Flurry Analytics says that “6.8 million iOS and Android devices got activated around the world on Christmas Day,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “According to Google’s Andy Rubin… 3.7 million Android devices were activated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day… 700,000 Android devices were activated on Christmas Eve, [so] the number activated on Christmas Day could not exceed 3 million.”
P.E.D. reports, “If we can trust Flurry’s and Rubin’s numbers, that suggests at least 3.8 million iOS devices were activated on Dec. 25… But this is just guesswork. We’ll get hard numbers in January when Apple reports its earnings for its first fiscal quarter of 2012, which ends Saturday.”

MacDailyNews Take: When an art lover, for example, asks for a Christmas present, they ask for original work from accomplished artists, not for bad copies, two for one, out of Korea.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “JES42” for the heads up.]
3.8 mil 3.7 mil = 6.8 mil?
3.8 mil – 3.7 mil = 1 mil?
Have you guys fallen off the wagon or…?
You are counting Christmas Eve for Android and not for iOS. Take Christmas Eve out of the equation.
Christmas day = 6.8 million total
iOS = 3.8 million
iOS knockoff = 3.0 million
Eric Schmidt will be along any second to correct this.
given the hype of KindleFire, I really want to know how those are counted. Rubin’s definition changed constantly – first it’s those accessing google services (if i simply open the browser to google.com without performing a search, does that count?), then its those with a cell phone contract (which goes against the huge prepaid population in emerging markets), then he said doesn’t include reactivations (if a device was activated once then returned and never sold again, does it still count??)
curious how he only likes to tweet these “activation numbers” (without full definition) but none of the OEMs want to report actual SALES (not shipped)
The only reason, I believe, that The Fire is selling so well is that the consumer is not aware that they are buying into the Android world. There are 2,186 words used on The Fire’s Amazon page (if my memory is correct, but it’s 2000+) and the word “Android” is only used two (2) times! and the usage is 1/2 page and below. There will be many returns.
Rubin is a f***ed up bastard who as Google’s chief propagandist hasn’t told the truth in years. The only thing Android has activated is a vibrator up his ass.
+1000 hehe
Poor, poor little fandroids. Android’s dominance in pure market share is the only argument they have. When that’s gone, what’s left?

“The only thing Android has activated is a vibrator up his ass.”
That one had me in stitches.
So, this year the nice people out numbered the naughty ones.
Any Android device is the modern equivalent of coal.
Does this include all the wifi-only iPod Touches and iPads that don’t require wireless activation? If not, the number for iOS will be even higher.
