“Oracle Corp. has hired former Hewlett-Packard Co. CEO Mark Hurd to help lead the database software maker in a pivotal moment in Oracle’s 33-year history as it tries to muscle in on more of HP’s turf,” Jordan Robertson reports for The Associated Press.

“Hurd’s appointment Monday as co-president of Oracle comes a month after he resigned from HP following a sexual harassment investigation,” Robertson reports. “Oracle CEO Larry Ellison loudly came to Hurd’s defense at the time, calling HP’s decision to oust Hurd the worst personnel decision since Apple Inc. forced out Steve Jobs — another of Ellison’s friends — 25 years ago.”
Robertson reports, “Oracle is now competing in one of HP’s biggest businesses — selling the computer servers that power businesses’ back offices. The company said in a statement that Hurd will also serve as a member of the board of directors and will report to Ellison… ‘Mark did a brilliant job at HP and I expect he’ll do even better at Oracle,’ Ellison said. ‘There is no executive in the IT world with more relevant experience than Mark. Oracle’s future is engineering complete and integrated hardware and software systems for the enterprise.'”
Robertson reports, “One of Oracle’s two presidents — Charles Phillips, a former Marine and investment banker who was with the company for seven years — is resigning to make room for Hurd. The other — Safra Catz, Oracle’s former chief financial officer — is staying.”
“Ellison said that Phillips wanted to leave in December, but that Ellison asked him to stay through the integration of Sun Microsystems,” Robertson reports. “Phillips was in the news earlier this year when pictures of him snuggling with his former mistress appeared on billboards around the U.S. Ellison said Oracle will miss Phillips’ talent and leadership but that he respects Phillips’ decision to leave.”

MacDailyNews Take: Crazy Larry strikes again.
H-P stock dove on his leaving, Oracle’s stock rising on his joining.
Crazy Larry’s half-house for philanderers.
Bill Clinton, Tiger Woods, Gary Hart, and John Edwards will be joining Oracle’s board next week.
Part of Hurd’s terms and conditions is if he fsck’s up, Crazy Larry gives him a spanking on YouTube.
Only in America that someone pads his expense repot and gets rewarded for it.
Anyway, Ellison relishes this. Now oracle is privvy into the storage and services strategies of HP. that really is all Hurd is worth and since most of these execs are of welch’s ilk, they applaud Ellison for standing up for their values. Now oracle will really sell like hotcakes.
Stop passing judgement – he’s a talented guy, and Oracle is happy to have him. Obviously all of you have all the facts, and know better than Ellison. Of course you do. And that’s why you make billions and spend your free time posting on the MDN forums. Try turning the criticism and pitiful comments upon yourselves for a change.
For a brief shining moment HP had a future as something more than a toner cartridge seller.
I didn’t really think Oracle/Sun would have a real shot at being the Apple of enterprise. It’s now a distinct possibility.
Ouch! That’s got to hurd (LOL) Hewlett-Packard.
Here’s to the crazy ones!
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Ellison, like Jobs, is not an easy man to work for. He also knows, like Jobs, that it takes more than a charismatic CEO to make it last in Sillycone Valley. It’s a brilliant business decision. The timing is perfect.
The only joke here is one steps down because of a woman, and the other steps in because of a woman.
“The only joke here is one steps down because of a woman, and the other steps in because of a woman.”
As Chris Rock says “a man is as faithful as his options”. Wonder if he was talking about Phillips’ stock options.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
“Bill Clinton, Tiger Woods, Gary Hart, and John Edwards will be joining Oracle’s board next week.”
I’m sure there will be job opportunities for conservatives as well.
Maybe Mark Sanford can become involved when he isn’t roaming the pampas. Or Rush Limbaugh. Or good ol’ Newt “Sorry to hear your sick, now about this divorce” Gingrich.
Slighting a successful CEO for fudging his expense report or banging a consultant on the side is akin to booting a beautiful woman out of bed for the mole on her little toe.
“But…but…those flaws scale up to larger decisions!” No they don’t.
If you’re not comfortable with the fact that extraordinarily talented leaders are usually flawed individuals, you’re not making high-level hiring decisions. I recommend passing judgment from the comment sections of tech blogs. Oh wait…
@MCCFR
I didn’t know Tiger Woods was a liberal. Guess when you’re hellbent on politicizing someone else’s comment, you’re prone to generalizing. Thanks for your contribution.
I agree Hurd will help Oracle. While I think not much of Oracle, and their products, they have done a myriad of acquisitions over the last 10 years that have yielded very little. Milking maintenance fees, half hearted updates.
I see Hurd taking charge of that issue and making compelling gains in consolidating those acquisitions.
Definitely a good hire from a strategic standpoint. Not sure how the board of directors expect to manage him from a ethics / compliance standpoint.
@TheMacAdvocate…
Sorry, did I bring up Clinton, Hart and Edwards?
No, I didn’t.
Superior Being was deliberately citing Democrat names as a cheap shot in pre-election season. You know it, I know it, he knows it.
The difference is I’m willing to call him on it and counter-attack, whereas you’re willing – for whatever reason – to condone it.
So, to summarise, bite me!
The contest is on!

@MCCFR
The difference is that I don’t care. This is a Mac news blog. Let it go. Perpetuating a political argument in the comment section of a tech blog? How very adult.
“The difference is I’m willing to call him on it and counter-attack…”
LOL. Go get ’em!
