“One way to track how rapidly Apple is building iPads is to watch where they are being sold,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
By our count:
• 25 countries
• 221 U.S. Apple Stores plus a few dozen overseas outlets
• 1,093 BestBuy stores
• 1,743 Target stores
P.E.D. reports, “But there are still 82 shopping days until Christmas, plenty of time to expand some more. In May, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that Walmart was expecting to offer the iPad for sale at ‘some U.S. stores’ before the end of 2010.”

Get away from the big cities and you won’t find any Apple Stores. The nearest one to me is over 6 hours away. That is why BB and Target (both within 30 minutes of home) are important places for customers to get a “hands-on” experience. If buy one there or go home and order one from Amazon, the do it based on the experience of using the device. Back in March, I played w/ a Wi-Fi model in BB, but then preordered a 3G directly from Apple.
