Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer CES 2011 Keynote (with video)

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer kicked off the 2011 International CES with the preshow CES Opening keynote address on Jan. 5, 2011:

MacDailyNews Take: 10:50pm EST: Unless we missed it (we may have nodded off there a bit) he did not mention a tablet. The wow starts now.

Which is more effective, Microsoft’s CES 2011 keynote or an Ambien overdose?

  1. @ macgravy: It hurts my ears when I max out Ballmer’s fingernails on chalkboard voice.

I love how Microsoft was too cheap to secure the rights to display the music during their keynote.

Okay, I feel impressed by the controller free Xbox Live Kinect demo for Zune, Netflix, Hulu, and ESPN. Knowing Microsoft they’ll F it up or make it too confusing or buggy (“that was a belch not a next movie request!”), but that is a direction I’d love to see Apple employ with the AppleTV.

Can anyone answer this: While I know that the Xbox is cash flow positive now, can anyone tell me Microsoft’s net loss on the Xbox has been including R&D, the early loss leader sales, and the red ring of death

  2. The dedicated camera button on the Windows Phone 7 is probably a good idea. The lack of a gyroscope and accelerometer for auto-rotation of photos is not.

No, I don’t need a dedicated search button. I can take two or three clicks to get there.

Okay, how does one actually Cut/Copy/Paste in Windows Phone 7 without any feedback?

Oh no he didn’t! Ballmer just called Windows Phone 7: “snappy”

  3. Hmmmm All I get is a weird ERRO MESSAGE!

Now to be fair I have tried this before and it turns out (after crawling thru the AWFUL Microsquish tech support) that it is because I am looking for the PPC version of Silverlight. There is no update for PPC versions. It would be nice to just be directed to a page that says that… rather then some generic error page.

*sigh* Typical Microsquish. Just one more reason to NEVER OWN A MS PRODUCT!!!

  4. I really wanted to see this clown and his circus (entourage) but I’m on my iPad 🙁 …and I refuse to install that crap on any of my computers, Macs, of course. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Is he sweating and dancing and dissing iOS like all the time?

  5. Unbelievable that he got a prime time spot for that lack of vision speech. No Tablet… Evidently Microsoft will miss even playing in the game, and I wanted to see them get crushed! Threats of Windows everywhere. He actually showed Windows 7, running Windows 7 apps! Absolutely amazing. On a different chip no less! I thinkApple did something like that a few years ago! And Windows phone is adding 100 apps a day! Lets cheer! Lets do the math…. 35,000 a year… they have 10 years to catch Apples apps in the store TODAY! I can’t beleive something that lame would have so much attention. (The speech, not Balmer… He is a complete joke!)

Microsoft embarrases America these days….It is worse than IBM 20 years ago!

  6. @Tommy Boy

Besides, I’ve used search on Windows 7 and it never finds anything you want, it seems they tried to rip off Spotlight on the Mac, well, with the difference that it doesn’t work.

I don’t understand why they’re so obsessed with search if they can’t make it work without days of tweaking and still.

(I dual boot into Windows in one of my computers, just for emergencies. Nothing good there)

  7. I am part of the i-ecosystem. iPhone 4, iPad, MacBook Pro etc… Of course I love my iPhone, but I have to admit, I think the Windows phone has some good ideas. I especially like having live updates on your home screen. OneNote is also great.

  8. Ballmer can’t even make a keynote speech without copying Jobs’ style, cadence and gestures. Change the voice (and the image) and this speech could have been given by Jobs.

  9. @TommyBoy

Not sure exactly where the xbox is now re break even, but just a couple of years into it, microsoft’s gaming offensive was estimated to be $14B in the hole, with much of that being a hideously chaotic development expense. Keep in mind for years they were losing hundreds of $ per box to be competitive, and they may still, although I haven’t kept up on that lately. They are now cash-flow-positive on a current basis due to game sales, but be assured they still have a mountain to climb. In the mean time gamers are dumping their consoles for mobile (iPod/iPad/iPhone) devices.

  10. @ MDN

The Windows guy did do a short demo of the Asus tablet with a stylus and a keyboard and a desktop version of Windows. It wasn’t really that much different from the tablets that MS has failed to sell for the last decade, but the Ink feature (Ink? *ahem*….) was nifty for highlighting things in your excel sheets and stuff. 10 years of development has really paid off.

  11. Liz Sloan of Microsoft was a terrible ADD/ADHD anorexic cadaverous Cruella DeVille-ish presenter. At first I could not believe they would put someone like that on. Very creepy and a giant turnoff with an overplayed exuberance. I’m sure she’s a good employee and mother but someone needs to take her fingers out of that electric socket.

  12. Looks to me like he gave a PowerPoint, not a Keynote.

    Sorry.

To tell the truth, I didn’t bother watching it. But I did see some of the comments by Android fans on Engaget. Boy, they want to preorder now! Talk about the “not-quite-bright.”

