Apple to open stores in Alaska, RIM’s hometown of Waterloo, three other locations this Saturday

“Apple [is] apparently set to open at least five new stores this Saturday,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors. “The total includes two U.S. stores and three international locations covering Australia, Canada, and Italy, and represents the largest batch of store openings since Apple opened seven stores on September 25th of last year.”

Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall: (Anchorage, Alaska): The new store will be Apple’s first location in Alaska.
Fashion Place: (Murray, Utah): Apple’s second store in Utah, the new store covers the southern suburban stretch of Salt Lake City suburbs to complement the company’s existing store at The Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City.
Southland: (Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia): The new store is Apple’s third location in the Melbourne area and its twelfth overall for Australia.
Conestoga: (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada): Apple’s 20th retail store in Canada, the new location is also notable for its placement in the hometown of smartphone competitor Research in Motion.
I Gigli: (Florence, Italy): The new store is Apple’s sixth location in Italy and first in the Florence area, filling a gap between the company’s store in Rome and a series of stores in northern Italy across the Turin, Milan, and Bergamo.

  1. So, Apple has a store in Bellevue, WA which is just outside of Redmond and Microsoft. When I saw Waterloo, Ontario, Canada the home of Research in Motion, I could see that someone (Yes you Steve) at Apple wants to rub the store in someone’s nose. (I see a pattern here.) What town is Dell in? It is in Texas I think. Did we set a store up for them too?

    1. There may be a bit of tweaking of noses here, but I would expect it to be circumstantial at best. I don’t think the placement was made upon that basis. If you look at the Bellevue and other locations, they fit the location and demographic parameters that AAPL emphasizes in all their locations.

The Bellevue location, for example, is in a high-end retail zone located in a fairly wealthy part of the state (yes, throw a iPod Nano in any direction there and you’ll hit a MSFT millionaire…)

      1. Yet also microsoft is building a retail store right across from apples store at u village. That apple store is always crowded so it will be fun to see the small amount of people that will be in the Microsoft store compared to apples.

      2. I’ve been to the Bellevue Apple Store. The Microsoft store is just a couple doors down. The difference is stark. You can pretty much see every product on display and all the hired help with their hands in their pockets in the MS store.
At the same time the Apple Store is jam packed.

      1. It is, indeed, the perfect location. There are 45,000+ university students in this town less than a 10 minute bus ride to Conestoga Mall. Not only is the student population affluent, the community itself is very well-off as well. There’s no shortage of disposable income in Waterloo at the moment, even with RIM’s recent performance. I, for one, will be at the opening just to snag another free t-shirt. Mall doors open at 7AM and the store location is between the Bay (south end) and the centre main doors (bus stop doors).
