MacDailyNews Take: Pretty much anything is within Apple reach if they want it badly enough. And these sort of rumors are to be expected after Jobs’ comments regarding Apple’s $51 billion cash pile during last Monday’s conference call.

Thus an overall Sony portfolio would not fit into Apple’s strategy. Also Sony is a key Google partner; it recently released Google-TV powered HDTV models. Though Sony comes with multiple appendages that Apple will have to deal with, whether Apple has the sufficient managerial strength to absorb and turnaround a beleaguered corporate [entity] like Sony is suspect.”

Just a thought here. Sony has media holdings? right? Apple can do as good as or better with the hardware / software side, but it might want the media rights to allow better adoption of its Apple side.

If Apple is going to buy any big company it will either be one with a huge content catalog or one that can help them deliver content and data directly to customers (network)

This is Wall Street Crap. Sony is a Japanese company, and as such, is impossible to acquire. Sony is in worse shape than Microsoft, it will implode on it’s own.
Don’t see Apple moving into the content arena, although Steve J. did acquire Pixar, so he has some chops there, but it still seems to be a major stretch of Apple, a firm that Job’s has kept laser focused.
Much more likely will be technology buys to become more vertically integrated or cloud computing technology / patents.

Why doesn’t Apple just buy Nintendo? They are purely a gaming company. Have very family friendly (and therefore Apple friendly) gaming franchises such has Mario and Zelda. Nintendo already has a direct download gaming store, which would make an easy transition to the “App” store.
