Apple has released iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.
The update is available when your iOS device is plugged in through iTunes and users check for a new version.
This will be the last iOS version that Apple releases that will not be PC-free and able to arrive through the device itself.
Downloading now! It won’t be long!
It’s a big f*#ker!
Hey you try to update now ?
SOLUTION TO IOS 5 UPDATE FAILURE I FOUND IN THE FORUMS: (The update worked for me after following these instructions.)
“Here’s how I fixed this on my MacBook Pro.
With your device connected, in iTunes, Option-click the Restore button.
You’ll be asked to select the file to use to Restore. Go To Folder (Command-Shift-G): ~/Library/iTunes/
then into the proper “XYZ Software Updates” folder (“iPad Software Updates” for example), you’ll find the file to use to update.
If you have more than one, select the one that ends with “5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw”.
This resolved the “internal error occurred” I had with my iPad 2.
Make sure you read the warnings that pop up during the process; this will remove everything you have on your device, so you’ll need a working backup, or a way to sync your data.
Good luck.”
not up on mine yet
Yay! And boo! I can’t get it for another 4 hours when I get off work. Can’t wait!
Ditto. š
Same..
Logged in via teamviewer and getting 10.7.2 at least..
Anyone running into downloading issues. I was in the middle of downloading 10.7.2, and then it stopped. š
Me too. Keep hitting it, mine would download a little more each time. It kept what it had previously downloaded, 100 mb, etc. Then added to it. Took 4 times.
downloading 10.7.2 for my mac now as well!!
Ouch! 100Kbs, about 1/12 of my bandwidth. 84 minutes to go! Apple needs a bigger farm.
They should take a page out of Blizzard’s book and make their updates a hybrid of p2p and direct download. That way more people trying to download something actually makes it go faster, not slower.
1st! not to comment but I’ve gotta be first in downloading it, about 1pm I plugged my phone in and said check for update and it said there wasn’t any and I pressed it 2 more times and it said update available but when I pushed to download it just wouldn’t let me do it so I kept pressing it until it let me download. 774.4MB 2 mins to go.
Slooooooow download. After 10 minutes it says I have 40 min left.
Crap. It was there and asked if I wanted to download and update, but I decided to do a backup first. After the backup it says my software is up to date and that 4.3.5 is the latest version. Where’d the update go?
I updated iTunes to 10.5 early this morning, so I know that’s not the culprit.
WHO STOLE MY iOS 5?
That happened to me too. I decided to download 10.7.2 first. I’ve got a few minutes left…
Hey … there it is!
Thank god i have a 50mb broadband connection, with the Lion update coming in at 888mb, IOS 5 update at circa 770mb & having to download IOS 5 to 2 iPhones & 1 IPad.
Though, its now saying download time for iOS 5 on my iPad at 2hours 45 minutes.
Thats what you get when millions want to get their hands on the created mobile operating system there is š
Sorry should have said GREATEST mobile operating system there is š
Servers are getting a serious workout today. Still going 3 hours for 10.7.2 and I have 12mb download speed. Plus it already failed once and had to start it again.
FYI, 12 Mbps is VERY different from 12 MB per second download speed. My guess is that you have the former.
Last week was one of the worst weeks ever in Tech. This week is turning into the BEST with new updates to iTunes, Lion, OS 5, the cloud and the new iPhone4S. What a difference a week makes. Did I mention that Apples Stock is up too?
Big update! Chugging along. And I get my new 4S on Friday. Schwing!
Just DL’d 250mb of the 774 for iOS 5 and it timed out!!!! Ugh!!!
Even after the slow train of downloading it, it’s going to take at least 45 mins to an hour to complete it’s install and restore. It’s been restoring my apps for about 30 mins now and I don’t have that many on there.

why won’t the multitouch gestures work for me?????
Simply.. Only iPad2 will get that feature. Stupid!
Thank you for not supporting something like USB3, Apple. This whole update process would have been much less aggravating with something like that.
