Apple releases iOS 5

Apple has released iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices.

The update is available when your iOS device is plugged in through iTunes and users check for a new version.

This will be the last iOS version that Apple releases that will not be PC-free and able to arrive through the device itself.

    1. SOLUTION TO IOS 5 UPDATE FAILURE I FOUND IN THE FORUMS: (The update worked for me after following these instructions.)

“Here’s how I fixed this on my MacBook Pro.

With your device connected, in iTunes, Option-click the Restore button.
You’ll be asked to select the file to use to Restore. Go To Folder (Command-Shift-G): ~/Library/iTunes/
then into the proper “XYZ Software Updates” folder (“iPad Software Updates” for example), you’ll find the file to use to update.
If you have more than one, select the one that ends with “5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw”.

This resolved the “internal error occurred” I had with my iPad 2.

Make sure you read the warnings that pop up during the process; this will remove everything you have on your device, so you’ll need a working backup, or a way to sync your data.

      Good luck.”

    1. They should take a page out of Blizzard’s book and make their updates a hybrid of p2p and direct download. That way more people trying to download something actually makes it go faster, not slower.

  1. 1st! not to comment but I’ve gotta be first in downloading it, about 1pm I plugged my phone in and said check for update and it said there wasn’t any and I pressed it 2 more times and it said update available but when I pushed to download it just wouldn’t let me do it so I kept pressing it until it let me download. 774.4MB 2 mins to go.

  2. Crap. It was there and asked if I wanted to download and update, but I decided to do a backup first. After the backup it says my software is up to date and that 4.3.5 is the latest version. Where’d the update go?

I updated iTunes to 10.5 early this morning, so I know that’s not the culprit.

    WHO STOLE MY iOS 5?

  3. Thank god i have a 50mb broadband connection, with the Lion update coming in at 888mb, IOS 5 update at circa 770mb & having to download IOS 5 to 2 iPhones & 1 IPad.

Though, its now saying download time for iOS 5 on my iPad at 2hours 45 minutes.

Thats what you get when millions want to get their hands on the created mobile operating system there is 🙂

  4. Last week was one of the worst weeks ever in Tech. This week is turning into the BEST with new updates to iTunes, Lion, OS 5, the cloud and the new iPhone4S. What a difference a week makes. Did I mention that Apples Stock is up too?

  5. Even after the slow train of downloading it, it’s going to take at least 45 mins to an hour to complete it’s install and restore. It’s been restoring my apps for about 30 mins now and I don’t have that many on there.

  7. Thank you for not supporting something like USB3, Apple. This whole update process would have been much less aggravating with something like that.

They really have to start seeing the light on this kind of stuff. <10mins to download and install. Working on more than an hour to restore. Eye-candy isn't everything.

        1. since when did he ask about his iPhone supporting USB3.
he said APPLE… he wanted a USB3 port on his mac.

I just mentioned that Apple went with thunderbolt because it beats USB3.

  8. Donwloaded the first 700mb very fast, another 10 minutes for the rest.
I needed to unplug to proceed with the backup.
Entered my Provider Code twice during the update.

I liked the setup of the iphone while at the same time it backed up my apps… (still busy, i got more than 200 apps )

niche and without hassle. but then it asked me for the apple id and by default my mobile me id was already set.
so i confirmed, knowing that i am registered also with another apple id. which i also used to buy my mbp.
enough said, here is the question:

    hassle or not ?

  9. Download worked great for me. Unfortunately, trying to update both my iPhone and iPad led to backup or restore errors, with it warning me that I would wipe my iPad clean if I continued.

So, no upgrade for me. Hopefully, the iPhone is actually backed up for when my new 4S comes Friday. But I’d like to get my iPad upgraded too, so I can use iCloud.

  10. I could never do this at home with our 0.5MB DSL connection. I downloaded the 812MB package (iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw) at work and put it in my Dropbox. Before I go to bed, I should have it at home to drop into the right place and start the update process. It might be done by the time I get up in the morning!

    1. “I could never do this at home with our 0.5MB DSL connection. I downloaded the 812MB package (iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw) at work and put it in my Dropbox.”

How do you think it gets from Dropbox to your Mac at home?

      1. Duh… What I meant was if I had gone home then started the download it wouldn’t finish mainly because the servers cut me off for being too slow. In a few weeks it would let me stay connected for the many many hours it’ll take. However, Dropbox reliably lets the download proceed no matter how slow my connection. Plus, I can get it started this afternoon, long before I get home, and have a chance that it might actually be done before midnight.

  11. i am keep on getting this message “”The iPhone “iPhone 4″ could not be restored. An internal error occurred.” i tried everything, restarting, etc. could someone help me? thank you very much!

    1. After my earlier post above on what sounds like the same or a similar issue to yours, I checked the Apple support forums, and there are a ton of reports of the same issue.

The only possible solution so far was one person reported that he disabled a firewall, and it worked. But since this error is cropping up after the download has been completed, I’m not sure what that would have to do with anything, unless it’s preventing something from being properly verified, or something.

At any rate, this was happening to me while at work, and I’ll try it again at home tonight to see if it works any better.

I’d also advise anyone who sees this error to just tell it to stop the process and keep your phone as-is. Some folks have tried to push through, giving iTunes permission to wipe the phone. They’ve ended up with a blank phone and can’t get their pics, videos, etc. back. It’s unclear what happened to the actual backed up data for them, but still, why risk it?

      1. it could be the “phone home” from the iPhone to contact apple’s servers to verify the install.
thats my guess anyway, since I bet iOS5 contacts a new server now for updates the firewalls etc don’t know it yet.

      2. after several trials, my iPhone became a “brick.” black screen and failed to update. i had to download iOS 4.3.5 and it’s restoring now. strange that my iPhone just refuse to be updated to iOS 5.

    2. I’ve had the same problem with my iPad and my daughter’s iPod touch. Apple support doc says to update everything (done), disconnect other USB devices (done), restart computer (done), connect iDevice to iTunes …

After three tries – restarting Mac each time, my iPad finally updated. Still no joy on the kid’s iPod.

I still have another iPad and another MacBook to update tonight … feels like it’s going to be a long night!

    3. I had that problem as well. After 3 tries, I realized that I might not have enough free space so I choose to not sync all my music temporarily. That freed up tons of space and the update worked without any further problems.
