“Samsung Electronics, the world’s top maker of memory chips and smartphones, is set to report a robust quarterly profit rise on Friday, starting 2012 on an upbeat note aided by record-smashing sales of smartphones,” Miyoung Kim reports for Reuters.
“The South Korean firm, which surged past Apple as the world’s top smartphone maker in the third quarter, is quickly building on its supremacy with sleek designs and a rich product line-up, while the latest models from the likes of HTC, Nokia and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion struggle to interest consumers,” Kim reports. “Its handset division is now Samsung’s biggest earnings generator, raking in record profits.”
MacDailyNews Take: Whose sleek designs?
Kim reports, “The world’s biggest technology firm by revenue is likely to report 4.7 trillion won ($4.1 billion) in October-December operating profit on revenue of 46.2 trillion won, according to a consensus of 30 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. That would be its best profit since the third quarter of 2010, and up 57 percent from a year ago and 11 percent from the preceding quarter.”

puke!
I thought Apple was the biggest…
Who says Samdung is the smartphone leader? I thought they were like Amazon and don’t report a breakdown of actual sales! So the “smartphone” portion of their phone sales is only analysts’ estimates, not fact. Yet these reporters state it as though it’s true with no evidence. Criminal.
The article is from Reuters from a writer with the name Kim. There could be a bias in the report.
I find the selected adverbs and adjectives used to be quite revealing and interesting. “Robust”, “Supremacy”, “Raking”, “Record-setting”; bias indeed.
Samedung as someotherguy copy pastes its way to record profits. Disgusting.
Samsung has no future in smartphones.
Tell your friends about Samsung’s blatant copying and IP theft. Encourage them to BOYCOTT SAMSUNG.
“The world’s biggest technology firm by revenue is likely to report 4.7 trillion won ($4.1 billion) in October-December operating profit on revenue of 46.2 trillion won, ”
46.2T won is $40.3B USD, so this quarter Apple’s sales will crush Same-sung. Apple makes 2.5x the profit, so it’s not even close.
This doesn’t even consider the fact that a lot of what they are counting for Samsung isn’t even considered “tech”, as it includes refrigerators and washers and dryers, etc.
Hell, they make kitchen countertops. Seriously. Saw them at Home Depot.
I’m surprised any other businesses exist in South Korea.

They are smarter tha we give them credit for…. Without copying Apple they would be in the pits with the rest of Apple’s competitors. By copying they have to deal with the inevitable years of lawsuits, but during the interim they are selling gobs of phones etc… Ethically they are lacking … But they are making money…I don’t have to like it, but I do understand that they had no other choice…. They chose the lesser of 2 evils…Create their own products and fail…. Copy Apple’s and make money … That is capitalism … Make money whatever the cost… Defenders of capitalism cannot have it both ways.
(Although now that I think about it, this report is about “Samsung Electronics”, so maybe the Home Depot stuff is made by another company under the Samsung umbrella.)

Oh, come on guys… Do you actually expect objective, honest journalism abou South Korea’s Samsung from someone named Miyoung Kim?!??!?!!? His/her father probably is an executive for Samsung back home in Korea, for Chrissake!!! 🙂
Heh-heh!
Following this logic I guess we should carefully judge articles about Siemens when reported by Jurgen Schmidt or Nokia when reported by Liisa Jääskeläinen or Microsoft when reported by Will Gates.
So you see son, if you want to get ahead in life, don’t waste money on R&D and innovation….other companies will just steal it from you, quickly copy/manufacture the product and save oodles of money in the process. Doesn’t matter if the product is not perfectly copied resulting in it having numerous shortfalls. It doesn’t matter about pride of excellence in manufacturing, the user interface experience or any of that artsy crap called design. There is no place for that in modern business and those morons at Apple are soooo naive to think that way. This is what makes it so easy for us to steal their lunch money.
THIS is also why we can boast about record sales which inadvertently gives fuel to every Apple hater about why their iPhone sucks and ours is great. We can sell it cheaper and that is the only reason MOST people will buy it. They will overlook the flaws we introduced by poor copying and as long as it seems similar, they will even claim that it is better than the iPhone. This is to justify their own lack of intelligence and to hide their cheap asses but in the end, and with constant repetition, they have probably convinced themselves that their superiority is true.
Life is good.
The people that buy an Android phone are of the same ilk that suffer with Windows. I wouldn’t want one. The iphone is just so much nicer.
I decided to boycott Samsung several months ago, but when I did an inventory of all the electronic devices in our home and my office, I discovered I already was boycotting them!
My congratulations to Samsung on the strong Q4 performance. I will be mailing them my favorite Radiohead’s album as a celebration:

I’ll bet that a lot of their revenue comes from producing Apple’s memory. So if Apple does well, …
Samsung make anykind of stuff. When they see something they will copy it. That’s all about Samsung, thier product designs and ideas was from someone else.
The only Shamesung product I would buy in the future is a toilet. I’m sure they will be making one of them soon. After all, they are pros when it comes to CRAP!
@m159 did you just check the brand names or all the components such as procssors, memory and screens. Chances are that your apple innovations contain a lot of samsung innovation within. Android it s tiny part of samsungs enterprises.
It just goes to show you that there will always be a market for ‘Crapware’ regardless of what form it takes and ‘Samdung’ is only too happy to exploit this fact at every opportunity.
