an adaptive interface that uses only the signals that each accessory requires, and it’s reversible so you can instantly connect to your accessories. The Lightning-to-30-pin Adapter is also available to connect iPhone 5 to legacy 30-pin accessories.****
iPhone 5 introduces new enhanced audio features including a new beam-forming, directional microphone system for higher quality sound, while background noise fades away with new noise canceling technology. iPhone 5 now includes support for cellular wideband audio for crisper word clarity and more natural sounding speech. Wideband audio will be supported by over 20 carriers worldwide at launch. iPhone 5 comes with the new Apple EarPods™ featuring a breakthrough design for a more natural fit and increased durability, and an incredible acoustic quality typically reserved for higher-end earphones.

Great now we have a new iPhone with a bigger screen and 700,000 apps THAT DON’T FIT THAT SCREEN.
Well done Apple.
Old apps have a minor letterboxing. It was shown today and is really unobtrusive. Also, for a developer to upgrade their app is very easy. If you don’t have any custom views, you really don’t have to do anything except recompile your app. Custom views need to be converted to the new resolution, which doesn’t take long either.
Oh come on, that is ridiculous. There must be 100,000 games out there that need major reworking to fit this new screen.
Oh come on, it’s not that big of a deal. Certainly it’s an order of magnitude easier than working with all the Android variations.
All the existing apps fit the screen. They just don’t all FILL the screen yet. They will either be updated or they won’t. It was the same situation as we had with the introduction of the retina display for both the iPhone and iPad. In other words, NOT an issue.
So my statement was correct.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY 700,000 APPS THAT DON’T FIT THAT SCREEN.
It is not an issue if you are not a developer, that has to redo all his apps, because all those arrogant rotten spoiled asshole iPhone 5 users will give 1 star ratings because an app does not fill their latest iShit device screen.
Uber-react much!??
Did you develop an iPhone app for 6 months that now needs complete rework?
I did, as$hole.
No, your statement is STILL FALSE. All 700,000 apps WILL FIT the screen. All the existing apps use fewer pixels and will fit easily. What you should say is that many existing apps won’t FILL the screen.
If you are a developer you should be used to updating for changes like this.
So by your logic if my shoe size is 39 a shoe size 43 will fit me?
Dumb ass.
Who are you Maxwell Smart? You don’t wear phones on your feet.Your app won’t fall out of the phone because the screen is now too big.
Why bother with logic if you won’t even crack a dictionary?
Dumb ass.
Hey moron, go somewhere else and try to convince that the 700,000 apps fit the new screen you idiot.
They don’t fit.
Apple’s dumbest design decision ever.
The people that were looking for a bigger screen didn’t get want they asked for and the other that don’t care get 700,000 apps that don’t fit the screen.
This model should be the 5s for shit.
I don’t have to convince anyone moron. You just need to learn that fill and fit aren’t the same thing. They don’t fill. It my well prove to be a poor choice, but movies and tv shows will display better than they do at the current aspect ratio. Like all designs there are trade-offs. The downsides of a widescreen under 7 inches are very few because they are already to small to type effectively in landscape mode.
If they had done a widescreen iPad I would be more concerned (unless it were say 12″-13″).
The problem isn’t that 700,000 apps won’t fit the screen — they all will (perhaps with letterboxing). The problem I see (fragmentation!) is that newer apps might not support the older screen sizes. At the very least, Apple just created a lot of work for developers.
Sadly, fragmentation is the price of progress.
And how is it progress to introduce to the iPhone the one major problem that is making developers leave the Anrdoid platform … FRAGMENTATION….!!!
How is that progress again?
I’m patenting the whine to beat all whines:
“In shocking news today Apple announced that they are suing themselves for being slavish copiers of their earlier products.”
No NFC
No Figerprint recognition
No Wireless Charging
No Built-In projector
No Fun :p
Interesting to see that the FAQ on the Apple site confirms that the iPhone 5 will use nano SIM cards.
Yeah… Nano-SIM
iPhone 5 is not compatible with existing micro-SIM cards.
There goes a few million sales that will not happen worldwide, because you can’t put in a standard chip.
Let us correct you again, uberidiot! Nano sim is a STANDARD!!!!
And why would it stop anyone from getting this phone anyway….just go to your provider and he will PROVIDE.
God! What an uber-brainless kraut you are.
Because you dumb ass don’t know that there are millions of people outside of your little Mickey mouse country where their local provider does not have a nano chip.
So that’s when you just get the little adaptor. It’s a little tray the size of the old sim, and the new nano sim sits in it and it works just fine. You didn’t think they had fucking PLANS for that? You REALLY thought APPLE… A P P L E overlooked something as fundamental as THAT?
gtfo
Uber-Dick.
I want to know if stage chimp Steve Ballmer saw this iphone 5 keynote and how he felt about it.?
Excuse me? Cook and his pressed shirts jean wearing with dress shoes old farts do not impress anyone either.
This is the beginning of Apple’s descend back into the abyss and this time around MSFT will not save them as they did in 1998.
Tim won’t be around forever.
My sister is still using her 1st gen iPhone. It never died on her so she continued to use it up to now. She will upgrade to the iPhone 5.
The new standard, that set the standard in 2007 is boring present day?
I don’t think so.
Nothing to see here, move on to S3 or Nokia 920.
Yeah Samsung and Nokia are celebrating tonight watching Apple piss on their developers with a screen size that nobody wants and looks stupid.
That after just recently fuccing up in-app purchase security costing developers probably 100 million dollars in lost sales.
