“Apple has barred an Android magazine app, telling a Danish publisher he can’t sell a magazine about Google’s OS in Apple’s App Store.
“The bi-monthly publication — the Android counterpart to an iPhone magazine Dixon began putting out earlier this year — launched Nov. 11,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “‘It’s funny really because I don’t think we would sell many magazines on Android through Apple App Store,’ Dixon told Media Watch. ‘But the question is where this is going.'”
Full article here.
MacDailyNews Take: If you didn’t expect to sell the thing, then why did you submit it? Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, with which every developer should be familiar, specifically state, “Apps with metadata that mentions the name of any other mobile platform will be rejected.”
This is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to gin up some free publicity at Apple’s expense. Pure douchebaggery, plain and simple. The old “get it rejected and then run to the media like a whiny little bitch” is an unsound business plan.
Apple ought to kick his iPhone magazine out of their, emphasis their, App Store, too.
Would Walmart sell books criticizing Walmart?
Does Walmart sell porn? on the other hand does Playboy run ads by Christian organizations criticizing free sex?
The App Store is not the wide open internet but a store run by Apple. Apple should decide what to sell to its best advantage. Apple isn’t censoring Android info from your web browser but just what if sells in it’s store. If people don’t like that policy they can use Android or whatever and take the risks that come with it: e.g. Android apps that stole personal information, even botnets (going further on the hardware side Android is so ‘open’ OEMs have been allowed to build devices that are so locked down that they can only access particular web browsers like Bidu and tiny proprietary app stores. Some people have bought android devices without realizing the device is locked down to only a handful of apps — so much for ‘open’.) Apple is like Walmart, Android is like a third world Bazaar: good deals mixed with fake products, good food mixed with hep B, friendly touts mixed with muggers. Some people like the safety and control of a department store, others like the danger and excitement of the Bazaar: customers choice. It is interesting though to note that Google has removed apps from its ‘open’ store (in one case 50 banking apps from one developer) and remotely destroyed apps downloaded by customers so EVERYBODY exercises some measure of control.
Talkandroid:
Google : “After the researcher voluntarily removed these applications from Android Market, we decided to exercise our remote application removal feature on the remaining installed copies to complete the cleanup.”
Obviously a publicity stunt. Obviously it worked.
Its like Ford selling a magazine about their cars and GM advertising in that magazine.
DOH!
What sort of idiot develops an iPhone app that is about the Android OS???
Does it not make BASIC sense to develop and Android app that is about the Android OS?
This guy hasnt even got the basic brain skills to work this out.
People like that should never have a mobile phone in the first place!
If Apple accepted this app then what next??
Apple selling Android phones in their Apple retail stores?
Right decision Apple, dont let the competition have anything associated with the app store.
Im sure Google would love to sell iPhones – NOT!
That would be like asking Pizza Hut to advertise for Dominoes.
How could they think it would be accepted?
@Greg M
I don’t believe a word you write.
@MinePlaysFlash
Then go someplace else to spew your drivel.
@bluejay “So if I walk into a Ford dealership I expect it to have Toyota brochures in there right? WTF??”
No, this would be more like Ford sells you a car and then tells you that you can only purchase accessories for *your* car from them, and then they refuse to stock the brand accessories you want. Apple tells you what you can install on your iDevice and does not allow any other options. But hey, if you are good with Steve telling you want he wants on your iDevice, then it is definitely the device for you. If Microsoft did that with Windows, holy crap the anti-trust lawsuits would fly everywhere. Apple is flirting more and more with anti-trust though that may never escalate because it is becoming less and less the dominate mobile OS with every passing month that Android outsells it.
For the record, Android allows Apple centric apps to be posted. I guess when you have nothing to fear…
@ acro
A perfect example of a techno geek who thinks the average consumer is just like him.
According to acro, more and more people can download and compile the source code…… Stop right there, your talking out of your ass. LOL
@silverhawk
See? See what I mean? Sophomoric much? Palin2012? Eh, eh?
Good thing the crazy cat lady cleans up your feces… for meow.
