Computerworld: Apple’s iPad 2 will be another hit; expect lines at launch and strong sales

“Apple’s iPad 2, unveiled by CEO Steve Jobs in a surprise appearance Wednesday at an invitation-only media event, is thinner, lighter, faster and more full-featured, and incorporates enough changes and updates to maintain Apple’s strong sales in the tablet market,” Michael deAgonia reports for Computerworld.

“Even without a resolution bump, the iPad 2’s IPS (in-plane switching) screen should deliver wide viewing angles, with movies and photos looking as good on the new model as on the old,” deAgonia writes. “Hardware is only part of the equation. What makes a tablet successful is the software. After all, when the entire computer is a screen in your hand, there’s nothing left but software. That’s where Apple’s App Store continues to shine. The software available through it is generally of good quality, and there have been no malware outbreaks, as happened with the Android store earlier this week. To be frank, the App Store is what other software stores on other platforms long to be, and with good reason: Overall, there are more than 65,000 apps available for the iPad. When considering the success of iOS devices, this cannot be underestimated, and it’s one reason the debate about whether the iPad can keep up with rivals misses the point.”

deAgonia writes, “Other tablets may have newer hardware, more RAM or extra features; none has the App Store.”

“This is a device that has redefined how people use computers, and its reach is not limited to just consumers. Companies are rolling out iPads instead of more expensive laptops; healthcare facilities are using them. So are law offices and financial firms. In less than a year, it has found a home in the workplace,” deAgonia writes. “Expect to see more iPad 2s showing up at work as soon as they’re available… It’s safe to say this model will be another hit for Apple and sell very, very well. Don’t believe me? Just wait a week and watch for lines at the local Apple store.”

    1. You want prophylactic? I’ll give you prophylactic:

“There was a time in this country, a long time ago, when reading wasn’t just for fags and neither was writing. People wrote books and movies, movies that had stories so you cared whose ass it was and why it was farting, and I believe that time can come again!”

  1. I’m definitely lining up for mine on Thursday. I have a feeling they’re going to be sold out across the board for quite some time. They had production at full capacity for the old model for so long that I doubt they had time to fully produce all the SKUs they have this time (which is a lot more). Because they have black and white models, it’s
    6 wifi only SKUs
    6 AT&T SKUs
    6 Verizon SKUs

OMG…666 Blacks versus Whites…It’s the apocalypse and Manson was right!!!

I’m still lining up on Thursday.

  2. My paranoia just kicked in..

If you go to the apple store, the iPad 2 just says coming soon.
Steve said the retail stores played a huge part in selling the iPad.
You can’t pre order the iPad 2 online…

Paranoid me just had a “oh crap, retail iPad 2 sales on 3-11, online when the supply catches up” thought….

Doubt that’s the case, but now I may have to figure out a way to stand in line just in case lol.

  3. To quote my dear friend James Carville, “It’s the software, stupid.”

Dint get me wrong. The new iPad is more than equal to any competitor hardware-wise. But iOS is simply better than any competing system, loathe that pundits want to say otherwise. Then there’s iTunes. Others will shout hardware hoping that nobody will notice the complete lack of apps or an ecosystem. But people are smart and will see through the veneer of their hype.

    The iPad stands alone.

    1. That wasn’t the point.
I’m not planning on standing in line, I just had the thought that apple may not be selling it online on the 11th.

I can’t exactly get in line, that would mean me calling in sick. I work and can’t just take a day off to go buy something whenever I want.

      1. “I work and can’t just take a day off to go buy something whenever I want.”

If you were a unionized public employee in Wisconsin, you could. All you would need is a phony sick note from a sympathetic, government-employed doctor.

    2. One thing I forgot.
      I’m buying 4 iPad 2’s on Friday.
1 on my cc for me.
1 for my sister, her cc.
2 for my parents, their cc.

You think ANY retail store will let me do that? “see, I have a note from my mommy. She says it’s ok” lol
I can’t do the retail purchase really, I have to go the online route.

      1. I’d think that Apple would have single store limits of two iPad 2s per customer or you’d have people going in and buying a dozen of them at a time. No way Apple would allow that. I hope you enjoy camping out at a store and your iPad 2. I probably won’t be getting one until summer. If the weather was nicer in NYC, I definitely wouldn’t mind hanging out at the Cube Store with the rest of the crowd.

I’ve gone to a couple of NYC Apple store openings and it’s a lot of fun to see the long, long lines. I’m a long-term shareholder, so I enjoy seeing those large numbers of consumers with cash in their pockets.

  4. It is my understanding Apple online ordering (i.e. “pre-ordering”) will be available Friday, March 11th (U.S. only) via Apple Stores (web and physical) and certain retailers like Best Buy.

Personally, I’m hedging my bets by ordering it online and then standing in line at Best Buy… Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment, but I figure I can sell my online unit to a friend, for a profit, or simply canceling it.

    1. Precedence indicates you could do either, but no, there hasn’t been a statement thus far to confirm that you can.

I expect Apple will have more press-releases detailing “pre-ordering” procedures as early as tomorrow (Monday the 7th).

  5. Another clod from CW put up a stinky pile of link bait a couple of days ago to the effect that the iPad 2 is junk. They’ll do anything for SEO. Nice to read the summary here and not give them a page view.
