    1. Yeah it seems strange that Apple would even bother at this point with the next model of iPhone just around the relative corner. Guess they just don’t want to admit a minor failure so better late than never.

  1. So maybe Apple has been leaking all of those fall release delayed iPhone 5 rumors after all. Hey why not buy the new white iPhone 4, there won’t be an iPhone 5 anytime soon!
I could see that affecting some folks who would otherwise wait until June/ July. Not to mention screwing with the competition.
Then if they do release normally in June/July they can appear completely innocent since the delayed rumors were only rumors after all. And it’s no longer just us folks who are aware of typical apple release cycles and the latest rumors. The major news media websites have been following the tech blogs and reporting on all of this stuff.
Now with the uncertainty the arrival of the white iPhone 4, Apple has another opportunity to boost sales.

I think the white iPhone 4 can be largely seen as a status symbol for those who can afford to buy a new iPhone every month, or for the clueless and the carefree. Expect to see celebrities spotted using them.

Perhaps as a replacement many can consider it now as well.

I find the whole thing a little odd.

    1. This is the difference between Apple and most other companies. Others would have said “good enough” a long time ago. Apple didn’t. They waited and worked until they got a process that met their high standards.

      As for comment by Msavwah
“I think the white iPhone 4 can be largely seen as a status symbol for those who can afford to buy a new iPhone every month, or for the clueless and the carefree. ”

That is a rather arrogant and presumptuous generalization you make bout people you have never met!

  2. I just know there’s an obvious answer to this, but I’m gong to ask anyway. Looking at the shots here – http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/ – there’s a small slot of some sort above the speaker slot on the white phone that’s not on the black one. Is that just something that shows up because the phone is white or is it something new? Jus’ wonderin’.

  3. But now the iPhone 5 can also be released in white (for those who care)! I think that white might be nice – it should be a bit less sensitive to thermal heating from sunlight.

You can gripe about the white iPhone 4 all you want. But the delay highlights the fact that Apple seeks to release perfection while others are satisfied with mediocrity or worse (premature release).

    1. I don’t know, but-

      a) not “white plastic,” rather it was supposedly about getting white paint to play well with glass, with both the paint and the glass being new formulas basically invented just for/by Apple. so, technically could be harder than just making some “white plastic.

      b) probably was not a high priority, what with 1) not hurting sales in the meantime, 2) likely plan to push back iPhone 5 for some time now, 3) need to streamline iPhone 4 production as much as possible to keep up with demand, esp given Verizon, and 4) focus on iPad 2 (which appears to have included resolving the same issue, for the white iPads).

I have a white iPad 2, very beautiful. At some point I could see getting a white phone. in general I’ve felt for a couple years that uniformity is a downside to Apple’s iPhone strategy in a market which to many consumers is at least partly about differentiating oneself through a style accessory. So, every little bit of variety helps. I don’t think of cases as an adequate solution for accessorizing, since they increase the bulk of the phone. One thing the Android world has going for it is undeniably the ability to have a newest latest thing every month, and have it look noticeably different from everyone else’s. Yes, this is a very superficial way to think about things and most here including myself dont fall for this prioritization of style over shitty functionality. But cellphones are a vast market, and clearly, many are so concerned about style that they’re willing to suffer the consequences!

      1. Interesting, good points. I also heard that Apple was concerned about light leaking from the screen into the white section of the phone. Not sure if that is true or not.

For what its worth, I’d much rather have a white iPhone than a black one!
