Apple now shipping 27-inch Thunderbolt Displays

“Multiple AppleInsider readers reported late Thursday that their Thunderbolt Display orders have shipped, with one Australian customer claimed that the display has already arrived,” AppleInsider reports.

MacDailyNews Take: We can also confirm that Thunderbolt Display orders are now beginning to ship.

“Apple unveiled the new $999 27-inch LED Thunderbolt Display in July alongside new Mac Minis and MacBook Airs, promising availability within 60 days,” AppleInsider reports. “The new display is the first to support the Thunderbolt I/O technology. In addition to Thunderbolt, the display includes a built-in FaceTime HD video camera, a 2.1 speaker system, MagSafe charger, three USB 2.0 ports, one Firewire 800 port, and one Gigabit Ethernet port.”

AppleInsider reports, “Reports emerged last week that Apple had begun shipping the new displays to its retail stores with plans to begin fulfilling individual pre-orders on Sept. 15.”

    1. You’d be surprised how many people will pony up a grand for this display to plug it into a mini or base model MB Air.

The CPU can be upgraded as often as they like and they’ll keep the display around. I’ve done that a number of times.

    2. Why not? You get the component iMac that some Mac fans were screaming for 10 years ago, and the flexibility to attach your Macbook Pro or MBA, when desired.

When you want to upgrade your desktop computing power you can buy a new Mac mini and use your old one like an upscale AppleTV.

    3. I bought a 20″ ACD in 2005. It’s been through 2 minis since then. I paid $999 in 2005. I’ve enjoyed it every day and never once had a regret.

I’d do it all over again with a new 27″ ACD in a heart beat. I’m not cheap. If I cheap out, I regret it.

  1. I purchased an Apple refurb 24″ Cinema Display about nine months ago and I love it. Sure I wish I had a thunderbolt setup on it but for its primary purpose as a large screen for my MBP at the desk it is spectacular. I don’t regret the purchase one bit. I just need to wait for a refurb 27″ with TB to upgrade someday.

  2. Sadly, this display is still a bit if a fail for Apple. The MagSafe cord from the display should have been longer or separate from the DisplayPort cable. There are many people who have both desktop and laptops Macs, and it would be nice if the MagSafe cord reached the laptop on the desk while the display is still attached to the desktop computer, rather than having to drag the power cord and brick out to charge/power the laptop between trips.
