AutoCAD for Mac now available

Starting today, Mac users have even more to reason to celebrate their platform when AutoCAD, one of the most widely used software packages for professional design and engineering, becomes available for purchase or 30-day trial download for Mac OS X-based systems.

AutoCAD offers an intuitive interface with a look and feel that will be familiar to Mac users. AutoCAD for Mac takes full advantage of Mac OS X, including graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow and use of Multi-Touch gestures on Mac notebooks, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad for intuitive pan and zoom features. With support for native creation and editing files in the DWG file format, AutoCAD for Mac also offers easy collaboration with suppliers, customers, clients and partners regardless of platform.

Long-time users of AutoCAD on Windows-based systems will feel right at home with AutoCAD for Mac, using the same commands and tools with which they’re already familiar. The intuitive interface and context-sensitive help function makes the transition easier and, regardless of background, AutoCAD for Mac helps users to spend less time on the software and more time on their designs.

The English language version of AutoCAD for Mac is now available for purchase in North America and Europe from leading resellers, online retailers and Autodesk.com.

Building on the April launch of SketchBook Pro for the iPad, Autodesk announced on 7 October enhancements for the SketchBook Mobile and SketchBook Pro for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. And on September 30, Autodesk launched AutoCAD WS, a new free web application that uses cloud computing technology to enable AutoCAD software users to view, edit and share their AutoCAD designs and DWG files through web browsers and mobile devices. The AutoCAD WS mobile application for iOS is also now available as a free* app in the App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

  1. I wonder if ESRI (maker of ArcView and ArcInfo GIS software) is feeling rather lonely now that AutoDesk has exited the dark side.

Hey ESRI, get your shit together. You are being left behind.

  3. 84 Mac Guy,
ESRI is currently supporting iOS native and web development. There is probably some exploration being made internally, but their official messages so far is No.

I think they have invested too much in the MSFT dudNET to have the resources to build a native Mac OS desktop software at the moment. ESRI went with Windows to follow the desktop market share years ago. The underlying GIS libraries have suffered ever since. What you see in ESRI is the same thing holding MSFT from producing any true new innovations.

Years ago AutoDesk made some forayed into GIS but was beated down quickly. Perhaps if it starts up again, that will prompt ESRI to really catch up.

  5. Beating AutoCAD for the Mac out of the gate by a couple weeks was the free DraftSight program from Dassault. It offers DWG compatibility, though not quite all the features of the full AutoCAD. But then, it’s FREE. I’d guess it probably still beats AutoCAD LT. Hey Autodesk, how about Inventor for the Mac?

  7. shame it only costs like $8000! for non-student, non time limited version. Talk about encouraging piracy…Autodesk are mental. It’s nice to see it on OSX though. It’s probably aimed at students somewhat, since students are big purchasers of macs.

  9. @84 Mac Guy – besides Arcview GIS, the only PC-centric GIS and aerospace-related program I want to see ported to the Mac? Analytical Graphics’ (AGI) Satellite Toolkit (STK)!! It started out years ago as a Unix based tool, but shifted to PC in the 90s and now has so much interactive graphics done via ActiveX that I’ve been told repeatedly that a Mac port would be about as likely as, well… a port of Autocad!

  11. Yeah, AutoCAD for mac is a really good bet. But it would be even better if the final release wasn’t still in “beta”, since performance sucks! Come on AutoDesk, do something to be proud of. Stop adding features, stop porting more apps, stop making dull iPhone apps, and make this thing speedier!

PS: a lot of times the pointer stutters. and try to work with the Plot Layouts and youll cry… 🙁