They really have to start seeing the light on this kind of stuff. <10mins to download and install. Working on more than an hour to restore. Eye-candy isn't everything.
It’s called thunderbolt, and it spanks usb3.
Just go read the reviews.
And besides this is the last time you have to use the cable to sync.
1 š
Since when does any iOS device support Thunderbolt?
since when did he ask about his iPhone supporting USB3.
he said APPLE… he wanted a USB3 port on his mac.
I just mentioned that Apple went with thunderbolt because it beats USB3.
Apple’s servers are getting pounded harder than a $20 whore.
Donwloaded the first 700mb very fast, another 10 minutes for the rest.
I needed to unplug to proceed with the backup.
Entered my Provider Code twice during the update.
I liked the setup of the iphone while at the same time it backed up my apps… (still busy, i got more than 200 apps )
niche and without hassle. but then it asked me for the apple id and by default my mobile me id was already set.
so i confirmed, knowing that i am registered also with another apple id. which i also used to buy my mbp.
enough said, here is the question:
hassle or not ?
Hi guys how long it’s take to update i try it’s take 8hrs
I got it in 16 minutes
MacBook – 10.6.8 – iPhone 4 – iOS 5 download and install process about 35 minutes. I will get 10.7.2 installed on the Macbook tonight maybe.
Download worked great for me. Unfortunately, trying to update both my iPhone and iPad led to backup or restore errors, with it warning me that I would wipe my iPad clean if I continued.
So, no upgrade for me. Hopefully, the iPhone is actually backed up for when my new 4S comes Friday. But I’d like to get my iPad upgraded too, so I can use iCloud.
I could never do this at home with our 0.5MB DSL connection. I downloaded the 812MB package (iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw) at work and put it in my Dropbox. Before I go to bed, I should have it at home to drop into the right place and start the update process. It might be done by the time I get up in the morning!
“I could never do this at home with our 0.5MB DSL connection. I downloaded the 812MB package (iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw) at work and put it in my Dropbox.”
How do you think it gets from Dropbox to your Mac at home?
Duh… What I meant was if I had gone home then started the download it wouldn’t finish mainly because the servers cut me off for being too slow. In a few weeks it would let me stay connected for the many many hours it’ll take. However, Dropbox reliably lets the download proceed no matter how slow my connection. Plus, I can get it started this afternoon, long before I get home, and have a chance that it might actually be done before midnight.
i am keep on getting this message “”The iPhone “iPhone 4″ could not be restored. An internal error occurred.” i tried everything, restarting, etc. could someone help me? thank you very much!
After my earlier post above on what sounds like the same or a similar issue to yours, I checked the Apple support forums, and there are a ton of reports of the same issue.
The only possible solution so far was one person reported that he disabled a firewall, and it worked. But since this error is cropping up after the download has been completed, I’m not sure what that would have to do with anything, unless it’s preventing something from being properly verified, or something.
At any rate, this was happening to me while at work, and I’ll try it again at home tonight to see if it works any better.
I’d also advise anyone who sees this error to just tell it to stop the process and keep your phone as-is. Some folks have tried to push through, giving iTunes permission to wipe the phone. They’ve ended up with a blank phone and can’t get their pics, videos, etc. back. It’s unclear what happened to the actual backed up data for them, but still, why risk it?
it could be the “phone home” from the iPhone to contact apple’s servers to verify the install.
thats my guess anyway, since I bet iOS5 contacts a new server now for updates the firewalls etc don’t know it yet.
after several trials, my iPhone became a “brick.” black screen and failed to update. i had to download iOS 4.3.5 and it’s restoring now. strange that my iPhone just refuse to be updated to iOS 5.
I reinstalled iTune 10.5, and it got me out of the “internal error” mode it was in. I didn’t even trash my prefs. But it restored my iPhone after I reinstalled.
