“After what can only be described as a poor start for Google’s much-anticipated Gmail app for Apple’s iOS platform, the software has returned,” Josh Lowensohn reports for CNET.
“The app, which was released earlier this month and then yanked almost immediately, had a bug that Google said broke notifications,” Lowensohn reports. “It also served up an error message the first time users fired it up.”
Lowensohn reports, “The app is noteworthy in that Google has avoided offering a Gmail client for iOS since the introduction of the App Store. Users of the iPhone, iPod and iPad can, of course, use Apple’s own email client to access their email; however, that built-in client is missing many Gmail-specific features.”

Thanks for the advice. However, “gmail” was exactly what I searched for, among other things, and got nothing. I even double-checked with iTunes on a Mac and with the App Store app on an iPad before writing the comment. The story was either premature, or the app was temporarily withdrawn–or maybe it was a little like when the same writer a day or so earlier announced the availability of Tunes 10.5.1 with ITunes Match, only to soon discover it was withdrawn, then only variously available.

After my experience with Google crapmaps, I can’t see even using another piece of software from Our Lady of Perpetual Beta. That software has been around for ages, and still it:
– changed my different, distinctive markers into generic blue blobs
– dropped a bunch of them into oblivion
– moved some data onto a second “page” on the map — so that it was not visible on my actual map.
– held most of my order of markers – but not all of them.
– THREE attempts to reorder alphabetically never quite stuck. 95% is not good enough — especially when five “A”s get left at the bottom of a column of 140 points.
– And no apparent points in Help addressing any of my specific problems.
