Some MacBook Pro Retina displays hit by image persistence flaw; Apple replaces defective units (with video)

“Some early adopters of the new MacBook Pro with Retina display are experiencing image persistence issues with the laptop’s high-resolution screen, prompting Apple to replace any possibly defective units,” Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider.

“A number of users have reported on Apple’s Community Forums (via The Next Web) that their new MacBook Pro’s Retina display suffers from image retention issues, sometimes incorrectly referred to as ghosting, though the problem is not believed to be widespread,” Campbell reports. “Mis-titled as a screen ‘burn-in’ problem, the thread contains a number of identical instances of image persistence on the high pixel density IPS panels used in the recently-released MacBook Pro, though the true number of those affected could be greater as the problem may be too subtle for all but the most eagle-eyed users.”

Campbell reports, “Apple is apparently aware of the issue as Geniuses have ordered replacement units for the malfunctioning screens but in some cases owners have to wait two to three weeks due to high demand for the laptop.”

    1. Why would you live with it as opposed to having it repaired. Apple can be surprisingly gracious under such circumstances. Document your problem, bring it into the store, and I wouldn’t be shocked if they replace it. I’ve heard too many of those stories not to give it a shot.

    1. Your seem like a glass half-empty kind of person, JP…

If the replacement product looks new and is fully functional and covered by the same warranty, then what is the problem? Besides, sometimes you end up getting an upgrade from your current model or even a new unit.

      1. ‘Glass half empty’. I have owned Macs since 1985.

This is a first for me – two going bad. Maybe some of you are converts from MS and this is just the way it is for you.

        King me.

  1. Too funny! If this was a MSFT or Samsung issue, MDN would be hammering away like there is no tomorrow. I just get a kick from MDN’s comment on this one. Too funny!

  2. I bought a rMBP in July. It contains an LG-branded LCD panel (not the Samsung-branded LCD panel that is installed in other rMBP laptops) and the image retention/persistence is AWFUL, and it’s only gotten worse over the last couple of months. Apple is saying nothing about it publicly and doesn’t appear to be doing anything meaningful to fix the problem. We (myself and other disgruntled customers who are having this issue) are NOT happy about it. Why should it be a lottery whether you get a good rMBP (with Samsung display) or a crappy one (with LG display)? We’re all paying the same price.
