Samsung hints next Galaxy Tabs may use pens, 3D gestures

“A conversation with Samsung product marketing manager Ryan Bidan late Tuesday has hinted that the next Galaxy Tab line may make interface a core selling point with a possible return to the early days of tablets. The division lead told Laptop that he expected the S Pen from the Galaxy Note to make its way to tablets. Slates and other devices would also get ‘3D gestures’ using the front camera, face recognition, and voice in certain circumstances,” Electronista reports. “‘I think a pen interface continues to make a lot of sense across a number of screen sizes, like the larger is more obvious of those,’ Bidan said. ‘That’s about as specific as I can be without announcing a product.'”

Electronista reports, “A shift towards pens would be a risky step for the Galaxy Tab. So far, tablets that have made pens their selling points have fared poorly, although not always due to the input method itself. Windows tablet PCs are the most commonly cited examples and saw eight years of their sales eclipsed by the iPad within nine months as Microsoft’s insistence on pen input first, along with high prices, failed to catch on with users.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, um, on second thought, maybe you should just stick to slavishly copying Apple, Samsung, and take your chances in court.

  1. Makes sense to me. SameDung knows it is infringing and is using the pen input as a work-around. Then SameSlang will be easily differentiated at a distance by users with pens. If they also implement verbal commands, we’ll also be able to recognize them when they curse their tablets. I wonder if the tablets will be programed to understand all the expletives? 🙂

  2. Pens would be awesome!
And a lanyard to fasten one’s pen to one’s Tablet!
Or a quiver to hold all the extra pens for back-up to the lost and forgotten pens.
And a separate keyboard, and a mouse, to distinguish Samsung’s Tablet selection from Apple’s, and to give the consumer the impression that they’re getting more for their buck!
Wow! These lightweight, portable Tablets are grea… uh, … hmmm. I think I’ll need a bigger backpack for my Samsung “Tablet”. Oh, and a desk.

  3. Pen: FAIL.

3D gestures via front camera only: FAIL.

I don’t think Samsung have a clue what they’re doing. This sounds like classic desperation behavior, grabbing for whatever they can find from legacy tech to GeeWizz vaporware tech.

Samsung, you are soooo screwed. You’ve really got it in for yourself, haven’t you? 😛

    1. that’s what I was thinking.. Haven’t they all tried tossing in a kitchen sink into all their devices. Yet simplicity in UI, function and design wins every time. Once all the bling (like fake front fender brake vents that are glued to the exterior of the car) wears off you actually use the device productively or its just a waste of money.

  4. I got it! SlumSang can reconfigure the delete key and make it eWhite. Charge for its use. Bottle of eWhite document corrector, all the mistakes you need to correct for one month $1.00. 🙂

Wait a minute. Above idea copyright marker12, 2012, all rights reserved. Why should I give SangSlung any idea they can use for free 🙂