“Mama won’t let anyone dirty get through
Mama’s gonna wait up till you get in
Mama will always find out where you’ve been
Mamma’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean”
Shut up! You AAPL fanboys are the ones spewing drivel. Open your eyes and see what’s in front of you. I for one am sick of what I can and can’t have. Windows/Android is a great combination for everyone now after the vast improvements with 7 and Droid. I’m sorry the openness of those devices freaks you fanbois out and are too scared to escape from your tight womb of mother Jobs.
ENOUGH! I for one can’t wait to see Android totally consume and dissolve the entire rest of the phone market and see you fanbois run around and cry. Man up and leave the cult! Stop crying!
@1984
What kinda idiotic comment is that? Jobs has to go? HE is the reason they’re so successful. Why the hell would ANYONE want to advertise for their competitor? I’ve tried many of the android phones and have found them to be lackluster and unreliable. I honestly find it hard to believe you were ever an iPhone owner (especially as recent as the 3GS. you droid folk are funny. Why are you even lurking in an Apple-related forum? Isn’t there some jaw-dropping, never before seen, cataclysmic, Apple destroying info youre missing out on at Droid sites?
There are apps about Android in the store: “Broken Android”, an app to make fun at people “with an inferior mobile phone”.
Apple is not strict with its rules, and the rules are not sooo clear.
Congratulations MDN!!! …. you guys just have such a way with ‘words’.
@iDon’t
and all the Googlebags : if you are guys are so confident about Android why are you all here venting when Apple removes an android magazine from its Apple’s own marketplace? What Apple does riles you up so much!
You say “Shut up! You AAPL fanboys are the ones spewing drivel”
Don’t want to listen to apple fans then WTF are you on an Apple fan site? Go crawl back to your own damp dark cave.
you say: ‘I for one can’t wait to see Android totally consume and dissolve the entire rest of the phone market”
LOL. Iphone with 2% of world cell phone market already takes 39-48% of the total world cell phone profits ( Cannacord and Asymco numbers,), all the other phone makers HTC, Motorola , samsung, Nokia, Rim, fight for the rest. IPhone makes more profits than the three biggest phone makers in the world Nokia, Samsung and LG put together. Last quarter iPhone grew by 91% from year ago quarter. Wait until iPhone gets onto Verizon and the other carriers in the US and expands elsewhere. Android will be scraping bottom.
Steve Jobs is very confident about Apple and iOS. You google duds say apple is scared, that’s why they cut the android mag. Scared? Then why does Steve Jobs still have Google as the default browser on iOS and Macs? Apple isn’t frightened off Google making a few bucks (As Android phones are now being loaded with and sometimes locked down to Bidu, yahoo and Bing, maybe Google makes more money from Apple iOS. If apple was really frightened won’t Apple load Bing on iOS phones?) . But it’s stupid to have a magazine touting your rivals product against your own in your OWN STORE. get it? Many Aapl stock holders wouldn’t like it at all.
@Jubei Actually, I clearly stated “Normal users will never do that”. It was in the first paragraph. Not surprised you missed it, it didn’t have Steve’s stamp of approval saying you are allowed to think that way.
if you don’t want trolls, stop laying troll bait. some of you fanboiz make it far too easy.
“Iphone with 2% of world cell phone market already takes 39-48% of the total world cell phone profits.”
exactly. 2% sure do drink lots of kool-ade.
tithe, tithe, tithe. the cult needs the devoted to tithe.
@MinePlaysFlash
when Apple makes all the profits and the other guys are fighting for the bottom barrel crumbs trying to survive (this year: Nokia fired its CEO, Pam went broke, Msft Win Mo boss resigns – KIN disaster?, LG fired it’s CEO because of mobile losses, Dell fired mobile chief and closes phone division etc) means that the bottom feeders with shrinking profits have to scrimp and put in inferior components, reduce R&D and have inferior build quality (Go check out Android Folio tablets being pulled off store shelves due to massive hardware software issues). The NET-BOOK-NIZATION (i.e crap rules) of Apple’s rivals. In the end anybody who wants quality will go to Apple as usual.
“MIneplasysFlash”
why are you guys so in love with flash?
