MacDailyNews Take: The sooner, the better. The first three things that “average” (non-techie) people ask about when they see our iPhone 4 units are: FaceTime, FaceTime, and FaceTime.
As early adopters, we’ll simply sell our current iPads and apply the proceeds towards new ones. We would not give up the months we’ve already spent with our first-gen iPads for anything.
Looks like Apple might soon address my one complaint and reason for not buying a first generation iPad. Once the iPad has facetime, I’m purchasing it immediately. (Hopefully this rumor is accurate.)
If they release them any sooner than early next year it will be an insult for the early adopters who’ve driven the success of the product.
So glad I held off.. As tempting as it is to give in, history has proven that it’s always best to wait at least 6 months before buying a “brand” new Apple product.. Quick revisions and/or price cuts are almost a given.

This confirms what my gut has been telling me for almost 2 months. It makes so much sense for Apple to update the iPad hardware around November. And then Steve Jobs mentioned last week that the iPad was getting HDR photos in November, which would require the iPad to have a camera in November.
A front facing camera, and maybe more RAM, are some of the only hardware advantage the (future) iPad competitors have going for them. If Apple comes out with the iPad 2, with front and back cameras, FaceTime, 512 MB of RAM, before the holiday season, it will completely crush any supposed competition. I’m already skeptical any of the future competitors will gain much of the table market, but with a new iPad, it will literally be like the Kin release. All the competitors will be DOA.
Imagine this linup:
iPad v1 starts at $400
iPad v2 starts at $500 (with cameras, FaceTime, and twice the RAM)
New iPod touch starts at $229
That right there will be a bloodbath for the holiday season.
Now imagine if Apple can put the RetinaDisplay in the iPad 2. That’s quite a few pixels, and might require a beefier GPU, but it would be awesome.
A better use of time would be getting the iPhone to other US carriers.
Lots of people will pay $500 for a device that let’s you video-chat with an image as good as FaceTime.
There’s a huge market for video chatting with families back home.
Lots of shops catering to immigrant populations sell crappy home “videoconferencing” phones for around the $350. Image quality sucks.

Obviously the early adopters weren’t all that hung up on a camera being a must have item.
I only bought the iPad last week, and already it has proven indispensable. If I return it, it would only be to upgrade to the new version. I hope it happens,

The iPad was the first Apple product I bought on the first day and haven’t regretted it. I’ll be in line for the next one.
Another example, I bought my wife a MacBook and then the next month Apple updated it. That’s what I get for waiting 11 months. (I was not privy to Apple’s refresh cycles. My bad.)
If the reason for not buying immediately is because you can wait, then that’s a valid reason (because if you can wait it means you dont need it). But if you need it then waiting for a price decrease or a new update just doesn’t make sense.
I think Apple should wait till next year. I can wait.

How would this be an insult? Your iPad won’t change a bit and that’s what you get for getting a first generation product from any manufacturer. This would be nothing but a positive for consumers. And it will put their “competitors” at a major disadvantage because they won’t be able to flaunt not having video cam functionality as a disadvantage for the iPad. Kudos to Apple (and a very good move on their part if said rumor is true…)
There’s no way Apple is going to refresh the iPads before the end this year. Apple is locked down for Christmas now, and we won’t see any new hardware products.
I’m expecting a new iPad with camera, but my guess is that it wouldn’t be available until after March, 2011.
Very interesting, our APR rep almost let slip that a new camera equipped iPad was on the way soon. When I picked him up on it he said “January” but after this rumour, and that thing from Steve at the keynote (which I admit I missed the first time) I’m wondering if I should delay my iPad purchase…
YES!!!! This is exactly why I decided to wait…….for the front face camera. Getting a better display and FaceTime compatibility will be bonuses.

Whenever it comes out, I’ll be getting it. I’m just not the type to buy the first iteration of anything. I’ve been spending a lot of time with one that a colleague at work has and at the local Apple Store. I don’t *need* one as I have a MBP for work but I definitely want one for myself and the family at home and for vacations and weekend getaways. I don’t like having to take a laptop around for those kinds of occasions. Camera would be really nice.

It’s not going to happen before end of 2010. Apple is only now reaching the level of production needed to meet demand for the current iPad models. Apple will continue producing the current iPad to meet the even higher demand during the holidays.
The only thing that would motivate Apple to release a new iPad earlier than “early 2011” is competition. There is no competition.

Since iPad was introduced and went on pre-sale during the first quarter of this year, that’s basically a 12-month cycle. The next iPad will probably go on sale either in late March or early April, depending on which quarter Apple wants the initial “surge” of new iPad revenue to fall.
Now all Apple needs to do is incorporate IOS Facetime functionality in Macbooks and iMacs and that will be a wrap for verizon, google, microsquish and any other company.
I don’t think I have used any piece of electronics as much as I’ve used my iPad in the last 6 months. My PlayStation 3, at one third the price, hasn’t received one hundredth the amount of use that my iPad has seen.
I don’t know if I’ll be running out to buy the upgraded version as quick as I did this one. Not until I know more people with face time enabled devices. The kids will definitely be getting the upgraded iPod Touches either for Christmas or their birthdays!

