“The latest figures show us that over two thirds of Mac users on Steam own a MacBook or MacBook Pro, another 23 percent use an iMac,” Evans reports. “Overall (including PC land), 72 percent of processors are Intel, while the majority (59%)of graphics cards in gamerland come from Nvidia”

Evans reports, “Interesting stat for Windows: 32.73 per cent of users were still using Windows XP, which is currently celebrating its 9th birthday.”

  1. I have been using Steam since it’s release on the Mac. I LOVE IT! – I have a 27″ iMac with the 3.06gh cpu.. Never had a problem with it. The games are only 9.99 – 20.00 per game.. Not bad at all!

  2. Mac users there represent the total of 5%. About 85% of Mac users are on Snow Leopard, the rest on Leopard. Compare that with Windows 7 not even a majority (combined 32 and 64-bit versions make up around 41%), followed by XP (!!!). Tells you how good these newer OS versions really are…

I’d say more like 126 in computer years, though. Why? Well, let’s say the average dog lives to be 10 or 12. The average useful life for most computers (unless you don’t mind being completely obsolete) is probably 5 or 6 years. Thus, you’d double it to 14 per human year rather than 7.

So XP is now older than the longest living person in recorded history. A triumph of engineering, eh?

I know that you are joking, but your statement took me back to the beginning of Mac OS X. I was hoping then that OpenGL would become dominant over the proprietary DirectX from Microsoft. But M$ has kept on plugging on the evolution of DirectX and continues to use it to control the gaming and video card markets in an attempt to marginalize the Mac and other competitors.

    Darn that DirectX!!

    But.. but.. but..
You need a Super Uper High End PC to play games and Macs are not gaming computers….. Where is a stupid PC fan when you need it?
    lol

  6. @KingMel,
Yeah. It’s a take on Ballmy’s comment about the iPhone “not being a very good email machine” because “it doesn’t have a keyboard”.

I guess software-based keyboards are a tough concept to wrap that chrome dome around.

  7. Game is expensive? Hmm, that funny. If you feel that way, why did you buy expensive MacBook pro? I assume if you buy it, you just can afford to buy any game you want. That’s pathetic.

  8. Since the majority of Macs being sold recently are laptops, it seems pretty obviously that the majority of Steam users would be using MacBooks or MacBook Pros. If the majority were using iMacs, Mac minis, and Mac Pros, THAT would have been surprising.

I like Steam. I “bought” Portal when it was FREE, which got me on Steam. Then, because it was so much fun, I bought a special bundle of five games for $20. I don’t play games all the time, so I still haven’t played through those games. Steam is like iTunes for Mac games; I think it’s an excellent idea and well executed.

  9. I use Steam on a 2008 iMac and I love it despite imperfections like incompatible videos and a small amount of Mac games. The games run well and the prices are fair. There are also a few more Mac games available on it than the Mac Games page would lead you to believe, like Machinarium for one. Looking forward to the Left 4 Dead ports.
