Analyst: Use of NFC/RFID in Apple’s iPhone 5 expected to have a unique twist

ZAGGmate iPad case“Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities issued a note to investors on Thursday from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider. “He noted that there has been a rising interest in near-field communications (NFC) at this year’s show.”

“White said that his sources have indicated to him that the next iPhone will include NFC technology,” Hughes reports. “However, Apple’s approach will reportedly have ‘a twist that will make it unique versus his peers.’ White did not give any indication as to what the ‘twist’ could be.”

  1. I had something similar at Sun 10 years ago. And how many folks carry around Linux distros on flash drives for this purpose? This isn’t a new idea… but leave it to Apple to make money on it.

    1. actually quite a lot different as pressing a button on your iphone would automatically log you into your “cloud” based desktop served up fresh from NC. No USB key. No limit on storage. Zero config on the users part. Like every Mac in the world was a terminal on your network.

      1. Yup, very much like the old SunRay distributed system. It used a smart card instead of a mobile phone, but the concept is the same. All the data was stored on a large server on the network. “The Network is the Computer” has just been updated to “The Cloud”.

    1. I recently met Chubby (we’re on first name basis you know) at a charity event. Nice enough fellow and doesn’t look his age. He did a bit of twisting. Can’t say much about his Chubby Checkers Chocolate bars. In fact, they were pretty nasty.

  2. RFID is huge its been developing for a number of years but is not yet widespread beyond inventory type and other commercial applications. This is a breakthrough to the mainstream consumer world by Apple and judjing from the past, it will make a big mark.