I’ve had the same problem with my iPad and my daughter’s iPod touch. Apple support doc says to update everything (done), disconnect other USB devices (done), restart computer (done), connect iDevice to iTunes …
After three tries – restarting Mac each time, my iPad finally updated. Still no joy on the kid’s iPod.
I still have another iPad and another MacBook to update tonight … feels like it’s going to be a long night!
I have an internal error code 3200 what is it?
I had that problem as well. After 3 tries, I realized that I might not have enough free space so I choose to not sync all my music temporarily. That freed up tons of space and the update worked without any further problems.
You are not alone. Same here.
I love the hype… I love the excitement it.
I love it…
What the? iOS 5 looks exactly like iOS 4.3.5. I don’t know, it looks like nothing’s changed, except they added Videos, Reminders and Newsstand. Browsing’s slightly faster on mobile Safari. And text seems to look crisper on my iPhone 4 screen. Apart from that I didn’t get Siri, but that was to be expected.
Two iPads and two iPods – and each time it downloads the update again!
When will iTunes finally get some intelligence????
Agreed. It’s ridiculous that iTunes doesn’t retain the download. But, won’t this all be irrelevant with over the air updates?
I always choose “Download only” option. Then it uses the same download for all devices. (Three different varieties though).
Twice now on a 3GS and a Mac Pro, after backing up my 3GS it says an internal error occurred. And once on another 3GS and an iMac, same thing. Trying yet again. This isn’t good.
I had the same problem and turning off the firewall was the solution for me.
Error 3013
Ouch. iOS keeps giving me unable to reach server after extracting.
Crashed, now in restore and update mode.
This is what I see in the “iPhone Updater Logs” via the Console app. Looks to me like it’s a server error.
2011-10-12 16:05:13.000 iTunes[347:2b2f]: amai: tss_submit_job: error from server=100 (An internal error occurred.)

I don’t have the firewall turned on and I have no external firewall either, just an Apple Airport Extreme.
I downloaded iOS 5 and got an internal error too!
Now iTunes says, “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes”
THANKS APPLE – YOU FUCKED ME OVER!!!!!!!
No, you’re not Fed!
You just need to be patient. It appears to be a server issue on Apple’s side. Once they resolve the problem, you can restore from a previous backup and all will be fine.
We understand that. But it’s very frustrating.
I’m currently trying to attempt to get iOS5 on my iPad for the 3rd time. Firewall’s been off.
The frustrating part is that iTunes goes through a whole time-consuming shebang before it tries to contact the server. Specifically. It backs up my iPad every time, which takes about a half hour at least. It shouldn’t have to do that. The contents on my iPad haven’t changed since the latest sync this morning in preparation for iOS5.
Guess I’m still on the luck side, as each attempt leaves the iPad in a usable state. Nevertheless, frustrating. Certainly not the way Apple should be doing things.
“The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3004).”
GREAT! THANKS APPLE! STEVE WOULD FIRE YOUR ASSES!!!!!!!
Snap.
Error 3004. Why oh why did I not wait?
You would think a restore process would let you roll back to a working version. Not here! This is very un Apple.
REstore finally working on mine after nearly 2 hours. Just waing for video, music and photos now.
Will I have 4.3 or 5.0 when it is finished?
I’ll be just grateful to have a working phone back š
yep, apple screwed the pooch on this one.
Repeated internal failure errors on 2 separate computers, 2 different iOS devices.
Millions of people having a crappy experience trying to update.
Makes me really look forward to this level of service on icloud.
A broken phone is not an inconvenience, it’s inexcusable.
Mine was “bricked” in recovery mode 10 minutes into the install, and an hour later, I STILL can’t restore it
lol my iPad 2 is just stuck with Apple logo then restore mode before it crashes. Starts all over again. I guess I better disconnect and reboot. Start it again.
What a crappy experience.
First, I updated Lion – went well.
Then, I updated iTunes – went well (or so it seems).
