RUMOR Apple to unveil iPad 2 at iOS event next week

“Citing sources within the accessories business, MacNotes.de reported Thursday that Apple is planning an event next week to highlight the features of iOS 4.3,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider. “The site speculated that the second-generation iPad could be presented as the famous ‘one more thing’ at the end of the event.”

“Apple’s new in-app subscription feature was unveiled on Wednesday with the launch of The Daily for iPad,” Lane reports. “But when asked about when the functionality might become available to other content providers and developers, iTunes chief Eddy Cue declined to comment, saying that Apple would provide more details in the near future. An event for iOS 4.3 could be where those details would be revealed.”

Lane reports, “MacNotes.de does not have an established track record with respect to Apple rumors, though it did obtain parts for a white iPhone 4 in December, and it has also claimed that the ‘iPad 2’ will launch in early April. The alleged timeframe reported Thursday would also fit recent evidence that Apple could launch iOS 4.3 for the iPhone and iPad by Feb. 13.”

  1. Not bloody likely.

It’s too early, and there is no way the iPad 2 is a “one more thing” at the end of some other event. When the iPad 2 is announced, it IS THE EVENT. Period.

  2. An event for iOS 4.3 seems rather pointless. There’s not that many new features, are there? Plus, iPad 2 will command its own media event.

There won’t be any “one more thing” while Steve’s out on medical leave, anyway. That’s his trademark.

Plus, when was the last time Steve did the famous “one more thing” anyway? Seems like it’s been a few years.

  3. nah. Apple will have a “one more thing” next week.
it will be the iPad 2.
and it will be available for pre-order immediately. shipping the next week.

Granted, thats the Rumor i heard.

  4. I could see an early announcement if the some of the current models stay in the lineup with a price drop. Imagine if they continued the top and bottom models for all those who can’t have or don’t want a camera. Reset pricing to 399 and 649. Sales would continue with the same current holdouts holding out.

  5. Last year’s announcement of the iPad way ahead of shipping made sense – Apple didn’t have legacy product in the distribution channel, and had no danger of a competitive product hitting the market.

This year, it doesn’t make sense for them to announce the new iPad until it is either ready to ship, or is ready to ship within a couple weeks of the announcement (like they do with the rest of their lines).

  6. HP event is 2/9. so 2/13 would wipe them out. and also be the day before the start of WMC in Barcelona. which would also steal their limelight. not a bad choice\ at all.

in any event, Apple is certain to unveil iPad2 by the end of February.

  7. There is no evidence of iPads being out of stock recently so that rules out the new iPad coming out next week. Apple would only announce the new iPad a few days before release so that customers do not hold off buying the existing stock. This is how they usually handle the introduction of new products.

  8. Last year, they announced the iPad on January 27th and started shipping on April 3rd. They’ve fallen into a yearly cadence (give or take a few weeks) with iPhone and iPod announcements, so it’s easy to predict we’ll hear something soon and then they’ll ship soon after.

However, I heard there will be a special edition Beatles iPad. Question is will it have mod or hippy hair.

  9. Hey, its the perfect time for an iPad 2. One more thing….

iPad 1 gets its price dropped a little, and iPad 2 comes in at 75 $ more than the current price. A great price spread, and maybe some coverage if you pick up a plan from ATT or Verizon.

    Just a thought,
