“Welcome to the patent that’s all about the next generation telephonic MacBook,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“For Macites who are road warriors, this could definitely be the patent of the year for you,” Purcher reports. “With LTE and other 4G networks rolling out in 2011, it’s clear that Apple is preparing to deliver some pretty interesting MacBooks for us to get excited about in the coming months and years. It’s equally clear that Apple has been exploring and testing out several next generation antenna technologies since April of 2008. And while Apple’s patent shows us a few of the ways that the telephonic antenna could be implemented in the MacBook, the patent also opens the door to some rather interesting twists that could spice things up for the next generation MacBook.”

Purcher reports, “Apple touts that they’re the leading portable devices company in the world – and this patent shows us once again that Apple’s engineers are out to stay number one for many years to come. According to Apple’s patent, the MacBook may handle communications over one or more communications bands. For example, wireless communications circuitry in the MacBook may be used to handle cellular telephone communications in one or more frequency bands and data communications in one or more communications bands.”

These engineers did not get the memo that said the Mac is dead.

Are you getting this?
Now we’re talking. Get it out the door Apple ASAP!
Sound as if they’re thinking of a glass top and doing away with the trackpad. Interesting food for thought.
Does this guy write for Time magazine? There is more fluff, build-up and repetition than actual story.
The nitinol antenna is the best in my view. Too bad we have to wait until next year, but the author is right. LTE will be the right standard to kick this off with. Next xmas looks promising.
Touch screen = foldable tablet. Say no more. I’m in. As for the glass notebook idea, i think that’s a disaster waiting to happen. But it’s not a sure thing anyways. Metal is better.
….and you all wanted tethering? How old school.
That glass surface with or without the keyboard is interesting because Apple could add a mini iPhone for a phone pad, icons for games and apps. A glass surface really opens up possibilities.
@acid. Thank goodness the engineers didn’t get the memo. The day the Mac dies, I’ll switch.
Thumbs up.
The Dell copycat version is slated to have a rotary dialer.
Apple is playing catch up with notebooks with 3G built in. They should shove this out the door pronto for this christmas not next year. By then they’ll just be following the pack again and there’s not excuse that Jobs could give like they’re doing it better. Apple is already late to the party so get on with it already!
