Apple to unveil two next-gen A6-powered iPad models in January, sources say

“Apple is set to unveil its next-generation iPad – which will come in two versions – at the iWorld [Macworld | iWorld] scheduled for January 26, 2012, according to sources at its supply chain partners,” Yenting Chen, Ingrid Lee, and Jessie Shen report for DigiTimes.

“The new models will join the existing iPad 2 to demonstrate Apple’s complete iPad series targeting the entry-level, mid-range and high-end market segments, the sources claimed,” Chen, Lee, and Shen report. “Instead of the previously-rumored 7.85-inch, the upcoming iPad models will still feature 9.7-inch screens but come with QXGA resolution (1,536×2,048 pixels), the sources indicated.”

“Apple continues to contract Samsung to manufacture its quad-core A6 processors, which will be used in the next-generation iPads, the sources revealed. The existing iPad 2 is based on the dual-core A5,” Chen, Lee, and Shen report. “Samsung is also among the CMOS image sensor (CIS) suppliers for one of the versions of the new iPad that comes with a 5-megapixel lens, marking the Korea-based vendor’s first time to grab CIS orders from Apple, the sources noted. Sony is the other CIS supplier for the other model with a higher 8-megapixel lens, the sources added.”

Any original releases don’t count as people didn’t have one to start with.

    1. Oh I see.. so you buy a product and expect progress to halt to a standstill until YOU are ready to buy another one. That self-centered attitude cracks me up lol. The world doesn’t evolve around you, and Apple isn’t going to wait for it’s competitors to catch up just to satisfy your need to have the most current tech. If it truly upsets you so much, you can buy the new one, too. No one will stop ya.

  1. This is all common sense stuff – faster processor, more dpi and model spread and better camera…in-built mic?
The battery increase tho’ is …ermm… probably not possible without a breakthrough technology we haven’t heard about or volume and weight increase and I can’t see Apple accepting these compromises given the ‘thinner, faster’ marketing. I saw a broken iPad with a detached screen brought into the Apple Store and it’s already nearly all battery in the enclosure – so where do we get the doubling+ in capacity from?

  2. These “sources” are idiots and the people propagating this bullshit are shit dumb ignorant fuckholes. Anyone, especially after all this time, who still insists on speculation based on the idea that Apple works like other companies is simply to fucking stupid to be a blogger, never mind an analyst or a journalist. It’s mind boggling how fucking stupid these people are, and worse, the shit head investors and stock manipulators who continue to spread this mindless garbage.

No, I don’t find this stuff annoying Why do you ask?

      1. Too late to not start it. Scatologically speaking, the turd had already been laid on the table. But we can aspire to better posts in the new year. So good sentiment, and Felicitations of the Season to you, Spark!

  3. This rumor is a load of BS. Apple is not going to release a produce at an event they no longer attend. As well they are not going to fragment the user experience by have two different IPads. Apple is smart and will do what they have been doing with IPads by only separating the IPads with difference GB capacity not functions. I hate rumor cause most of the time they are wrong and make no sence. The Apple brand is high end and the goal of the iPad is to have a halo effect on it other products. Apple is not going to make different versions to appeal to a different market. With Apple you can afford the product or you can’t.

    1. Exactly. How would they unveil an iPad 3 at an event they won’t attend?

Everyone will know when Apple is going to announce an iPad 3 when they send out the invitations. Until then, this is all BS (and likely more attempts at stock manipulation).

      1. On the other hand, he could be writing directly to his audience. Rephrasing: It’s scary to contemplate how ignorant so many really are.

With so many people connected and posting on teh interwebs, those sitting on the tails of the ‘bell curve’ really stand out.

  4. Maybe this helps account for the news story a month ago that Apple was reducing orders for certain iPad components.

At the time it was taken as a sign that iPad 2 sales were weaker than expected. In retrospect, perhaps iPad 2 production was being cut to help clear out inventories prior to the impending introduction of iPad 3.
