“One way to track how rapidly Apple is building iPads is to watch where they are being sold,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
By our count:
• 25 countries
• 221 U.S. Apple Stores plus a few dozen overseas outlets
• 1,093 BestBuy stores
• 1,743 Target stores
P.E.D. reports, “But there are still 82 shopping days until Christmas, plenty of time to expand some more. In May, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that Walmart was expecting to offer the iPad for sale at ‘some U.S. stores’ before the end of 2010.”

MacDailyNews Note: Amazon has also begun offering Apple’s iPad online.
Will Best Buy really sell the iPad’s or will they be telling customers who are new to Apple, that Windows tablets will be coming soon?
Think I’m going to have to go to some of the local BB’s and check it out.

Stoped by Best Buy yesterday To see the ipad and some girl was playing a game on the display model. So I walked around the Store for 10 15 min.went back to see the ipad, she was still playing games on it. Several Sales people Were Standing around the Widows Machines And did not Care to help get the girl off the ipad so I could look at it.So I dove to Target and got one

Just after the iPad became available at Best Buy I stopped by to look for printer supplies and saw the iPad table. A minute or so later an employee who was walking by stopped to let me know that there were six iPads left, if I wanted to buy one. That is only one event, so you cannot reasonably extrapolate that as representative of Best Buy tablet mentality. That was also before the Android-based tablets began trickling into the market.
I don’t expect great things from big box retailers. But Apple’s products tend to sell themselves, given the chance. So people who are interested in an iPad or iPod who go to a big box retailer are likely to buy an Apple product.

No sales tax collected from Amazon. At least not here in Florida

Figure Frys will sell them before the end of the year also. Basically due to them having 1/2 an isle full of cases just for iPad’s.

I was at my local Best Buy and they had an iPad on display in the PC section with no one going near it. I thought Best Buy had screwed up once again.
I went over to the Mac area, in the corner on the other side of the printer isle, and there were 4 iPads and several Macs on display. Every machine, including the Macs, had a customer test driving it and there were 3 salespersons, one a hot brunette, answering questions.
I was amazed. The iPads all had the same demo Apps as the Apple Stores have and they were selling quite well.
Knowledgeable Apple/Mac salespeople and one a hot girl at a Best Buy. Whoda thunkit?

This weekend’s Target flyer in newspapers had the entire front page dedicated to the iPad. They are pushing it heavily.

@Big Als MBP
At my closest BB, they had Mac’s but they are no longer found there (Apple store opened a mile away). So that’s why I’m wondering how BB without Mac’s actually do selling the iPads.

As a stockholder, I suppose more outlets the better. But for the customer, I don’t see much advantage unless one is too far from the nearest Apple Store and one simply wants to touch the iPad. Best Buy, Target and (if it happens) Wallmart are all charging full price, and none will provide the service and experience one gets directly from Apple. And if it’s convenience, I can order from Amazon, MacConnection or MacMall and avoid the tax.

Get away from the big cities and you won’t find any Apple Stores. The nearest one to me is over 6 hours away. That is why BB and Target (both within 30 minutes of home) are important places for customers to get a “hands-on” experience. If buy one there or go home and order one from Amazon, the do it based on the experience of using the device. Back in March, I played w/ a Wi-Fi model in BB, but then preordered a 3G directly from Apple.
