Shipped vs. sold and third-party estimates vs. actual unit sales

“The Internet is buzzing this morning with news that Samsung has overtaken Apple as the worlds leading smartphone vendor,” Jim Dalrymple reports for The Loop. “The problem is, there are no numbers to actually back up the claim.”

“Samsung doesn’t provide specific numbers, so we are going to take their word that shipments jumped 40 percent?” Dalrymple asks. “To make matters worse, Strategy Analytics ‘estimates’ sales of 28 million devices. Where the hell did they get that number?”

“According to Strategy Analytics, Apple sold 17 million iPhones, which is equal to a 21 percent growth rate over the same quarter last year. Those numbers are publicly available in Apple’s own earnings press release,” Dalrymple reports. “Note the big difference? Apple ‘sold’ 17 million iPhones and Samsung ‘shipped’ some number that Strategy Analytics pulled out of their ass.”

  1. Ok if I steal a car and sell it, get caught the next day i would be in jail in no time. But if I steal IP and sell it, make billons I get praise from the media? Something is fuked up here.

  2. I for one, Never Bought that Assertion that they Sold almost twice what “APPLE” did.
I had a Feeling that they were Playing the Old Microsuck Crappy Game, Clogging up the Lane with is “SHIPPED” Devices, and then the Media allow them to get away with it.
17 Million Plus Sold, not Shipped.
The iPhone 4 was the most Sought after Mobile Device, and now the iPhone 4S is.
And if these Androids was Doing Sooo Great, why the Hell is “T-Mobile” Throwing a “Temper Tantrum” because they cannot Sell the iPhone and why the Hell is “SPRINT” Having their Best Sales ever in History with the iPhone 4/iPhone 4S of all Devices on their Network when have Access to the best Android Devices.

    (Shameful)

  3. Samsung had about 20 million smartphones shipped last quarter and then said it was the last times are giving such data.

Now there is no data but all of sudden Samsung’s sales are estimated to grow almost 40% from quarter to quarter?

  4. as unPC, which I hope I am, as this sounds: the oriental mind is incapable of invention and creativity as opposed to the occidental mind, but they sure are hell-on-wheels when it comes to copying.

      1. the reality is this: civilization, as we know it, is the fruit of the labor of the caucasian male of European descent: Aristotle, Leonardo, Beethoven, Newton, Jefferson, Roebling, Edison, Ford, Pascal, Babbage, Fermi…in related news, men are stronger than women, owls have better visual acuity than people, film at 11.

        1. I was starting to think that our failing education system in the US was a problem that just started showing itself. Apparently it has always sucked because you need a history lesson.

    1. Gun powder, paper making using pulp, toothbrush, fishing reel, kite and numerous metal working techniques involving iron and steel all originated in the ‘oriental mind’. That is just the stuff I can think of I’m sure the list is way longer than that.

I have no idea what to even think reading your post beyond wondering why and when this forum started becoming the racist and politically explosive cesspool it seems to be lately.

Sure white guys did a lot of useful things and invented, but so did a lot of people who did not have white skin. The human race as a whole has invented a lot over the years.

You aren’t unPC, hell I can respect unPC people, you are just… man i don’t even want to say it… (trying to refrain from name calling and all).

For the record I’m a white guy too and no, I don’t work for samsung or any company based in Asia.

  5. The competition almost always uses the “shipped” number (maybe because they have no clue how many were actually sold). Apple seems to be the only one who reports how many were actually “sold” to users. And it does not matter too much for Apple; “shipped” usually equals “sold” in a matter of days (most Apple products do not sit in someone’s inventory for weeks).

Another impressive point for Apple is that the 3rd quarter numbers do NOT include a new iPhone model. A lot of customers were waiting for iPhone 4S, which should give this quarter’s numbers an BIG bump.

  6. Oh come on people. This just isn’t news. Apple fans are always first to point out that Apple sells quality not quantity. So why are people getting their shorts tied in knots because some other company outsold Apple in smartphones for the quarter?

    1. Rick, why do you say that “some other company outsold Apple in smartphones for the quarter” ?

Where did you see that another company outsold Apple in hardware?

      Numbers, and source, please.

Or, are you simply another Theft-of-Apple-IP apologist?

      Hmmm?

    1. Yes, actually I do remember those long lines for the Galaxy phone, it was also featured on this blog if I remember. Long lines of people, 1 week before the iPhone release. All sorts of people lined up to by the new android phone- not the iPhone. Granted, they were buying the android for $2.00 and then selling it to 3rd world counties for a profit so they could use the money to buy an iPhone, but those are only details.

  7. The parroting of this bogus story by the mainstream media whores is sickening – it was one big headline after another from the biggest media names (WJS, Reuters, Bloomberg, NYT, etc.) that blanketed the news all day today, and yet none had bothered to check the sources of the original piece for validity.

Thanks to Dalrymple for getting to the bottom of it.

  8. What I don’t understand is that Samsung did say that their y/y smart-phone shipments went up 300%. That’s pretty amazing no matter how you look at it.

    BUT……

Samsung also says that their y/y smart-phone revenue only went up 39%. So they really haven’t sold anywhere near the 300% and/or they are making razor-thin margins on what they have sold.

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/science-and-technology/2011/10/28/samsung-profits-dip-almost-a-quarter-despite-boost-in-sales-of-their-smartphones-86908-23520938/

BTW, for Samsung’s entire operation, profits FELL 23%. That should really be happening to a company on the “cutting edge” of phones, TVs, memory chips, CPUs, etc.

    1. Back in the days of the iPod killers, Creative was reporting suspiciously high shipped numbers. I found in their quarterly reports a disconnect between units and revenue/earnings, as you now find with Samsung. Stock analysts at the time missed it, and it later turned out Creative was trying to fabricate a bandwagon effect.

Also consider these unaudited Samsung claims in light of their legal argument: there are so many Galaxy users, an injunction against those phones would create unacceptably widespread hardship.

  9. It’s Friday which means today was the weekly Options Expiration. “Bad News” is used to manage stock price. It’s blatant manipulation but the SEC never seems to “notice” it. They’re too busy pursuing high school kids in New Jersey for blogging about stocks…

  10. Yes, and can any discussion of bullshit sales number be complete without bringing up ol Jeffy B? The same guy who is now trumpeting how advance orders on the Kindle Fie are going to destroy the iPad2??

How would we ever know? Amazon has been plugging the Kindle as this insane sales triumph, but since they won’t ever release actual numbers, who the hell knows?

And it’ll be the same three-card monty shell game with the Fire. Basically, they can say anything they want, re “numbers shipped”, “numbers pre-ordered”, “greatest device ever” etc etc. If you won’t release real numbers in the earnings reports its ALL bullshit. How come they NEVER get called on this? Imagine if Apple tried crap like this? ,

  11. Samsung is a desperate company looking for any angle to slow down the Apple juggernaut. Soon – probably by the end of the next fiscal year – Apple will overtake Samsung Electronics as the largest technology company in the world in revenues.

Eventually, just as Apple has already done with the likes of Microsoft, Apple will dwarf Samsung in revenues. Apple’s net earnings are already 3 times as much as Samsung’s and that gap will grow wider. And Apple continues apply the legal pressure on all things Android. Samsung is scared of the inevitable: they’ll always be Apple’s lackey…

Deal with it, Samsung – and just provide the good components for Apple. That’s what you were meant to do – unless you can come up with something original and unique for the first time in your dubious history.
