“Acer founder Stan Shih has commented that the fads for ultrabooks and tablet PCs are both short-term phenomena and urged companies in the notebook supply chain to come out with more value-added products through innovation,” Aaron Lee and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.
Commenting on Apple bringing tablet PC and smartphone products into the PC market to compete with PC players and creating a great impact on PC demand, Shih pointed out that PCs are the base of the IT industry and tablet PCs are also developed from the base; therefore, in the future, products will still need to go through the PC platform to create even more add-on value,” Lee and Tsai report.

Electronista reports, “The comments as a whole were consistent with a pattern of attempts to primarily dismiss Apple’s success, which he called a mutant virus last September. Heeding Shih’s advice has so far proven dangerous for Acer. The company fell from second to fourth in PCs precisely because it didn’t take competition from the iPad seriously.”
“Acer’s fall was fast enough that the company ousted CEO Gianfranco Lanci earlier this year and refocused its entire mobile strategy, making tablets and phones important while moving its notebook strategy away from netbooks and cheap notebooks to higher-quality systems,” Electronista reports. “The company is believed to be one of those in the first wave of those following Intel’s ultrabook guidelines, suggesting that it’s ignoring Shih’s advice and planning to replicate the success of the MacBook Air.”

MacDailyNews Take: Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt. – Mark Twain
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Edward Weber” for the heads up.]
Keep fiddlin’ Shih, maybe the fire will go out on its own.
Mr. Shih (or Shit?), innovate your next big thing and prove you are right. BTW, don’t steal and copy like google and samsung.
This guy is absolutely right. The iPad and MacBook Air are total fads. They will be replaced soon by the next big thing. Of course, the next big thing will be produced by Apple 🙂
Yes.
Flat screen TVs are a fad also.
Oh yeah…. As is typical in these cases of denial, his problem is when he said “therefore”.
“Shih pointed out that PCs are the base of the IT industry and tablet PCs are also developed from the base; therefore, in the future, products will still need to go through the PC platform to create even more add-on value”
Logical fallacies abound…
This guy & the Google guy should get together for a confab on why telling the truth matters.
Lying through your teeth & misrepresenting the truth only leaves you as a candidate for the loony bin when reality dawns.
ohh for the effing sake!!
what’s wrong with this people, my god man!! here is the proof of a man in denial of the reality. Some one please tell him to come out of his cave. Instead of making something useful out of is life, he only comes out with this nonsense, him and many more that says this product and that product will not last…..wel perhaps you want to look at your own product portfolio and think about it.
He’s just saying that because of his experience with netbooks
LOL! Talk about being out of touch with the trends… Unfraking believable.
… then it is definitely “short term”. I think, unfortunately for him, this “trend will resolve itself as a new paradigm – not like the current situation, nor like any that have gone before. Think of the changes happening when the “PC” was new – who said “the mainframe is DEAD”. The mainframe is still with us. The Padd phenomena will evolve beyond these first baby steps. And I fully expect Apple to lead the way, in that. But, the PC – and I don’t mean “the Windows-powered computer” – will still be with us.
This visionary comment will be mocked years and decades from now… Just like Gatrs’ computers will never need more than 512k comment.
640k, but i get your point =)
best visionary comment mocked on MDN – Dell telling Apple to shutdown
This guy is best buddies with Michael Dell. They probably hatched this piece of brilliance together, over a beer.
Yeah, I’d rather have cheap Acer crap any day.
Stan is flat.
+1
It’s pathetic how non-Apple electronics executives feel a constant need to publicly express their private hopes and desires for Apple’s demise.
This type of statement just tells me that these executives have lost all hope that their own company will ever create anything innovative, and definitely not revolutionary, the way Apple has done consistently.
Here, Stan Shih has stated the equivalent of a race car driver telling the media that he hopes his more-successful rival crashes his car in the next race.
Well, Stan, I can tell you,
“If wishes were horses, beggars would ride”
There’s also:
If wishes were fishes, we’d all cast nets.
any others?
If wishes were horses, who would clean up the horse poop?
If wishes were fishes the world would stink.
if wishes were horses, flat Stanley would have a few stables to clean.
Yeah, and as Gateway was dying a natural, and well deserved, death, Shih thought it was a brilliant idea to buy it, and add it with Packard Bell in competition with their own Acer brand. The strategy isn’t working out very well.
Acer founder is delusional!!!!
Poor Shih Tzu, living in a little fantasy world.
