As London burns, Apple Retail Stores given ‘special protection’ by UK police

“While agressive protestors were busy burning down various buildings and businesses across the UK, reports suggest Apple retail stores were granted ‘special attention’ by the Metropolitan Police,” iDownloadBlog reports.

“The first report suggests that while a 20,000 square meter Sony warehouse was being burned down, the Police were treating the protection of an Apple Store at the Oxford Circus in London as a higher priority,” iDB reports. “Various reports suggest that all major Apple retail stores were heavily guarded by the police — more so than any other retail store. The Apple Stores were also cleared of stock in an attempt to prevent looting.”

UK Apple Stores remove inventory in face of ongoing riots – August 9, 2011

    1. The minor Apple stores (in the UK) are all inside shopping malls which have security barriers over the entrances that were closed during the troubles. The flag ship stores on Regent Street and in Covent Garden however are on the street itself with no security grills on the windows so were at more risk.

  1. A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot
survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he
is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those
within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard
    in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor;
he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their
arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to
undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can
no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.

    1. What the fcuk does that have anything to do with here. Traitor is one thing. But an islamaphobic bigot like you is even worse. Most of the rioters in UK are white trash football hooligans that just want an excuse to steal and have “fun”. Not Islamic as you seem to be implying.

      1. I think you miss the point. The traitor described “speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face.” This is not the Islamic immigrant, but rather just as you said, one of the locals. Here too, the traitors would be those who, from within, undermine our values. While some people focus on mexicans or moslems, some of the greatest damage to the American way of life, and our prosperity, are those who are not foreign by birth — but who are bringing a philosophy that is.

        1. … the reference was not to the Cicero quote – which I can’t see as implying anything other than a a) white b) Christian c) American as the “traitor” – but the earlier comment “Spread the wealth, get your taxes back, Allah Akbar!”. Salaam Alaikum

    2. I think quote is more applicable to the recent tragedy in Norway.

In the UK we’ve had a sub culture responsible for thrill seeking looting and vandalism, which was kick off by a criminal elite and perpetuated by mindless children who should have been at home.

Having said that, if your going to look for conspiracy (enemy within and all that), the police stood back while they burned innocent families homes. Who, in power told them to do that…. or where they themselves the traitor to they’re own.

  3. Next time u vote for a liberal democrat, remember the diaper-wearing, crybaby, capitalist-hating, pacifier-sucking European quasi-socialists burn down their countries, cuz it’s coming to America thanks to all the nutbags who voted for the worst president since Buchanon! Apple is in their sights; believe me!

    1. You silly little poison-brained fool — do you think the rich Republicans care one hoot about you? Was your life so much better under Bush, and then it suddenly deteriorated? (Don’t get your memory distorted here – as so many other right-wingers do… you may not like how your president is working, but it was the Republican’s removal of regulation for their rich buddies that let those pathologically greedy fools crash the world’s economies.)

    2. You are obviously quite young and ignorant. We already did all this stuff in the 60’s and assassinated politicians in addition. So, it’s nothing new here. In fact, you don’t even have to go that far back. Google L.A. Riots Rodney King.

BTW, it’s Buchanan and I don’t believe you.

    3. Never heard of President spelled Buchanon.

The 15th President of the United States was James Buchanan.

You are such an expert historian. As far as the worst President since, that would be George W. Bush, since he was the worst President ever.

    4. Wow, iMaki you really should pay more attention to world politics, here in the UK we have right wing, capitalist loving, nut jobs who are planning on cutting police numbers and dismantling the health care and welfare state. Also, historically the UK tends to be pro USA and anti Europe.

    1. No. The schools are safe. There is nothing of value there and the mod knows that because they just left there after they got their marching orders from the union workers that already had the keys to those buildings.

  4. “But the minor Apple Stores are unguarded?”
In fact there are relatively few Apple retailers, most Apple products are sold in large retail stores with other consumer electronics. The small Apple retailers tend to be more specialist with a business background doing installation and training for print, graphics and office software, who’ve branched out with the increased consumer interest in Apple products. Such businesses tend to be away from main shopping centres. Bath and Bristol, for example have had small Apple retailers for years, I bought my PowerBook from the Bath one eight years ago, but Apple Stores only opened within the last two years.

  5. Not sure if I would call it “special protection”. You would think it to be rather normal protection, given how many times people seem to regularly smash through Apple’s store fronts and make-off with their stuff. No riot required.

  6. So, am I to understand the an average shopkeeper – who could be wiped out if his store was vandalized – got less protection than the Apple store, whose destruction would not materially affect Apples’s financial health.

  7. im sure this isn’t true.

the police were under orders (for the first few nights) not to intervene.

obviously I wasnt there so can’t say for definite, but I’m sure if any of the doleys even knew what was behind the doors at an apple store they would have gone there first.

they’re more interested in windows 7 at a currys lol

  8. It ought to be pointed out that the “Sony” warehouse that burned down was Sony DADC, which means it contained CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays etc. ready to supply to retailers. Hardly comparable to an Apple Store.

  9. The shops attacked were in streets near “deprived” areas, not main centres where Apple Stores are. Some of these shops attacked had very zero security shutters.
The guilty kids were mainly schoolboys, aged 10-16, not just white trash, black trash too. In fact, the Indian, Turkish, and Sikh kids were called out to defend their own small stores, not attack them. They have a strong work ethic. And many decent people in various localities, like mine, soon gathered to see off possible thieves. I doubt we’ll see anything like this again, now everyone is rallying in support of the police.

  10. Reminds me of the Bill Hicks talking about crime in England.

“Yesterday, some hooligans knocked over a dustbin in Shaftesbury.” … Wooooo. The hooligans are loose! The hooligans are loose! … What if they become ruffians? I would hate to be a dustbin in Shaftesbury tonight. [to the tune of “Behind Blue Eyes” by The Who] “No one knows what it’s like … to be a dustbin … in Shaftesbury … with hooligans …”

    Brilliant.

  11. If it’s true that UK police protects Apple Stores more than other stores or people, it’s a distortion of reading at laws under UK’s constitution.
Otherwise, it’s possible Apple requested* more protection because their fear of that their new iPhone 5 beginning already to be stored for the 4-5 September launched be stolen and sold to some Gizmodo’s fellows or Mac news publishers.

    *
and of course, cut a slice of the 76B$ Apple pie knowing that some high level police members and possibly politicians, could very very much appreciate an Apple pie slice accompanying their every day 4 o’clock’s cup of tea.

  12. Ok a little rationality to the garbage above. The 3 major Apple stores in London are Oxford Circus, Brent Cross and Westfield.

The first was in the middle of an area that was heavily defended by police because it is the heart of London’s shopping precinct and therefore got protection generally.

Brent Cross is virtually the first large indoor shopping mall in London and therefore was protected as a single structure not any individual shop which would ave been poinless.

Westfield is the latest large modern indoor shopping mall in west London the twin of which opens at the Olympic site next month and will be the biggest in Europe. Therefore this too for obvious reasons was protected.

None of these apart in the eyes of the twisted views of someone with a motive led to Apple stores getting preferential treatment they were simply within zones that were.

Secondly from a British perspective this is the sort of behaviour I would have traditionally associated with the US not Britain. 7 people have been shot dead by police this year in the uk, (and we are shocked by that) how many in any equivalent area within the US I wonder? Its easy to have a jaundiced view from afar especially when you view it with one eye open.