Then I put on my iPad 2 to update – and all hell has broken loose. Right near the end of what appeared to be the update, I’m told it cannot happen because error 3004 occurred. Tried again, a few times, same thing. Somewhere along the line, I think I even lost my backup.
Right now, my iPad 2 is a brick on an Infinite Loop. I cannot turn it off; when I connect it to the Mac, the Apple logo shows up, the update/restore bar shows up, and then it goes back into the spinning gears thing . . . . and again and again and again . . . .
This is a major f**up. Instead of a new and shiny OS, my iPad has become useless. I’ve probably lost everything I had on it.
You go to the Apple site, and you probably have to spend a week just trying to get to the right place for the right answer.
Totally disappointed and p*d off.
Oh man. iPhone 4 made it after a few hiccups. My iPad 2 is stuck with the Apple logo then pinwheel then restore mode, then crashes. Back to Apple logo and all over again. I can’t even shut it off. I think it’s screwed. Hmmmm…
Same here. Reinstalled iTunes. Numerous restarts. Still stuck between Apple logo, pinwheel and restore status bar.
FUBAR.
Do a hard restore then. Unplug the USB on the iPad. Hold the home and power button down so that it shuts off. While pressing down the home button, plug the pin connector and keep holding down the home button til you see the connect to iTunes cable picture on the iPad. Then you can restore again.
Took about three attempts for me before it finally took. So iPad is now on its way to recovery.
Thanks for that “hard restore” tip. I was not able to restore, but at least, this time the message was that no connection could temporarily be made to the software update server. That’s better than some gobbledygook error message. Hopefully, it’s a light at the end of this tunnel.
Download update to my iPhone 4 failed. There was some kind of internal error that wouldn’t allow data to be restored to the phone. I tried A, B, C: all failed.
Tomorrow is another day.
steve h.
phat phingers.
Ballsed up on iPhone 4 twice now, gonna give it one more try and if it doesn’t work, I’ll sack it off til tomorrow.
Not even bothered trying with iPad.
Not impressed, sloppiness, seems to be creeping into Apple over the last year or so in my opinion, the like of which I’ve never experienced in my 15 years as a user.
C’mon people. Lets give them a little slack. Count up all the iOS users that can upgrade to iOS 5 and all the Mac and Windows POS machines that needs updating. All trying to get gigs of data at the same time… I’m surprised that Apple servers didn’t have a total meltdown. Just authentication/verification errors that messes with the update was the hiccup. None of these hiccups will brick your iOS device. Just try again.
I think you are right about what’s happening. But it is still inexcusable for Apple to not be prepared for this. They sell hundreds of millions of devices, and all those millions have been hungrily geared up for this update for months. How can they not be prepared for this overload? They could have staggered the updates in some way or other. Oh well …. hopefully they’ll learn from this.
Awesome! Only took me 6 hours to update lion and now iPhone crashed on update and haven’t been able to restore last 2 hours error 3004! Way to go Apple on your update servers! And we make fun of Microsoft and android why lol?
Same iPhone crash here. Unplugged the USB and turned the phone off. On restart it said I needed to restore which it did. I just let it to it’s thing and I got everything back in about a half hour. Scary but it turned out OK.
Clicking on more information at the crash site got me this website… http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
I have never has a problem doing something like this. They must have really buggered this one up. Think I’ll leave the iPad and rest of my Apple devices alone until they sort this out.
Bad Apple… bad
F…I…N…A…L…L…Y…!!
My iPad 2 is getting restored and updated! Right now, it’s restoring the apps. I’ll only know what, if anything, I lost after the whole process is done. I’m mainly concerned about the data I had before this experience. Hopefully it is still intact.
Anybody else get “SMS Full” error messages? I can’t receive texts.
Error 5000, no matter what time of day or night.
This is the super cool os ever right now available.Hope soon there will be more variation in future. Thanks admin for sharing this great info.I love it when phone’s talking.:)