There’s one more thing… competition (as you state), and holdouts like me! When I heard early on that the iPad has a section within it that looks like space for a cam, I wanted to wait for that cam to come to fruition. I am sure there are plenty of people like me who are technically literate and have been holding out on their iPad purchase for this kind of functionality. It’s only going to make the iPad a (much) larger phenomenon that it already is and solidify Apple as kind of tablets. The sooner the better!

Yes, the next generation iPad will be awesomer. We can speculate that it will have more RAM, a camera (or two) and FaceTime. It may also have more storage and other enhancements.
But…
When the new iPad gets released, your old iPads will still retain their value. Take a look at the retail price you paid and the used price you’ll get and divide that by the number of months.
What you’ll find is that the more months you have it, the less it costs per month.
There’s that whole Revision 1 myth that refuses to die. So many people wait based on this myth and often it ends up not being in their best interest.
Some classic cases in point:
Apple has never really revised a specific model of iPhone. The did once make a baseband hardware change that ironically made the 2nd revision worse (if you cared about jailbreaking). Other than that, each model has been unrevised until discontinued.
To add to this, each model of iPhone could be sold used for more than the retail price if you sold it as soon as the new model came out.
Now the iPhone has benefits from the subsidy and contract that make buying it on day 1 more worthwhile, but in general, the consumer devices from Apple make sense to buy on day one rather than wait, and the iPad certainly won’t be an exception to that.
Personally, I like it this way. I always get the iPhone on day one, and got the iPad on day one (with 3G). Whatever the new iPad has, I know it only has to be worth a few bucks for me to upgrade because I can sell my current one so easily.

Excellently put. Moral of the story? Don’t wait. My iPad has seriously changed how I use technology. Forever. Absolutely no regrets about getting version 1. And I can’t wait for version 2. If Apple started selling version 2 tomorrow, I would be ecstatic! And Like macslut said, if I decide to sell my current iPad it will have great resale value.

They are selling all they can make as it is. Apple will wait until next year after Google, HP, MS, etc. show their hole cards (if they turn out to have one). Also, as kcwookie pointed out, it will disappoint early adopters needlessly.

Agreed macslut.. I guess it depends on your needs at the given time. Since the next iteration of iPad personally will be for my entertainment almost exclusively, it makes sense to wait. Others may find the immediacy of owning iPad a plus given their work / lifestyle situation.
Revision 1 isn’t a myth, though. Apple tends to get things right the first time so it really is a non-issue with their products. If we were talking about automobies, revision 1 is far from a “myth” I think you will agree.

No it won’t, any more than buyers of the Model T should feel cheated when they see a BMW. You bought the iPad for what it offered. It still offers those functions, and will likely improve over time with new iOS releases. But Apple cannot add a camera or an LED projector to your generation one iPad via software. Sorry. But you got what you paid for.

My buddies sixty something mother held out for the 3G version but did buy it the week it came out. Not your typical early adopter. She took classes at the Apple Store to learn how to use it. The only thing she uses her MBP for now is printing and syncing. After two plus years of using the MBP she was barely getting the hang of it. She (and others I know) certainly don’t fit the typical early adopter profile. Meaning this wasn’t meant for the geeks to tweak and work out the bugs. Runaway best sellers don’t leave much room for error. No harm no foul.
I’m sure she isn’t going to bitch about lack of Facetime etc on the old model even though she has one son in TX with grandkids (PC user though). She’ll just go out and by the new if she deems it necessary and her youngest gets with the program and ditches his MSWin and Android appliances (oldest son is firmly in the Mac/iPhone camp). I suggest you do the same without complaint. This isn’t at all like the Apple price drop of the iPhone six months after launch. Not at all.

Since Apple is STILL selling every iPad almost as soon as it gets boxed up at the factory, I can’t say the so-called “holdouts” offer too much motivation for Apple at this time. Apple is selling all it can make to the “non-holdouts,” and that will continue through the holidays. You can’t sell something faster than you can make it. And soon after the holidays, it will be the one-year point (or close enough) and it will be time for the new models to appear. And as I mentioned before, “The next iPad will probably go on sale either in late March or early April, depending on which quarter Apple wants the initial ‘surge’ of new iPad revenue to fall.”

