America needs to be like Apple

Apple Online Store“In this week’s State of the Union address, President Obama outlined the need for the United States to “out-innovate the rest of the world”. We couldn’t agree more. Attempting to copy others is a surefire recipe for second-class status,” Michael Yoshikami, President & Chief Investment Strategist, YCMNET Advisors, writes for CNBC.

“The United States need to be a leader in thought, design, and execution. Economic victory requires nothing less,” Yoshikami writes. “But is there a model America can follow? Is there a corporation that epitomizes innovation that can be a learning lesson for other companies? The answer is yes; Apple. Apple has demonstrated what can be done with visionary leadership and courageous creativity.”

Yoshikami writes, “It’s not unlike thinking 10 steps ahead in a chess match. Grandmasters that follow this path are the ones that win championships, not those that merely react to the current environment. Thinking ahead, and in a way that alters the product/service landscape, is the Apple way.”

“America must play to win and not rest on past successes. A new history begins now. The past is irrelevant. AMERICA MUST PLAY TO WIN starting today,” Yoshikami writes. “While the rest of the world may have been tempted to give up on the United States, they take the leader of the economic world lightly at their own risk. It takes discipline, commitment, and innovation; all of which America can summon if the desire to win is strong enough.”

Yoshikami writes, “Yes, this is this generations [sic] Sputnik moment; will America rise up and meet the challenge? We believe the United States will shock the world with it’s resilience. And we believe the challenge will be met. The alternative is second place and something America dislikes. Winning matters in America.”

MacDailyNews Take: Debt-free Apple spends less money than it takes in and has banked a vast surplus for the future. America has a long, long, long way to go to be like Apple.

  1. Empty platitudes by a woefully unprepared man mistakenly elected U.S. President are no substitute for getting out of the way and taking the governors off the mighty U.S. economic engine.

  2. Great thoughts from Yashikami, but the US is screwed anyway. The problem is the US is run by lawyers (majority of our national elected officials). Lawyers are not trained to think ahead. The whole basis of their profession is to react.

In contrast, China is run by engineers who are usually thinking about how to improve things and make things run better.

The US is like Microsoft, slowing dying a slow death, and China is like Apple. Sad, but true.

  3. @Journo –

    “Mistakenly elected”?

There was no mistake. More than 100 million of your fellow citizens made a choice. For me, there was no OTHER choice.

You really think McCain and Palin would have made America better after two years? You think McCain is closer to Steve Jobs than Obama? Puh-lease…

  4. Obama’s “Sputnik moment” – that of January 4, 1958, that is – arrives on November 8, 2011.

Obama could have done something meaningful and dealt with Social Security and Medicare and other entitlements, instead the ball-less wonder does nothing as usual. Go golfing instead.

Possessing no experience and no idea what makes American great is why Obama is a very poor U.S. President.

  5. That verbal discharge was nothing more than a copy and paste of many past presidential speeches. Maobama and friends don’t believe in any of that. Just look at his actions and who he associates with. He is just scared he won’t get re-elected and be able to destroy the USA for 4 more years. He is a Commie-Marxist-Liar and was not born in the USA. This will come out. He has spent millions to keep his past from the US. No school records, no original birth certificate. Like his Grandmother said he was born in a hut in Kenya. Like the hut his dirt poor brother lives in there with no help from “compassionate” Maobama. We can’t wait to replace them all throughout all forms of government with solid conservatives. 2012 can’t come soon enough for his office vote.

  6. Yes, China (and Apple) succeed by being tightly controlled from above. China is a nondemocratic nation with massive government intrusion into all parts of daily life, especially economic. Granted, the government control is responsible for the growth of their economy, but that does not mean we should become like them.

  7. That was mostly spot on, except the part about “The past is irrelevant” makes no sense at all.

Without understanding history, you have no context, no concept or understanding for why anything happens, why things exists in the way they do. You are running around with your head cut off.

  8. Sadly, there’s only one Steve.

On the other hand, I don’t worry too much about the Chinese, as back in the 90s, we were worrying about the Japanese. Remember when Japan was the next big thing? China has even more structural problems than Japan. They have an even greater aging population problem than Japan. They have an even greater pollution problem. They have an even greater rural population problem. They have an even greater minority peoples problem. I’m not worried too much about the Chinese.

Then again, if things get really good over there, I can just go to my home in Shanghai. They just built a Carrefour and a subway stop a 1/4 mile away from my front door.

  9. @First 2010….blow me. You and Journo should get married and move to another country as you are not happy in the one you live in.

I see a lot of negativity here. Sure its a rah rah speech but is the guy wrong? Perhaps more people should be talking this way? If more and more journalists keep broaching the subject, maybe our politicians may listen?

Witness the effect that the Tuscon shooting has had on civility in politics. Journalists reporting on the public’s unhappiness with the high level of political vitriole has had an effect on dampening it.

  10. Didn’t Maobama convert NASA to a Muslim outreach program. I sure hope that his version of a “Sputnik” moment isn’t to keep helping Islam, his real religion. Everything that comes out of that guys mouth is an out and out lie.

  11. to add the political quarreling:

Anyone who thinks Sarah Palin would be a good President, or a good next-in-line-to-be president, shows astounding mental issues (delusional thinking, incompetency and/or ignorance). McCain’s terrible, terrible choice for VP alone discredits his entire capacity to make important decisions.

  12. Eh, even if you want to domthe analogy of obama being like jobs, then congress is like a mass of cloned ballmers…..

I thought the speech was terrible. I think our leaders are clueless. And besides, didn’t the Obama white house say the recession was over in the summer of 2009????

  13. Hey TrevX your Marxist public school brainwashing, Government Controlled Media brainwashing, and Hollywierd brainwashing has really taken hold. Pretty sad what a weak mind you have.

Nobama will be proven a complete fraud sooner than later. 5 states setting in motion new laws to require full original birth certificate and more to be eligible to run for president and be recognized on the state ballots. Good luck getting around that Maobama.
