Apple bars Android magazine app from App Store

Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac - $10 off“Apple has barred an Android magazine app, telling a Danish publisher he can’t sell a magazine about Google’s OS in Apple’s App Store.

“The bi-monthly publication — the Android counterpart to an iPhone magazine Dixon began putting out earlier this year — launched Nov. 11,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “‘It’s funny really because I don’t think we would sell many magazines on Android through Apple App Store,’ Dixon told Media Watch. ‘But the question is where this is going.'”

MacDailyNews Take: If you didn’t expect to sell the thing, then why did you submit it? Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, with which every developer should be familiar, specifically state, “Apps with metadata that mentions the name of any other mobile platform will be rejected.”

This is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to gin up some free publicity at Apple’s expense. Pure douchebaggery, plain and simple. The old “get it rejected and then run to the media like a whiny little bitch” is an unsound business plan.

Apple ought to kick his iPhone magazine out of their, emphasis their, App Store, too.

  1. @Zack – There are reportedly several companies setting up Android app stores, further fragmenting the user experience for those using the OS. MDN should have posted the Related Article.

Looking for a specific Android app? Gotta search multiple stores AND THEN make sure you get the one that works for your phone’s OS version AND THEN make sure it works on your specific phone. Sucks to be them, eh?

Isn’t that a brand of pesticide? I suggest you spray it on yourself to rid yourself of that virus ridden trash called Android. BTW have you discovered where the ‘on’ button is? Don’t you always get a blank screen on an Android phone that is as blank as your empty brain?

  3. There are tonnes of pro-iPhone related books and material available in the Android market.

Apple is just living up to the image their ground-breaking ‘1984’ commercial protested all those years ago. Censorship is important to control a population.

I had a 3GS and moved to a Nexus One. Happy ever since. For Apple to succeed in the long run, Jobs has to go.

  4. Apple sells music, books, magazines and apps. Most people should expect them to live up to the standards of other people who do similar retail.

If you search for ‘Amazon.com’ at Barnes and Noble’s website, you will get 43 results including Nookbooks.

This is a bad decision by Apple and I agree with 8^þ – the press coverage is more damaging than allowing the magazine ever would have been.