If you feel dissed and don’t wanna upgrade to the next iPad because of it, who knows.. maybe some third party will add some crappy cam dongle that is compatible with Facetime. If that doesn’t materialize (doubt it will) E-bay your current iPad when appropriate and get the next iPad when it comes out. Don’t feel insulted that’s silly. If Apple released a new version in November it would only catapult iPad further ahead of the “competition” before they are even out of the gates and give Facetime an even stronger boost in market share because of it’s entrance during the holiday season. Do it Apple! (eeeee!)
Problem with rumors is they can put the breaks on current sales.
I know I have a current generation iPad and I was planning to get one for the kids, but now I will wait cause I would love to be able to do face Time with them when they are at there mothers.

Upgrading the iPad sooner rather than later will only up the “want” factor. (eeeee!)

Or may be augmented reality for star gazing.

I think of my statements as both wishful thinking and common sense (especially regarding the reference of getting Facetime into as many hands as soon as possible by using the holiday shopping season as the vehicle.) Apple has surprised us before. This could be another case scenario (i.e. never say never). I wouldn’t be surprised if “armchair CEO’s” (aka customers for a better term) are listened to by Apple. I’m sure Apple in fact finds this website very handy for spotting user trends & etc. In fact, if they weren’t using this website for such purposes they would be in error. I’m HOPING for a November release of the next iteration of the iPad. I EXPECT it will probably come in January. The sooner the iPad gets upgraded the better for both Apple and it’s customers.

There’s something called an exclusivity agreement with AT&T. When that expires then yes, it will happen.

A fair price would be $99 for a beautiful aluminum cylinder shaped iSight cam that is battery operated and snaps into the dock connector. Perhaps the cam could be flipped rearward for videos and still photos. It would be appropriate to release this cam accessory the same time iOS4 is released for iPad in November. Such a cam could give Face Time access to all iOS4 devices that came without build in cameras.

I’m holding on to my current iPad. I really don’t want to stare at people’s faces and I’m sure they don’t want to look at me. Besides, an iPad is not a phone, and I don’t need a giant iPhone.

In order to get the unlimited data plan, you had a very narrow window in which to become a first adopter. This would only add insult to injury unless it’s available on Verizon or Sprint

I don’t use iChat on my iMac, why would I use it on an iPad or iPod touch? Feels uncomfortable and really isn’t as useful as it seems.
Just give me the darn ios update already and I’m happy.
Apple’s not going to make the same mistake with iPad as with iPhone. Android got a toe hold because of limited availability and some missing features.
I don’t see that happening to the iPad. The front facing camera is a huge deal to many many people, me included. I’ve been waiting patiently. With two sons in college and one left at home, we are doing a lot of iChats / Skype video calls.
Though I think verison 1 is a great enterprise machine, and Apple should continue to pump out those without cameras as fast as they can.
Apple definetly needs to expand it’s manufacturing base to get more product into the market. This consistent shortage is equally frustrating from both a customer and shareholder perspective.
What will really jump-start FaceTime to the next level is releasing it to Macs. That will provide a nearly immediate critical mass and help spur even more hardware sales (both toward Macs and toward iPhones/iPads/iPod Touches).
For all of you who won’t buy the first version of an Apple product, you should know that the first iteration of the iPad was iPhone 2007.
iPad won’t have a Retina display for a few years because they’ll remain too expensive for such a big screen.
I bought iPad on day one and have not regretted. I sold an iPhone 3GS 32gb for $325.00 and got a 32gb iPod touch for the face time. I have sprint 4g hotspot and it works great with Skype on iPad or iPod touch. I am happy now. I agree face time on Mac would get the ball rolling. When Apple decides to put out Facetime on the iPad nobody know except Apple. Surely they have a roadmap that has served them very well up to now. With over 7 million ipads sold already, Apple is no rush to offer better specs at the same price as current ipads. When worthy competition spends millions promoting how their tablet has a camera, boom Apple will drop a new model on their head. I a guessing that iPad 2 will only have a facetime camera and not a rear camera. Apple rarely piles every feature into every product. This creates a need for multiple products. Apple creates products for the tech lover that almost becomes addictive. I for one am a junkie. The iPod touch 4g is my latest fix.

I will wait until my iPad battery runs out, then swap it for free with an iPad 3rd gen. For a phone, I use a reliable Nokia that never drops calls like my friends’ iPhones.
You holdouts have more control than I do, I bought one on day one. I don’t think people really understand how their computing habits will change. I hardly ever pickup my Macbook Pro now.
Well most of us figured that when apple came out with iTouch 4.

I thought that FaceTime was one if the least exiting features of the iPhone 4. I had no idea it would get this attention and I don’t get why. Why would I like to see the person I talk to? That’s why I’m talking on the phone. Well sometimes it could be fun but I don’t get it. I thought the A4 and the Retina display was the mist exciting.
But since FaceTime seems to be so popular I think it was a mistake that Apple made it an open standard. This could be another driver for iPhone adoption. Or Apple could have licensed the technology to other companies. It was a nice to make it open but perhaps a mistake. This could have been a really nice IP for Apple.
Then that means iWork is coming to iPhone 4 right???? I sure hope.