Just stuffing a generic box full of generic parts and loading it with a generic OS and expecting a few cents per unit profit simply doesn’t cut it any more.
Thems days be over, boy.
Where did they dig up a crappy name like “Acer” anyway?
Oh please, as a proud owner of a ShihTzu strike any reference to Shih Tzu’s.My little Tango has more brains and common sense than the idiot which obviously does not. By the way, he hates Windows as well. I have great photo of him sticking his little tongue out and voicing his opinion of such. I realize you being facetious.
Acer isn’t a crappy name they just make crappy products.
What he smoking, I want some. There are days I want to be that delusional.
Ha … I visualize this guy running around flapping his arms about, looking like the putz! that he is.
Such a person should not be in charge of a major tech company. His shareholders must be about ready to tar and feather him and run him out on a rail. He is completely deluded. The MacBook Air and the Intel ultraportable reference will probably be the hottest-selling products for the next several years. These UP notebooks are just what consumers would want in a mobile device. The platform should be just about perfect for commuters. If that Acer founder can’t see that much, then he should turn the company over to someone more competent.
Digital Equipment Corp(DEC) Chairman and Founder famously dismissed PC’s and said they would never make it. He lost it all. The Acer chief looks like he is going the same way. Even if Apple Ipad is a fad the world has changed and so will PC’s
Whistling past the graveyard.
didn’t Acer CEO said the something about iPad.
A Fad?
I was just on Vacation in the remote areas of Montana for a week…. My iPad was awesome to have out there.
The pics i took were instantly transfered to my iPad with the CCK, then emailed out some of them. uploaded others to my MobileMe account to share out…
Sure I could have done it on my MBP… But There was no WiFi for miles. (and by miles I mean MILES….. 3G was even miles away) So everyone got to see the Baby moose I stood 50 feet from as I was fishing.
Or everyone that I ran into while I had my iPad out editing the Videos I shot with my camera, were just amazed at the “fad” I purchased. Hell I think I sold an iPad or two out there… Retired couple parked next to us were amazed at how easy it was for me to do all the above.
And now with the MBA having backlit keys again…. my next Laptop IS the new MBA. Optical drive is over rated anymore.
Sure i’ll buy a portable superdrive/DVD drive to toss in the bag just in case. but the Air is perfect.
But I should go buy one now, you know… before the Fad is over lol.
(wouldn’t want to be that guy walking around with outdated equipment, you know… like an Acer 😛 )
Traditional PCs and note books were a fad. The proof is how quickly they died when the iPad was introduced, and the iPhone to a lesser extent.
People want mobile computing and that means portability. The guy is suffering from severe cognitive dissonance. I would be scared if I were a share holder.
Netbooks were great, until Apple brought out the Air.
Oh wait… Netbooks have no Optical drive either, but they are not bashed for not having one…. yet the Air is.
Wait the Air is a Fad, so they can bash it.
I love how the industry praises Anything not apple, and calls Apple’s superior tech, a Fad…
The writing was on the wall when the Air price dropped from MacBook Pro level down to MackBook level. Why buy a MacBook when the Air was the same price? That doesn’t make it a fad, just the next logical step for laptops.
It is NOT a fad when:
1. You can stay in touch
2. You can write & calculate
3. You can analyze data
4. You can take and edit image & video
My Retort to Acer: Shih-eez! Ple-eeze
If Acer made cars, you’d have to stand in front and turn a crank to get them started.
He was also heard saying that sex was a fad and that big penises were overrated.
I would ask otherwise, “Is he the Obama of Asia, always on vacation?”
I’m pretty sure Bush is the president you are thinking of (unless you are thinking of some fox news bullshit). Bush was on vacation 1020 days, more than 1/3rd of his presidency, setting the all time record for vacationing presidents.
http://www.factcheck.org/2010/01/president-obamas-vacation-days/
The story goes on… and on… and on… and on… against any hit product that Apple delight us…
How many times the iPod was cursed for doom?
Takes one to know one…
Well isn’t that self-serving and wishful thinking? Howsabout spending more time coming up with innovative products instead Shih-for-brains. Oh that’s right, hey run craptastic Windows instead of OS X, DARN!
