Less flash, more world domination: Apple’s Tim Cook era begins

Apple CEO Tim Cook is different than Steve Jobs, Tim Carmody writes for Wired. “He’s the global business thinker. And he’s the taskmaster. He’s there to give you the key details, clear away the crap and refocus everyone on the big picture. If Jobs took visible pride in finally bringing The Beatles’ music to the iTunes store, Cook took equal public pride in bringing Apple’s retail stores to China and continuing to expand there. And beyond there, to everywhere.”

Carmody writes, “That’s what excites him. That’s what challenges him. That’s where he wants to take Apple.”

“Maybe that’s boring to folks who are ready to write down the company’s prospects if it doesn’t put on the show they want to see,” Carmody writes.
But it’s not boring at all, especially if you understand just how far the company’s come, and how much work there still is to do.”

    1. Steve Jobs’ Apple excelled at combining form and function, with exacting detail. If Tim Cook’s Apple is only about the “Big Picture” i.e. function, then Apple will eventually fall from its grace.

To quote SJ, “I’ve said this before, but thought it was worth repeating: It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough. That it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our hearts sing.”

      1. He was speaking of the beauty in how the devices worked also (not just looks)…………and unless I’m missing something, iPhone 4S is the greatest marriage of beauty and technology to date. Don’t be fooled, the CREATION of a function and method used to achieve this function is a true ART.

  1. There’s much truth in this. Tim will preside over Apple’s massive expansion. The fundamentals are there already, now comes an even bigger push. When Steve said years ago that M$ didn’t have to lose for Apple to win, he was right. But I bet no one on Apple’s executive team would mind if M$ died along the way either. This coming push will stress competitors a great deal. The computing landscape will be considerably different in a few years. I bet some of the younger readers here don’t even remember some of the biggest computer makers from the early years.

    1. He’s been de facto running Apple for at least 2 years. Anybody writing opinion pieces on Tim Cook today is still at least 2 years behind the curve on understanding Apple.

All this supposed 4GS disappointment is an exact carbon copy of all the previous 3GS media and reporting.

The only people who care about an iPhone 5 are the people with tiny 2 inch dicks, they were really stocked to go from a 3 to a 4, and then SO close to getting a full 5. A 4S doesn’t give any extra boost in size perception, which perfectly explains any tales of bitter disappointment.

Tim Carbody is inadequately hung, and has clearly forgotten that without Apple, he wouldn’t even have a 4.

  2. We love Apple at our little roofing company and use their products …..

Today two of my guys said ….. What’s up with Apple, no iPhone 5 they said they have just a 4 with an S on it, what’s up?

I then played the video showing that its what’s inside that counts ….. Both are planning on getting the 4S ….. We will see ….. But I suspect once the phone appears and reviews start, we will have a huge winner in the 4S ……

  3. Fare well, Steve. You did good, and did it well.

Back to the topic: I want to point out that Tim Cook surely knew of Steve’s impending passing while he gave the 4s rollout. Looking back, it looks like he had other stuff on his mind, and this was probably it. I think he’ll be more animated in the future. The only thing he lacks is youth. We (or at least I) watched Steve Jobs grow up with his company, and that was part of his appeal.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Scott Forstall being the new face of Apple keynotes. Nothing against Tim Cook, but Forstall has the vigor.
