Android phone settlers don’t go for Android tablets, they buy Apple iPads

“In a striking sign of how the iPad dominates the tablet market, Android phone owners will likely bypass tablets powered by Google’s Honeycomb for Apple, one Wall Street analyst told investors Friday,” Ed Sutherland reports for Cult of Mac.

MacDailyNews Take: Once burned, twice shy.

“Cannacord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley said some Android-based tablets could compete against the iPad, but not until at least 2013,” Sutherland reports. “However, Apple is building a massive base of 250 million iOS users at the end of fiscal 2011 – nearly doubling by the end of 2012, Walkley writes. The growing iOS user base coupled with an expected 40 percent replacement rate prompts him to expect 50 million ‘iOS replacement sales’ in fiscal 2011, 100 million in fiscal 2012 and 200 million in fiscal 2013.”

Sutherland reports, “In addition, carrier checks find the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 were top-sellers at AT&T and Verizon.”

  1. And when their contract for that Android phone expires, they will get an iPhone (at the earliest opportunity) because of the iPad “halo.” And if they also need to replace that Windows PC, they’ll get a Mac with iOS-like Lion.

    1. @ken1w “halo”

You are absolutely correct, that is my personal experience.
it just gets better and better with each new Apple purchase. it all “just works” together. I suspect thousands are discovering that each day. I am stunned to see who has just bought an Apple product almost every day when they proudly tell me about it.

People whom I would have never guessed are grabbing them up, others are like a young black woman I met who buys another new Apple product every other month. IMHO that is an extremely fast uptake, much faster than mine. She is a beautiful woman who appreciates beauty and function. What is amazing she also knows all about the latest Android and Microsoft products and can discuss their current merits or lack of merits in detail. She is sharp!

She handed me her second brand new iPad and asked me how she could download many data files directly from a publisher’s web site without having to use a computer. It made this old guy young again to show her.

        1. iPads run flash-based storage too. What do you think, it runs off a hard drive?

Was there something else called “flash”…? It sounds vaguely familiar, like something that was important a few years ago. Just can’t put my finger on it…

        2. INFIDEL! You’ve been blinded by iOS for so long that you’ve forgotten all the wonderful goodness that is Flash!

With all due respect to Algore, it was Adobe Flash that created the Internet, the REAL Internet! Before Flash, it was just a series of tubes! Without Flash, you have no Internet!

Apple has finally met its Waterloo … AMATEUR HOUR IS OVER!

And don’t believe all the lies about Flash’s instability! There are no bugs, just undocumented features! Relish in them!

  2. This reflects what I can see too.
Android users do not want to repeat their telephone mistake.

They tell me they want a tablet and it is going to be Apple’s.
Some are going for the Mac Book Air which IMHO is another wise choice.

Frankly I believe anyone who chooses to try an Android Tablet is in the same class as a candidate for the infamous Darwin Awards. They still walk among us but not for long.

        1. The recommended way for an Android Fan Boy to sterilize themselves is to place the Android Smart Phone in their lap just above their Johnson. The heat from the dual core
cpu in that tiny case will get high enough to do it with ten minutes, fifteen tops.

That inefficient Android P code is good for that at least.

  3. I’ve been saying this a lot lately… The iPad is the first device that shows the masses how often and poorly Apple gets copied.

My Sister has always been a Windows, Blackberry, Etc. user. She was going to get a Nook “because she really only wants to read books”. I convinced her to get an iPad, since she asked for my advice. Now she has an iPhone, and sent her daughter off to college with a new MacBook Pro.

  4. Met 2 guys in the past 2 days who told me they had bought Android tablets and hated them. One had already returned it and bought an iPad 2. He still liked his Android phone, however, so I could only conclude that he had to justify his prior phone decision until he can get a real iPhone.

  5. A fellow worker ordered a 7″ Android tablet online and received it last week. He was trying to show me how it worked and could barely get it to function with or without the dinky stylus that came with it. He got so pissed I thought his skull was going to explode. It took all I had to stifle my laughter. Poor, dumb, cheap bastard.