  13. Hey yo, dude, piece of sh&t, whatever… Ballmer-the-loser… Why don’t you go back to your Redmond office and start to masturbate under your desk again?? Okay? Ballmer-the-loser, You are a disgrace to every CEO and high tech company everywhere…

  14. That was actually more entertaining than the usual Microsoft “keynote.”

Microsoft has been losing ground to Apple in the “Mac vs. PC” contest. But going forward, as “tablets” (as redefined by iPad) become legitimate replacements for more and more existing computers, Microsoft will lose ground even faster (in its primary cash cow business).

And the loss will not only be to Apple, but also to Android. Apple is one company with one tablet product, that does not usually license tech to third parties. Apple plays by a different set of rules. But Google is playing Microsoft’s game. Android is a bigger threat to Microsoft than Macs or iOS. Apple needs to do its usual clever manipulations to encourage “Android vs. Windows” as much as possible, because between those two, Apple will end up making most of the available profit (as usual).

It was clear from what was NOT said in the keynote that Microsoft has no answer for tablets. I find that to be amazing. They are obviously NOW throwing money at the next version of Windows, but that effort is not going to show any results in 2011 and maybe not even 2012. It will be like Windows Phone 7 being released after iPhone has been out there for more than three years. Imagine what an iPad will be like after three years and four generations. That’s what Microsoft will have to match in its FIRST release of an OS that is optimized for mobile computing.

But you can’t compete right now, if you can’t even play in the game.

  15. @ken1w
The game that Google is playing is not quite the same – unlike Windows there is no licensing fees for the Android software, to the best of my knowledge. Google’s focus is advertising revenue.

But the end result does appear to be similar – a flood of devices in a race to the bottom,

  16. Will someone give Liz Sloan a freakin sandwich!! So Microsoft has finally decided to support SoC. Nice timing dumb___es. You may be a little late to the party.

You guys need to stop whining about he 2 hours 17 mins of dead time at the beginning……… It’s the best part of the video. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  17. Windows phone 7 is so unique, so innovative, so wonderful,,,,, just ignore that phone behind the curtain. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

    We have games… isn’t that wonderful…??

Microsoft… seeking to monitize their product so they can take your money. Buy all MS stuff to make it work… Money, money.

service, functionally, etc is second hand.

    Just a thought,

  18. On a side note. Microsoft has its foot into some interesting things.

I like the idea of where Kinect could go.
I like the idea of some of the software that Steve mentioned.

But given Microsofts heavy handed approach, and talk about bragging. Look how microsoft invented tablet software… and it can run on different chips …. soon…. soon…Microsoft invents EVERYTHING… out of the Azure… Just so ahead of its time.

Reminds me of the Titannic. “What ice berg.?? There are no icebergs here, ignore what the look out says…. charge ahead…. er at least …… that a way. ”

    Just a thought,

  19. There is a interesting video here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/40948187#40948187. It describes what Microsoft’s stock performance was for the past 10 years. From looking at this video and the one above it looks like Microsoft has lost its “vision”. Much like Apple was before Steve came back at Apple. It almost swallowed them. But thanks to Steve he turned it around in time and made Apple a powerhouse tech company. I think if the board of directors leave Steve Ballmer as CEO, they will be lucky if they are still around by the time the next version of windows comes out. The whole Microsoft ship is in denial. They sound like they do not have a clue of what is going on around them. The next version of windows that will run on SoC won’t be out for about 2 years. That will be too late. Apple is already running OS X on a SoC. Our iOS devices. So it will not be hard for Apple to bring OS X itself to a SoC. This could be the next step in their PowerBooks for all we know. Microsoft and their partners has been working on “instant on” computers for years now with no success. Apple came out with the MacBook Air a couple months ago that does just that. Apple is just ahead of their game. They know exactly what to give the consumer. They have a clear vision. Microsoft has some good ideas but they will come too late.

I agree with ElderNorm. Microsoft reminds me to of the Titanic as well. Ignore the lookout.

Also, has anybody took note in the above video of what kind of ovation every time the audience gave to Steve Ballmer and/or some one else? The crowd was not impressed.

  20. Ah Silverlight – part of the embrace, extend, extinguish culture. Good to see Ballmer’s still hanging onto the dream.

When I installed Flip4Mac I removed it from the bundle – the less crap on my machine the better. Flash has gone too now. I’m in the html5 beta with YouTube and if a standard web page won’t load content for me elsewhere, I first try to fool it into thinking I’m using an iPad by using the Developer menu in Safari, then if that doesn’t work I assume they don’t want my clicks.

  21. hey retards, I’ve read through your comments and i think that you guys are just pissed off that Microsoft is so much more massively successful then apple. Ipads are overpriced and are only bought by mac fagboys like you.Apple products are overpriced pieces of shit. paying for the brand, you guys suck.

  22. @Mark Hattersley,

“…you guys are just pissed off that Microsoft is so much more massively successful then apple.”
