“Mobile carriers are struggling to keep pace with consumer demand for Apple’s iPhone 4 and their frustration is starting to surface,” Andrew Colley reports for The Australian.

“As of yesterday, Telstra was the only carrier provider able to confirm it had stocks of the handset available,” Colley reports. “Online stores operated by Optus and its Virgin brand, and Vodafone Hutchison Australia’s Vodafone and 3 brands, all indicated they were out of iPhone 4 stocks. Most stores were advertising delivery times of between two and three weeks.”
“When asked whether Apple was doing an adequate job meeting demand, most carrier’s were reluctant to criticise the device maker publicly,” Colley reports. “But a spokesman for VHA was prepared to say customer waiting times were becoming excessive. ‘I think it’s a fairly obvious point that there’s high demand there and we don’t like to keep customers waiting for a device they want to get their hands on,’ the spokesman said. ‘Even one to two weeks, or up to three weeks, waiting time is not ideal.'”
“A spokeswoman for Apple said the company was working hard to get the iPhone 4 into the hands of customers,” Colley reports. “‘Shipments of the iPhone 4 continue to be made,’ she said.”

I FINALLY got my iPhone 4. And I didn’t even wait 3 weeks for it.
I can’t get over how beautiful this screen is.
There are virtually no iPhone 4 available in Canada either. None of the carriers have any. On line they will take 3 weeks or more to arrive. There are constant line-ups outside of Apple Stores. It’s been available in Canada for over a month and the demand hasn’t died down yet.
A nice girl at Radio Shack (I know!) got me mine in about 7 hours. YOU ROCK, CYNTHIA!

How do you like the camera?
Another blockbuster quarter for Apple…
@ breeze
I got it late last night, so I haven’t had much time to test it yet. Mostly using Hipstamatic (which either crashed or ran prohibitively slow on my old phone) quality is noticeably better than the original iPhone of course, but give me a couple days to get a better idea.
If these guys put cash up front, I believe apple will accommodate them. Of coursse all of them believed that the ws conjured antennagate. They probably were relishing the thought that apple would now have to lower prices.

@ Federico
Unless you have evidence to support your accusations, I would suggest you guard your mouth.
Better yet, cover your asshole. It seems to have moved up to your face.
@MDmac: nice.
Where Federico gets the idea that Apple is holding back is anyone’s guess. The world rarely sees what has happened with the iPhone and iPad. About the closest thing I can think of were Cabage Patch Dolls, and that was only for 2 months before Christmas one year. Maybe the Wii. And neither came anywhere close to the scale of the iPhone.
Apple is constrained by component manufacturers and supply chains, while delivering a quarter-million devices daily. There’s nothing about it that “a little cash upfront” can fix. Dumbass.
P.s. My magic word to post this was ‘fire’. I wonder if that was because I was posting a flame.
I was quoted 3months unless we buy it outright from the apple retail store, that way it’ll take 2-3 weeks
So, Apple has several products that people just can’t do without and they are having to live with 2 and 3 week back orders. And the stock is pushed down to the $240 to $255 price range all sumer long. Seem odd yet? Apple grows at 35% to 50% with huge profits and the stock is chained down while someone buys up the shares on the cheep.
This will have to jump soon! Tsunami coming!!!
Can’t keep a good stock down
Here in NL, my wife got hers 5 weeks after ordering it (on the very first day it was officially available).
I ordered mine the day after (because our 3G and 3GS got stolen the night before…), and had to wait another 2 weeks, got it only last Friday.
So T-Mobile – or at least the small shop I go to – needed nearly 2 months to supply the people that had pre-ordered (which was possible in a 3-hour window only, after which it was closed down due to overwhelming demand), that ordered the very first day, and the 2nd day of it’s availability…
The guy in the shop said that, although they were getting new shipments in several times per week, the waiting list just kept getting longer and longer.
Wonder how long people ordering now will have to wait…
Guess the same holds for the iPad: each and every one of these devices made was already sold long before (even 4-times over).
Bloodbath?
Here in HK, I waited for more than 3 weeks, and then received a SMS from the carrier that told me to collect it within 3 days, otherwise, it’s back to square one =(
In Mexico, Telcel (american Movil from Carlos Slim) and Movistar (Telefonica from Spain)have available, but nobody wants to buy it because Apple will sell it directly factory unlocked, and we are waiting for that.
Unfortunately, it has a 3 week wait to buy it from apple.
I jumped in the lake by my house a month ago with my iPhone4 in a hipcase. 30secs later, I got out and checked my poor iPhone. It still worked, but I shut it down and stuck it in a bag of rice for a week. After, I pulled it out and hit the power button, no go, it was dead. I then plugged it into my computer to give it a charge, and it came back to life! It was only drained!
After thorough testing I found that the on-off button is the only thing that doesn’t work, and that is something I can live with, if necessary. No screenshots, no manual turning off. No hard resets.
Having said that, I had already contacted my credit card company while my iPhone was in a bag of rice and started the return process. I needed to go and get a new one at the Apple Store, pay the $200 fee, and that fee would be reimbursed to me.
So, I went this weekend, worried that they wouldn’t have any units for exchange, and guess what? They replaced my iPhone with a new one under WARRANTY?!? I told them I had gotten the iPhone wet, but they opened it up and said the internal sensor had not tripped, and in fact, they had yet to see one where the internal moisture sensor has been tripped. So, they exchanged it under warranty!?! What could I say? No, I want to pay? I already told them I had begun an insurance claim with my credit card company.
That was weird, cause I’m an Apple shareholder, and Apple just ate that exchange when they could have easily let my credit card insurance take care of it.
It is the same scenario in Singapore. One of the telco here actually setup special counter to take pre-order, and one counter for customer to collect their order, just for iphone 4. and constant you see the sign ‘Iphone 4 is currently out of stock’ at retail shops.
I’m wondering if you have to purchase this update, or update your iphone as a normal update?
