Analyst sees Apple launching ‘iPad 2 Plus’ this fall

“FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger believes Apple Inc. is likely to roll out a new version of its popular tablet device line in the fall, but he’s not calling it the iPad 3,” Cromwell Schubarth reports for The Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal.

“Instead Berger wrote in a note to clients that it will be more like an ‘iPad 2 Plus,'” Schubarth reports. “The main difference he sees is that the new tablet will have a much higher resolution screen, going from the current model’s 132 pixels per inch (ppi) to 250-300 ppi for the ‘iPad 2 Plus.'”

Schubarth reports, “Berger’s projections follow a report over the weekend by Taiwan-based Digitimes that Apple plans to roll out an iPad 3 and iPhone 5 this fall.”

  1. The endless speculation on what Apple is coming out with is beyond comprehension. Are these people just trying to prove they can see into the future or outguess their analyst rivals? When the product comes out, it comes out with whatever Apple decides it should have. Most consumers aren’t anticipating any particular features and most will be happy with whatever product Apple announces.

  2. This report is correct. Apple is not just interested in catching up with CURRENT demand for the iPad, they want to generate ADDITIONAL demand through repeated, rapid improvement. Jobs sees the new tablet/post-PC computing market place as a once-in-a-lifetime second chance for Apple to become the dominant operating system on the computers that most consumers and businesses use. Unlike with personal computers on the desktop, THIS war is not lost and Jobs is not just trying to milk Apple’s product line. THIS is the NEXT BIG THING, and Jobs/Apple are going ALL IN for the win!

    1. So, DON’T BUY that iPad2 now. WAIT for that rapidly improving iPad that will show up any day! PAY NO ATTENTION to those empirically-supported stories that Apple can’t keep up with CURRENT demand, let alone ADDITIONAL demand.

  3. Meanwhile back in the reality based world,
It looks like Apple stock may have broken out of the trade range it has been stuck in recently. Finally seems to be trending up again.

  4. Let’s see- Apple can barely meet the demand for iPad 2s, but it’s still going to push out a new version (with a much more expensive high-resolution screen) barely 6 months after releasing the iPad 2. Not to mention that is 6 month product replacement goes completely against Apple’s 1 year refresh cycles.

    Sorry, don’t see it.

    1. I can see Apple having two versions of the iPad being sold at the same time. They do that with the iPhone.

Create the new production lines to produce the iPad 2 HiRez. (Bazil) Keep producing the iPad 2 on the current lines. Charge another $100 for the HiRez screen at the current memory levels.

And they STILL can not make enough! *<8-)

  5. I’d love to see the next new iPad. Apple’s changing up the “typical” release schedules this year, so it’s not out of the blue. But arguments against this would be that it’s too soon, strange for “Year of the iPad 2” and demand is still out stripping supply.
Arguments for a new high-res iPad would be: called the ‘iPad 2’ Pro (or something close to keep the “Year of the iPad 2” as proclaimed by Jobs); higher cost in range of the lower end MacBooks. So his would be a post-PC device, substitute a computer; necessitating more onboard storage.

I hope the latter is true, and this is not some red herring being put out by all the parties missing the super sonic tablet train that Apple is driving (ie, buildup rumors to flatten iPad 2 sales and hurt consumer expectations when Apple does not release a new iPad later this year).

  6. All I need is true HD resolution (720p); I don’t need Retina resolution. I have a 1024×768 resolution plasma, and feeding it a 720p or 1080i signal I know I’m not getting a true high-res image but rather an interpolated facsimile. The iPad playing Apple’s “HD” content is no different.

    1. You can playback 720p within the iPad’s 768 vertical pixels. You cannot playback 1080i or 1080p without downsampling to fit the iPad display.

If Apple follows its previous approach to support pixel doubling, then the next iPad resolution upgrade will go from 1024×768 (132 ppi) to 2048×1536 (264 ppi). You will be able to play native 1080HD (1920×1080) on that future iPad (with black bars at the top and bottom and narrower black bars on the sides) due to the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad.

    2. My bust, Raymond in DC. I forgot that the 720p signal is 1280×720, which *does not* fit within the current iPad’s 1024×768 pixel display. I was just looking at the vertical.

But the rest still holds true, double the current iPad resolution to 2048×1536 and you have what you need for native HD. It will be 264ppi assuming the same display dimensions. And it won’t be oversized by much in terms of pixels – only 128 extra pixels in the horizontal direction for 1080p.

  7. Tech folk knew from the get go that iPad’s screen has a tremendous issue with text readability in bright sunlight (compared to Kindle). Now, a few years later, I think civilian have realized this. I predict Apple iPad 2 plug will somehow combine the LCD technology of the Kindle with the colorful Mac technology. This is a serious “gap” the public is just now waking up to..

    1. That would be great – coupling the color and response rate of state-of-the-art LCD technology with the readability of an eInk display in full sunlight. Active displays such as true LED or OLED are one possible alternative, but I would not expect those to be affordable in iPad or larger sizes for years to come. I hope that I am wrong.

  8. Yeah… they are going to completely rework the iPad… radically change the UI… add a couple nice features, but eliminate a bunch of stuff that everyone is used to.

Oh… and all the older models are discontinued.

Going to call it the iPad Pro X.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers…”

  9. sooooo tired of the iPad 3/iPad 2 plus rumors. I just sold my iPad 2 wifi and got a iPad 2 3G. Which I love but I want to enjoy it for a year before having to worry about getting the next one. For some reason I feel I must stay up to date on the iPhones and iPads. I hate being left behind. Maybe it’s compositing for something else. :O.
