Easy fix for Mac OS X 10.7.3 ‘CUI’ and other issues

“Reports of problems after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7.3 have begun multiplying since its release on Wednesday afternoon,” Jacqui Cheng reports for Ars Technica. “The most prominent problem that some users are running into appears to involve a bizarre series of question mark images labeled “CUI” popping up on various screens and error boxes.”

“But don’t worry—you don’t have to wait for Apple to issue a fix, as reinstalling with the 10.7.3 Combo updater seems to take care of the various upgrade issues,” Cheng reports. “Installing the 10.7.3 Combo update—a 1.2GB download from Apple’s website—on top of your existing 10.7.3 installation reportedly remedies the problems introduced from Software Update.”

MacDailyNews Take: No issues here, but we didn’t upgrade any of our Macs via Software Update. Anyone here seeing issues with 10.7.3? If so, did you upgrade via Software Update?

    1. It would be interesting if MDN posed the question, “Once you start software update, do you run other programs?”

It would not surprise me that some users do this and “that” is the variable that screws up their update.

  1. I always use the Combo Update and I’ve had no issues whatsoever after updating to 10.7.3, nor have I ever had any after any other OS update that I can ever recall. Another good rule of thumb I always follow as well is to quit all open applications and eject any external drives before applying any OS update as well.

    1. You just made me remember crazy things users do.

Years ago I’m trying to help a Mac user get his calendar cleaned up in Now UpTo Date. Back then the PDA of choice was the Palm. Worked great for most users, except this guy. After much time sorting out dups and other crap I have him drop the Palm in the cradle and hit sync. I’m sitting back watching cause I know it will take awhile. He immediately launches the Now calendar on his Mac to add meetings.

I was like, hey, can’t do that, need to wait for the syncing to be done. No wonder his calendars were always screwed up.

I told all the users back then, Palm syncing to calendars was very touchy. Don’t mess with it while syncing.

Of course there was the other guy syncing his Palm to his work and home computers and wondering why it wasn’t working well. But that’s another story.

  2. Used software update on my early ’09 MacBook pro 17 unibody and got this error. More important than the artwork not being there and saying ‘CUI’ is that it immediately makes every app crash no matter what. Big let down but reinstalled from time machine. I will try the combo later today when I get time to see if it works.

  3. Did three systems: iMac 24″ (2009) and a Mac Mini (2006) via SWU without problems. The MacBook went into the CUI and App Crash hell. Booted to recovery partition and chose Re-install Lion. Fixed the problem and installed 10.7.3. So far no further issues with that system.

  4. I never use either Software Update or the regular client installer for Mac OS X updates. The COMBO update consistently avoids problems induced by the other two methods. It’s a trick i learned yonks ago from good old MacFixIt.com.

And yes kids, it’s just as important as ever to:
    1) Repair your boot volume before any OS update
    AND
    2) Repair your permissions BEFORE and AFTER every MOSX upgrade. (I’ve heard arguments against repairing permissions. i don’t care. I remain correct. So bite me).

  5. I remember working for an outfit ages ago that was developing a GUI for our telco customers to use when provisioning systems. It was a replacement for a command-line interface that some wag tried to coin as “CUI” or character user interface. That died a quick death as the terms were so similar in terms of how they were pronounced, how the letters looked, etc.
