Apple removes Google’s YouTube app from iOS 6

“On Monday, Apple released a new test version of its upcoming iOS 6 operating system, the software that powers iPads and iPhones, and developers quickly noticed that the app for YouTube had vanished,” Nick Wingfiled reports for The New York Times. “The change was noteworthy because the YouTube app has been included with iOS since Apple released the original iPhone in 2007.”

Wingfiled reports, “Apple released the following statement about YouTube’s fate: ‘Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.'”

Even better would be a default public video sharing app in iOS 6 for one of Google’s competitors. Vimeo, perhaps?

  1. The suggestion that Google wouldn’t want to license YouTube and have te YouTube app pre-installed on the iPhone just doesn’t make sense. You are forgetting that Google is an advertising company and that is where all their money comes from. This is clearly a deliberate attack from Apple and I agree with Apple’s move. Of course there will be a YouTube app in the App Store. Why should a Google service be pre-installed on iPhones and iPads? Apple doesn’t pre-install other popular apps for you. Google went from a partner to a competitor and now they must live with those consequences. Consumers can simply download the app if they choose from now on.

  2. Hahah ppl sticking up for apple as if they are gonna get paid for it. Google an apple make money from u lot. So dose it matter, the big exec play golf toghther and u lot fighting over it, I love you tube and if apple don’t want to include it fair play as long as I get an app from the app strore from google, job done I’m happy apples happy and googles happy what the hell u guys crying over

  3. I have just accessed You tube in Safari Browser Opted for add to home screen.A very Nice Icon appears on the iPad with a Youtube Motif. Access to Youtube easy and satisfactory

    1. This isn’t about solutions, it’s about whining and no one does it better than switchers, who are jaded by the PC platform’s swiss-army-knife approach to computing; give them everything they’re asking for, then let them sort it all out with 1-800-HELP.

They come into this camp not wanting to look too stupid, so they immediately start asking the tough questions like, Hey! Don’t you cromags even have a YouTube app around here? Frickin’ morons.

  4. I think this will end up being good for both Apple and Google (services from both companies I use daily). For YouTube fans, this will be great. The baked-in iOS YouTube app (created and maintained by Apple), will get much better now that it’s in Google’s hands. If users don’t like the app, they can still view it in mobile Safari. Google will finally get to serve ads via their iOS YouTube app, and Apple won’t have to maintain the YouTube iOS app. Win-win-win!
