RUMOR: New MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge, Thunderbolt I/O due in June-July

“The Taiwan-based supply chain for Apple products will begin shipments of new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Air models featuring Sandy Bridge platform and Thunderbolt interface in late May for launch in June or July, according to makers in the supply chain,” Yen-Shyang Hwang, Yenting Chen, and Adam Hwang report for DigiTimes.

“Based on history of Apple’s taking deliveries, the order volume of new MacBook Air in the month of initial launch, June or July, will be considerably large and prices are relative high compared with orders from other vendors,” Hwang, Chen, and Hwang report. “Since MacBook Air is symbolic of ultra-slim notebook PCs, other vendors including Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Acer and Asustek Computer are also offering slim models of notebook PCs but these models are inferior to MacBook Air in thickness due to consideration of production costs and sales price.”

  1. Back-lit keyboard a deal breaker for me too !!!! Bring it back please!
It’s seems very un-apple to strip away simply beautiful elegant feature like that, especially when it does nothing to the form factor. I can see and understand the removal of ports, connectors, etc, because these impact the physicality of the machine, but does the back-lighting really take up that much juice or internal room for extra wires?? I think not.
If they update (and fix) the MBA, I will buy!!!

  2. Of course, Macbook Air sales with a backlit keyboard will cannibalise Macbook Pro sales.
I would dump my Pro for an Air with 256 ssd if they light up that keyboard. Like many folks, I have difficulty seeing the white letters on a black background in low-ish light, mostly because the screen glow distracts the eyes from the dark and somewhat gloomy unlit keyboard.
(experiment over, turns backlighting on again )

  3. I bought an MBA with backlit keyboard and switched to the current model MBA 13″ and often wish the backlit keyboard was still a part of the configuration. I think if the new version comes with the backlit KB, Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt, I’d buy again. Otherwise, I keep what I’ve got. I am really pleased with the MBA. (Wouldn’t mind a bigger ssd – say, 500 gigs).