Acer has lost all sense. I think though that consumers will create some changes. The iPad is great and I am using it right now to type this. When I need to do serious stuff i use my mbp or iMac. I do think it is a mistake to take a dvd writer out of the mix for right now. I like to store my photographs on dvd,s instead of my backup drive. That is why i would never get a air. I think better flash drives will be the future especially if had some really fast transfer system, like a dock on usb 3.0 or thunderbolt or whatever comes next. Working with computers since they basically came out, i have seen my fair share of hard drive failures. As the acer comment goes, companies who think in a box, stay in a box, until it collapses on them.
This from a guy whose company couldn’t jump on the netbook bandwagon fast enough.
That dude must have gotten a hold of some of the best dope ever grown. He’s burnt.
Keep denying the undeniable Stan… But you won’t avoid the unavoidable!
Novelty is always welcome but talking pictures are just a fad.
— Irving Thalberg
How can the founder of a computer company be so stupid that he’s not even embarrassed to make such an idiotic statement?!
Acer: not a fad. Very short term.
Let’s see. If he were to tell the truth it would come out like this.
“We’re dead. There is no hope for us. We cannot compete. All we can do is make low margin, low priced, low quality crap for sale in discount stores. We might be able to survive but I doubt it.”
C’mon folks. If these guys were to actually tell the truth to their stock-holders and the media, they wouldn’t last very long.
Man, I thought we had cleared the neighborhood of this particular mix of bad crack and bathroom cleanser stewed together to make something these guys would try to smoke. Then, in their dream state, spew mind-numbing nonsense for days after only to wake up and find their companies laying in rubble at their feet…
FAIL REPEAT………
The personal computer is a fad
The user interface is a fad
The mouse is a fad
The iPod is a fad
iTunes is a fad
The iPhone is a fad
The iPad is a fad
The MacBook Air is a fad…
I miss SoundJam MP
I meant GRAPHICAL user interface, sorry.
I hear Jobs calls the keyboard a fad and Bill Gates says it is an essential part of all devices. That even the tablet requires it and a stylus- you know, to duplicate that desktop user experience.
One day this silly fad of Mult Touch and virtual keyboard s will disappear. I hope shih will be happy with it as he rides his buggy to work and uses his keyboard equipped device. Silly fads, cars,lights,computers,TV’s..,,
🙁
I would say the Apple air might be a fad if apple is not flexible on it CPU.
Apple need to remove one of the last barriers to stay competitive in the ultraportables platforms
It needs to remember what happened it he past when it stuck with IBM CPU. And now it is stuck with intel CPU .
Apple should diversify it’s CPU vendors and include AmD llano chips especially for ultraportables.
“Shih pointed out that PCs are the base of the IT industry and tablet PCs are also developed from the base; therefore, in the future, products will still need to go through the PC platform to create even more add-on value,” Lee and Tsai report.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
This is HILARIOUS.
Wishful thinking Acer.
Thus your decline. 😆
So what’s going on with the computer industry this week?
–> Drummond of Google goes insane and blethers inanities.
–>Stan Shih of Acer goes insane and blethers inanities.
I see a trend. I think it may have something to do with Apple’s escalating and unstoppable success. 🙄
I like Stan Shih’s strategy. I like it a lot!
@ Acer founder – you just keep believing that.
It doesn’t matter if companies like Acer make higher quality systems – they will still be lumped with a low quality operating system made by an increasingly mistrusted company.
wow, there is got to be something said that even just dissing APPL gets you more attention than your own bargain bin computer press conferences
The iPad and MBA are both butt-kicking “fads” for Apple. Many other companies would call each of those a stand-alone “industry” or even a “product of a lifetime.”
I’ll bet that the iPad alone has produced more profit for Apple in the last 15 months than Acer has generated in total over the last few years. I could be wrong and I am not going to bother looking for the data. But it sure would be funny if that turned out to be true — beaten by a “fad!”
I can’t believe you did not iCal this! ???
May he remain Chairman for however long it takes!
The real reason Acer has been so slow in recognizing the iPad threat is that everyone on staff uses an Acer netbook running WinDoze Excel and an Acer designed Android phone.
I just hope apple will not follow it previous mindset of just sticking to one CPU architecture.
Like in the past it stuck with IBM despite knowing that it was a BAD decision.
Only after Apple switched to Intel did mass adoption took place .
Likewise now Apple is placing too much on Intel ultraportables chips, which is also a ba decision .
Intel chips in comparison to AMD llano chops runs hotter , intense power draw and also horrible graphics .
Apple should be more flexible in all facets of adoption !!
For a good laugh, look at this pic, from before either the MB Air or iPad where even sold, to see when the last time anyone bought an Acer.
