Analyst: Sprint could account for 6 million iPhones in 2012

“Recently leaked plans for an iPhone on Sprint could see Apple add six million more iPhones to its tally in 2012, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated Tuesday,” Electronista reports.

“Using Verizon’s iPhone activations so far, where 11 percent of all cellphones sold are Apple’s, he applied the same proportion to Sprint’s own expected performance,” Electronista reports. “Having the one extra carrier could accelerate Apple’s iPhone sales expansion from 30 percent next year to 37 percent.”

Electronista reports, “Any iPhone launch [on Sprint] could still be stymied by slow customer additions as well as a negative reputation Sprint is still trying to shake. It was once infamous for poor support and has spent much of the past few years improving that area.”

  1. Apple can’t make iPhones fast enough as it stands today. Adding another carrier will only worsen that. More carriers won’t mean more phones sold, expanded manufacturing capacity will.

  2. Seems logical, but he doesn’t factor in that Sprint had higher penetration of smartphones than Verizon to begin with. This was due to 2 factors; one, some Verizon customers were holding out for the iPhone; and two, Sprint was offering cheaper all-everything plans than the Big-two, Verizon and AT&T. So, because Sprint has a higher percentage of its users already on smartphones, the uptake of the iPhone will be slower, as many people will have to wait to upgrade.

    1. Although if Sprint starts carrying the iPhone at the launch of a new product cycle (ip5) it could more than make up for that. I still think many Verizon customers chose not to upgrade at the iPhone rollout because they erroneously believed that Apple would follow their traditional June/July iPhone refresh. Hopefully sprint will reap the full benefit of pent up demand on Day 1 of ip5. And, hopefully, we will still see a tsunami of Verizon switchers on that same day.

  3. I’M READY TO DUMP MY EVO FOR THE NEW iPhone 5. I HAVE ALL MACS AND JUST IN LOVE WITH THE RELIABILITY THAT APPLE BRINGS TOOTHED TABLE. YES I KNOW IT’S A CLOSED SYSTEM, BUT IT’S RELIABLE AND SECURE.

  4. If Sprint keeps their current smartphone plans with the with the iPhone, I’ll seriously consider switching. $60 for unlimited everything can’t be beat. Maybe this would actually spur some competition from the other carriers. Doubtful, but a man can hope.