Think about it: independent studies have shown that you gain 30% or more battery life for your mobile device (phone, laptop, tablet) if you don’t use flash and flash is a major cause of computer crashes. Apple is taking the risk and having the balls to push technology forward by encouraging superior tech like HTML 5. (just like Apple had the guts to introduce the mouse in consumer devices and get rid of floppy drives. see anyone use floppies now?) If other companies had the same guts as Apple and stood together Flash would be history, in a short time the websites will be rewritten in HTLM 5 or other superior tech and your mobile device would gain 30% more battery with NO EXTRA COSTS! Yet You guys are SO PROUD that you are supporting companies that don’t have the courage to move forward! (they are all gutless followers while Apple leads). You apple haters say you hate apple because it’s trying to stop flash and say that flash is needed… dude think about it … IF flash is so needed to browse the web then Adobe is the MONOPOLY! and have you by the balls, wasting your battery with their sucky tech. You are happy with THAT? Baffles me totally.
@Davewrite
We’re in love with the full web, not the subset Apple approves.
Like it or not, there are millions of sites built with Flash that are out there now. Apple didn’t offer a solution that is an instant replacement, it will cost a lot of money to redevelop those sites, and I don’t see Apple paying for it. With the economy the way it is, in Apple’s world is that just the end of the companies that can not afford it?
If Apple wanted to win hearts and souls, they would have built a replacement that would work with existing sites.
Apple has 2% of the mobile market, but they’re forcing their opinions not only on the 98% of that market, but the entire web. Why anyone would listen baffles me.
scooter:
“It will cost a lot of money to redevelop those sites”
So millions of devices losing 30% or more battery due to flash sucking it is not costing money? Millions of users waste money, having devices like the Joo Joo tablet which stutter and crash due to flash is OK? Many websites make money with flash: if people stand up and don’t want to be fostered with bad tech it’s up to websites to convert.
Adobe and the tech companies and the ad companies who are using flash are ripping you off and making money and you swallow it and criticize Apple? The reason batteries are drained are all those flash ads running in the background. Those android companies tout flash KNOWING that the tech is sucky , they don’t want to lose any sales like Apple but keep supporting junky tech (which is sucking batteries and cashing crashes) giving you a line that ‘its so wonderful’ and you guys support them.
. dudes don’t you realize Apple CAN let iOS run flash if it wanted to (just like OSX) but it does not want to because it knows flash as it exists is flawed and as usual it wants to move tech forward for the user. For years Apple had complained to adobe but Adobe didn’t bother to do anything until Apple stood up. All of a sudden Adobe is frantically (after Apple’s stand) working to make flash more efficient. all of a sudden adobe is interested in making tools to create HTML 5. After Apple’s stand many websites are converting or giving HTML 5 alternatives, Apple (and none of the other companies whom you guys support) is saving your mobile battery.
Really not for Apple Pc weenies will still be using command line dos on green screens with floppy drives, there would not be GUI for personal computers, no smart phone revolution or tablet boom. I remember MS DOS users laughing at the mouse for years saying it was a ‘toy’ (apple paid Xerox and took the experimental mouse languishing in the lab to the masses while the rest hung back).
Apple’s rivals are gutless wonders: they never want to take risk while Apple takes the risk and moves forward. and you guys support those gutless wonders: you should go back using MS – DOS then you will be purified from Apple’s influence.
Bad move, Apple. As I have stated before, Apple is going to control the content you have on your device(s). If they don’t want you to know about it, they’ll keep it off of your device. There is no good reason to not let users have access to this magazine on their iDevices. If Apple’s products are that good, and I believe they are, then they have nothing to fear by allowing their users to read the Android magazine on their device(s).
@Davewrite
“So millions of devices losing 30% or more battery due to Flash sucking it is not costing money?”
It costs nothing for a company to leave their content as is.
Most people have no issue with Flash (consider the 80+ million Farmville Flash users). I don’t play, but I have MUCH fewer problems with Flash than I did with iTunes or Quicktime. Flash does not suck for me.
HTML5 also has battery hit and it’s not insignificant. When Flash is allowed to use hardware accelleration, Flash generally wins big over HTML5 for lower power consumption and better performance.
Flash is supported (tools and browsers) now. Apple’s HTML5 pages would run on Safari only. Chrome’s samples would mostly run on Chrome. For the majority of web users are on outdated IE – they are completely out of luck.
