Mac OS X 10.7.3 beta drivers reveal evidence of new Mac Pros

“People with access to the OS X 10.7.3 bits seeded by Apple over the weekend have confirmed the presence of several drivers that bear references to an upcoming AMD graphics card,” Scoople reports.

“The drivers are for desktop solutions, meaning the graphics card in question should be deployed in a new batch of Mac Pros – Apple’s only Macintosh computer to use desktop-grade solutions (physical cards) for graphics,” Scoople reports.

    1. How does it make sense to be waiting for a new Mac Pro (because you presumably need all that extra power without portability), and then get a MacBook Pro instead? 🙂

With an iMac, you’d have a faster quad core processor and up to 16GB of RAM (instead of only 8GB max with a MacBook Pro), plus TWO internal drives (one of them SSD). Well, even with the current “old” Mac Pro, you could have up to 12 cores and 64GB of RAM, with FOUR internal drives.

But if you’re fine with the “limitations” of a MacBook Pro (in exchange for the portability), I think THAT was the correct choice in the first place.

      1. I guess you missed ANTIGLARE !
I will have to wait for Thunderbolt to be mainstream in order to add the features I will need down the road.
Also MacBook Pros will accept 16GM of RAM not 8. It will also accept 2 internal SSD drives which I will be installing in the new year, for now I will be using a platter and SSD.

        1. The current MacBook Pro has TWO RAM slots which support 4GB each, for a maximum of 8GB, according to the specs.

The current iMac has FOUR RAM slots.

I didn’t realize you could put TWO SSD’s in a MacBook Pro. It’s not a configuration option (at the online Apple Store) when you purchase it to have two storage drives in it. I suppose you could use OWC’s kit to replace the optical drive with a 2.5-inch drive (disassembly required).

I did see the “ANTIGLARE !” comment but that did not make any sense and the sole reason for your decision. With a Mac Pro, you can get any display (of any size) you want. You are really trading the better Mac Pro (or iMac) performance and capacity for the more limited (but portable) MacBook Pro, just for a relatively small 17-inch display that is not shiny?

For the cost of a 17-inch MacBook Pro, you could have had a 21.5-inch iMac plus ANY display you want to connect as an external secondary display. Then, you would have a two-screen system and you can use the large external display as your primary display, with the iMac’s display off two the side in a support role. That’s actually how I have my iMac set up, although it’s an older model. The external display (of my choice) is the primary screen, and the iMac’s display is the secondary screen.

  1. This *may* just be a graphics card availability update — unlikely, but possible.

Tahiti is supposed to be announced/start shipping during CES 2012 (Jan 10-13) while the Mac Pros are really waiting on the 6 core SandyBridge based Xeons shipping in quantity which likely won’t happen until well after that.

    1. I agree. In and of itself, adding new graphics card drivers is not evidence of new Mac Pros. Unless it can be shown that the drivers are for a graphics card that has some physical or electrical requirement not available on current Mac Pros (e.g., a new PCI architecture).
