RBC Capital’s Mike Abramsky “is not surprised Apple and Verizon may be having trouble striking a deal,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
P.E.D. reports, “If the two companies don’t come to terms, what does it mean? According to Abramsky… The impact of on RBC’s estimates (currently assume 55 million iPhones fiscal 2011) is ‘nominal’ … He had previously assumed 6-8 million iPhones could come from Verizon in 2011, but some of that — perhaps up to 4-5 million — could be made up by T-Mobile and Sprint.”
“Given Apple shares has been rising recently largely on its fundamentals, Abramsky doesn’t expect this development to have a major negative impact on its share price,” P.E.D. reports.

I’ve had huge issues with home reception on either Verizon or AT&T living in the hills of the San Fernando Valley. AT&T wisely gave me a 3G Microcell for free recently and after I replaced an aging router and hub with something newer it worked like a champ. That and my new 32Gb iP4 and im one happy camper.
I think we’re seeing here the start of the norm with a home 3G/4G booster ensuring reception at least there you can always count on. Important if you don’t have a land line.
I agree, no Verizon iPhone until LTE is rolled out. 2012 maybe?

All your carriers use the same signal. No problem over there in Europe GSM is king.

Verizon loves to hobble their phones and limit freedom outside their monetized garden. Apple is trying to give us more.

I see a cute tv commercial in Apple’s future…
Picture it’s Christmas time… Location: Land of the Misfit Telcos.
Santa’s sleigh, driven by iPhone 4, is taking off with T-Mobile and Sprint, along with AT&T, logos in Santas bag…
Meanwhile, Verizon is running after the sleigh and when the sleigh becomes airborne and flies away, the Verizon logo slumps and sighs disgusted when it gets left behind for the second time!

@ timD. Agree with your point about need for carriers in USA, but android is still coming on strong here in the uk too. iPhone had approx 4% better share here than the States last time i looked.

One-touch, world-wide IP telephony, FaceTime. Cell phones are so over. Carriers are gateways to the pipe, nothing more. Ubiquitous WiFi would be just as good, if not better. Sprint or Virgin mobile hot spots.

+1 for giving the iPhone to every carrier except Verizon since they denied apple in the first place. Make those hypocrites suffer.

I hope Mike Abramsky is long on Verizon and it bites him in the behind.

Sprint is CDMA and Sprint is migrating to WiMax. Neither of those are compatible with AT&T’s chosen technology.
Apple *might* build a CDMA/GSM(UMTS)/LTE phone for the “iPhone 4G” (aka iPhone 5). The silicon for that exists and is not unreasonable. This would allow a T-Mobile/Verison/AT&T iPhone. However, it is *extremely* unlikely they will build a CDMA/GSM(UMTS)/LTE/WiMax phone. Everything I’ve read/heard about that silicon indicates it’s just too big and to power hungry to fit into Apple’s plans. And, Apple building a CDMA/WiMax iPhone for Sprint and a few other telcos around the world is virtually impossible.
Therefore it is *EXTREMELY* unlikely Apple will pick up Sprint before it picks up Verison.

Go with Sprint. Go with T-Mobile. Go with somebody. I’m tired of dropped calls and “no service” on my iPhone. I actually use it as a phone too!
