“The New Quadro 4000 for Mac (yes it’s for PC too) is better in just about every way over the older card,” Terry White blogs for Terry White’s Tech Blog.

“First off it only takes up one slot instead of two like the previous model and the stock ATI card that came with my Mac Pro,” White reports. “Secondly there is a built-in DVI port and a second port in which you can plug in either one of the two supplied dongles. One dongle gives you a Display Port for Apple’s and other manufacturers newer displays and the other dongle provides a second DVI port to drive a second display.”
White reports, “If you’re in the market for a new card to replace the stock ATI card then this is a great choice. It’s less expensive than the previous model and… it’s faster, uses less space and consumes less power.”

Don’t forget to post that if you want to get decent performance out of it you have to run it through Windows Boot Camp. Thank you Apple and your lacklustre Open GL driver support….. 2.1 is it still?
According to GLView 3.34 on my 10.6.5 Mac Pro, you’re partially correct: 2.1 is the only _fully_ supported implementation of OpenGL. However, 22 out of 23 of 3.0’s features are supported, 1/8 of 3.1’s & 3/9 of 3.2’s. 3.3+ are 0 for 0.
I admit, I’m disappointed too.
Apple has gimped Open GL drivers. Graphics professionals use Windows by default.
BLN,
“Graphics professionals use Windows by default.”
I laughed so hard I almost spewed coffee out my nose.
Game creation (i.e. Max) is about the only area (that I am aware of) where PeeCee’s still dominate, in the film and post production industry they never did, and even in hard core effects and compositing houses I see at least an even split (with most operators favoring Mac’s) The story in publishing is the same, while peecee’s have gotten so traction in the lower end, non critical stuff virtually all demanding work is done (and always has been) done on Mac’s
Until you have actually worked in the industry (which you obviously haven’t)and have a scrap of clue, better not to go making broad statements that make you look incredibly young and foolish.
@BLN “Graphics professionals use Windows by default.”
I’ve been a graphics pro for 20 years. I edit the works of the world’s most popular and successful art photographer. For his books, his $12,000 prints, his world-wide exhibitions, his web site, Vogue covers and so on.

Windoze has never been permitted to contaminate my office. and never will!
Don’t blame Apple for the drivers as nVidia do the Quadro drivers now.
Before you get too excited about the 4000, the 5870 out performs this card by a long way. Better OS X drivers, more performance and much cheaper means 5870 is the way to go.
Remember the 4000 is a very cut down Fermi card with only slightly more than half the cores of the top end Gamer Fermis. This is the low end of all Mac graphics cards and you’ll get more bang for buck out of the stock 5770.
Avoid.

Apple is responsible for Open GL on the Mac, not nVidia.

Are you kidding, you think Apple writes the nvidia open GL drivers?
Dude… buy a clue.