No real argument about the ancient history of Mac vs. PC except that it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
scooter:
you are so clueless , you don’t even understand my point:
“So millions of devices losing 30% or more battery due to Flash sucking it is not costing money? It costs nothing for a company to leave their content as is.”
of course it costs the websites nothing dude but it costs the mobile USER. Costs the user more power, more wasted time charging mobile devices etc.
And you are also saying that users should SPEND more money because you say to run flash properly you need ‘hardware acceleration’! so to run sucky tech I need to get hardware acceleration! which would make my mobile devices heavier, more expensive and shorter battery life! that’s better?? Apple’s argument is that if the websites convert you can read those sites fine without it and with less power and therefore have longer lasting lighter devices.
You guys are like fighting for the floppy drive and no mouse Ms dos.
and your argument that we should not get rid of sucky tech like Flash because it’s the ‘recession’ is bizarre, its like “we should not innovate until the recession is over’. scooter’s solution to america getting out of the recession is ‘stop innovation’. wow. I thought it would be the reverse. So only the foreign companies should innovate?
Dell has just closed down it’s mobile division, dell is an example of a company that follows, takes no leadership role, no risks unlike Apple. Apple has just become the most valuable company by market cap through the recession, more valuable than microsoft, adding NEW billions to the U.S GDP this year because of its innovation in iPhone, Macs, iPad etc. Thank god you are not running the economy because we will never get out of the recession ” to solve the recession STOP INNOVATION – the scooter mandate”.
as for being worried about websites costs of replacing flash: dude, Google paid like a billion bucks for Youtube and is making millions every month of the ads, so I’m hardly worried that they and similar commercial companies need to convert so that flash doesn’t kill my battery. LIke wise I’m not concerned about ad companies making big bucks from flash ads needing to use better tech that doesn’t drain my battery? I used to be in advertising , one of my boss’ had a Porshe the other had a BMW 700 and their business clients were RICHER, will I cry tears they need to revamp their sites or their ads? No when it can save my battery, stop crashes and make mobile devices lighter. For mom and pop and private websites: many don’t use flash (you need to buy development tools to do it) and most are so small converting isn’t a big issue.
like I said because of Apple (and no one else’s) stand Adobe which had been sleeping for years on flash problems is suddenly taking note and trying to improve it and is making tools to write HTML 5.
and your statement ‘majority of web users are on outdated IE’ ask yourself why is it ‘outdated’. seems to follow my argument: they don’t innovate without apple leading and taking the risks. To Msft flash eating your battery and causing crashes is just fine. Msft and apple’s rivals are willing to let users suffer because they think they can still make money off doofuses — their M.O “customers are stupid and should be ripped off”. Msft killed desktop OS innovation for years. Many people are still using XP a ten year old OS. You can speculate how many billions have been lost due to computer inefficiencies in companies over the last 20 years. — Apple’s MO ” we should push tech forward : mice, gui, touch phones, light tablets etc for the benefit of the customer”. Like I said without apple you’ll still be using MS dos and typing in computer commands.
the smell of fear is palpable
@Davewrite
Actually, I like blu-ray burners on my computers, and bluetooth mice with lots of buttons. I use the latest Firefox as the default on my computer, but I also have updated Chrome and IE (no Safari).
I’m saying everything runs better with hardware accelleration. Apple’s implementation of HTML5 on it’s computers uses hardware acceleration. Since they didn’t publish the APIs until recently, Flash was deliberately put at a disadvantage. I don’t really consider that fair. Apple Insider published a great article finding no performance advantage between HTML5 and Flash except on Macs using Safari – because Apple uses that advantage. By your logic, Safari and HTML5 suck because Apple uses acceleration?
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/03/10/flash_html_5_comparison_finds_neither_has_performance_advantage.html
In the reverse situation where Flash was hardware accelerated, there was a 35-75% improvement over HTML5. So again by your logic HTML5 sucks and everyone should move to Flash.
I’m not saying people should keep their outdated browsers or live in the 70s, I was simply stating the current browser landscape over which Apple (and everyone else) has little control. For security, everyone should keep their software up to date, and I look forward to 3D Flash

Since you seem stuck on a converstation about floppy drives and DOS, I’m about done here. Anyone who really reads my posts will get the point I was making.
I really do appreciate MacDailNews for allowing every point of view to be expressed.
