“Apple has initially ordered 15 million iPhone 5 handsets from two manufacturers say reports,” Ed Sutherland reports for Cult of Mac.
“If correct, the first-month figure is about five times the number of iPhone 4 units the Cupertino, Calif. company sold during the same four-week period in 2010,” Sutherland reports. “The Cupertino, Calif. iPhone maker has split the 15 million unit order between Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, according to industry publication DigiTimes.”
Sutherland reports, “On Friday, another report suggested Apple plans in September to offer the fifth-generation iPhone in China, meaning the possibility of an August launch in the United States.”

MacDailyNews Take: Bloodbath.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Arline M.” for the heads up.]
Wow that a huge number , hope it will be a worldwide release !!
I think not. Unless Apple stacks up pre-manufactured iPhones in warehouses from here to Jupiter and up Michael Dell’s ample wazoo, there’s no possible way to move 15 million units in the first month. Besides won’t people start moaning about the antenna first before buying?
Just what do you know about Muchael Dull’s wazoo being ample? 🙂 🙂
I recall a comment from someone who attended a staff meeting at Apple wherein a certain French guy referred to MD as someone who “farts higher than his asshole” (rough translation by my friend from the original French).
It is not a rough translation it is a perfect translation: “il pét plus haut que son cul”. It means he thinks he’s the dog’s bollocks.
If it releases in September as the rumors state.
There is one problem.
iPhone 4 owners.
We bought in June 2010, September would not be the generally accepted 18 months on our contract. We would have to pay a fee, unless AT&T drops it, to break the contract early.
Normally after 18 months they let us break it with no fee.
Outside that, I can see a huge number sold.
Welcome to mobile phone upgrade cycles.
I have an iPhone 3GS and I was told to upgrade to an iPhone 4 would cost me £200.
In the end I didn’t bother, and glad I didn’t too as I’m now out of contract so will get my iPhone 5 for just a contract renewal.
Same here, Petey. Patience gets the spoils.
Your trying to tell me you’ll get an iPhone 5 for free? I too am out of contract with a 3GS… I just checked on AT&T’s site on my account and it states I can upgrade to an IP4 for $199 with a 2 year contract.
notice he’s in UK though, they may have different deals that we do here.
oh, yeah i didn’t notice that detail. Thanks for pointing that out FTB.
Funny. I dialed *639# and it says I “may” be eligible on 07/05/2011. I got my iPhone in June. Mine is the primary line on the account. We’ll see what iPhone 5 has to offer, the IPhone 4 is just an incredible device, I may not need to upgrade.
AT&T did change their policy last year.
they have a termination fee that drops the amount over time. At 18 months i think its gone. used to be like $175 no matter what.
that *may* part could be just the time they may allow you to upgrade to a higher priced phone and higher plan rate etc. Like from a 16gb iPhone and the minimum plan, to a 32GB+ iPhone 5 and a higher plan.
I was able to switch to the iPhone inside of my 2 year plan from my BB without a fee, i was at like 15/16 months, but ONLY if i did the Unlimited data plan. which i’m glad i did 😛
If the iPhone 5 is more of a iPhone 4S… I may just wait till iPhone 6. (maybe)
But if it’s Jaw dropping better… I’ll be buying it as soon as i can.
Built in Real Lightsaber and i’m sold. 🙂
And the stock is down 1.3%…
I say the last Friday in August.
The only market that matters is the American. US market’s the trendsetter that the rest of the world follows. If iPhone and/or Apple go out of fashion in the States, demands from brand happy Asia will plummet overnight. Europe tend to believe they have cooler heads on their shoulders but they’re not much immune to the collective image subconsciousness. Don’t believe me, consult with the Nokia’s winning marketing plans.
Have to disagree. America is just one important market. The mObile industry in the states is in the stone age. I look at the carrier as a” dumb pipe”. Apple fits well with many people’s lifestyles around the world.
because cultofmac has come out with an august release, the WS SHYSTERS thru their media whores will regurgitate the fiction releaeed the day after BGR mentioned a possible august release. The made up story is that the release will be September.
That’s 500,000 phones per day.
Amazing. As soon as ou contracts are up, my wife and I will be replacing our iPhone 4s.
If you think about it, the September (or August) release is a (one-time) advantage for getting large initial numbers. Many of the early iPhone 5 customers will be iPhone 3gs users upgrading after their 2-year contract expires. Those contracts started expiring about a week ago. By September, there will be millions of existing iPhone 3gs owners eagerly waiting to upgrade to iPhone5.
3GS, I wish. What about all us 3G users? We’re desperate to upgrade!
Just adds to the growing initial demand for the next iPhone… from existing iPhone customers with expiring contracts.
iPhone 4s are so last year. But if they run iOS 5 I’m thinking there’s still a lot of good left in them.
iPhone 4 users expect your phones to go slower with every upgrade of the ios, after the release of iPhone 5.
Apple pls makes the speaker system better!!
The IPhone 4 is Amazing except for the speaker !!