      1. With his family obligations he can’t really afford an iPad. For what he wanted to do I suggested the small Kindle, which is decent reader. I probably shouldn’t call him a cheap bastard, but he’s the type that disses the price of Apple products, and would undoubtably follow the same path even if he was rich. Some people are just like that.

  6. This is the issue fandroids and analysts can’t see through… while Android and iOS across devices may appear to be the same operating systems, the markets for smart phones and tablets are not anywhere near each other.

Android/Smartphone is not the same as Android/Tablet… people don’t buy Android smart phones because of Android, they buy them because that may be the best(cheapest) option they have. (and who wants to PAY for a smart phone?)

A tablet on the other hand, better have everything going for it, because this is not an impulse buy.

  7. What MicroSloth and Google have failed to recognize is the true halo effect of the iPod and the iTunes ecosystem had on consumers. Especially the young ones that grew up with all of their music on an iPod. As they rolled out the iPhone these teens who never knew anything but an iPod saw a phone that just works like my iPod did. They are now college aged and opting for a MBP or an iPad and questioning why they can’t have one in the workplace.

This “halo” effect I see everytime I need to hire a new employee. I don’t have to pay a premium for great candidates because we let them choose their preferred operating system when they come to work. In the last 3 years, I haven’t had one new hire under 30 select winblows as their OS.

  8. Consumer Android smartphone users are just ordinary run-of-the-mill low-tech consumers. They’re not in love with Android just as they’re not in love with Windows. They use them because they’re available or it fits their cash allowance. Most could be easily persuaded one way or another. It’s only the corporations that seem to protest against Apple devices. I think that half of the Android users had some friend that owned an iPhone and told them they should definitely get one, they probably would. If Apple can build enough iPhones and get carriers behind it, Apple is going to get a lot of end-of-contract Android users to switch. Apple’s all-around product halo is going to be too much for many consumers to resist.

I think the hedge fund managers are stupid or just plain liars to say that Apple has no future growth. Personally, I think they’re just g-damn liars because there’s no way that Apple doesn’t have long-term growth built into it’s products with all those retail stores across the globe.

  9. Android on a tablet is not as complete as android on a phone. Its that simple.

I love my android phone. Ive enjoyed features for almost 2 years now that are going to finally make their way to iOS with version 5. If not having to plug into a computer to fully use my phone is “settling” then im damb glad I did it! MDN is run by idiots who are largely platform ignorant.

On the tablet side hell yes I want an ipad, its the best “tablet” out there.

  10. Wow. Been taking more than your share of Hubris Tablets lately, huh? Why are you here, oh wise one, if MDN editors are so woefully ignorant of platform plusses and minuses? Just to feel better about yourself and your vaunted opinions? Hmmm. Hope it works. Back to your meds now.

  11. I have a lot of friends….
…all of them have cell phones….
…a lot of them have iPhones…..
….a few of them have cells running Android….
….a small percentage also have iPads (2s)….
….BUT NO ONE ONES A TABLET THAT RUNS ANDROID…

imagine that, after the last statistics, Apple has a market share of 26%, compared to Androids MS of 36%, and all that with ONE phone….
I think all the android OEMs are wetting their pants if Apple is going to introduce a second phone on the low end of the scale.

  12. Used to work at a company that did not allow us to use our Apple products. If I hadn’t used my Mac in secret I would never have been able to get any work done. Recently ran into my old boss, the one who laughed at my MBP and my Apple stock, and noticed his new MBP, iPhone and iPad. Some things do change.

  13. I have to say , I had an iPhone , 2 years ago , then went with
A droid x , nice phone – problem is , Android brags about the
Extras in their os , widgets , task bar , free apps, But –
Widgets , at times , disappear from display , apps , alot
    Of ” Forceclose issues ” .

I bought an iPhone 4 last nite , never goin back !!!!!
Main reason: you pick it up, it always works !!!!!!
