Analyst sees RIM unveiling ‘iPhone killer’ next week

“Shares of BlackBerry smartphone maker Research In Motion Ltd. jumped early on Wednesday on speculation it is set to unveil a long-awaited touchscreen handset designed to battle Apple Inc’s popular iPhone,” Nicole Mordant reports for Reuters.

“RIM is expected to announce the launch of the slider 9800 handset at a joint BlackBerry-AT&T Inc. event in New York next Tuesday morning,” Mordant reports. “‘The timing makes sense (for this to be the 9800 launch),’ said Avian Securities analyst Matt Thornton.”

Mordant reports, “RIM’s share of the North American market has been eroded by the easier-to-use touchscreen iPhone… Carrier AT&T, initially, is expected to get exclusive U.S. rights to sell the new BlackBerry handset, analysts said. ‘We expect the new RIM slider to receive ‘hero’ treatment from AT&T, and for the carrier to promote the product aggressively,’ Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum said in a note to clients.”

  1. Prediction: lead in the announcement: Our phone has an antenna that is engineered and designed to send and receive data reliably and maintain phone calls even if you are holding the phone any way you want.

    “Hot spots” – none
“Death Grip” – grab and grip any way you want
    “Attenuation” – not an issue
“A Case” – take it or leave it – doesn’t matter
“User Love” – ours is greater than Steve’s

A smart phone without the headaches. IT JUST WORKS!

  2. Sure a lot of cheerleaders posting today. It is like a high school pep rally. We’re number one, we’re number one. Realize one day there will be a phone to challenge iPhone. Maybe this one, maybe not this one, but they are getting closer, what with Apple blunders. How is AAPL today? Hmmm not so good.

  3. Breaking news for HughB: “THIS IS AN APPLE ENTHUSIASTS WEB SITE. GET IT? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE PREMISE? HAVE YOU CRACKED THE CODE YET? If you are expecting something other than some Apple cheerleading you are not very smart….but I think we already knew that.

  4. I thought Storm was the Blackberry “touchscreen” phone. Bottom line… If RIM has totally redone their phone OS so that it’s not a shimmed and propped up PDA-class OS, then they have a shot at being somewhat popular. But if it’s more of the same, then it will be just another “iPhone killer” that has come and gone.

  5. lol
    Another iphone killer……..
Just look at the stock price when the announcement was made official… exactly, nothing happened…
Look at Verizon’s stock price when there was rumors about a iPhone for verizon, shares when up..

I believe that says everything about “iphones Killers”

  6. @HughB- “How is AAPL today? Hmmm not so good.” You’re clearly new to this. Stocks move up and down over short term. Market in general down about the same today. Perhaps once you figure out how to work your PeeCee you could find a way to analyse AAPL over last year? Last 5 years? Last 10? Last 30?

Get back under your bridge with your friends where you can enjoy that short crappy RIM/Droid/Windoze riddled life.

  7. @CrizzoDesigns,

“Do these companies realize it is not the iPhone that sells, it is the apps and iTunes that people flock too!! “

Well to a large degree yes, but many of us would still flock to the iPhone itself. Look at how many people upgrade each year.

Still, there are a bunch of people who will see a phone that looks like the iPhone and get it instead. I have a bunch of friends who I’ve had this conversation with:

    Friend: I’m thinking about getting a phone…

Me: Get an iPhone. Trust me. For the love of God, get an iPhone. Your life will be much better. The grass will be greener, the sky will be bluer, your shirt will be whiter. All will be right in the world forever after.

Friend: I got a Xl3GU or something phone.
Me: Why? What did I tell you?

Friend: It’s just like an iPhone but it’s cheaper. It’s only $99.
Me: You can get an iPhone for that…or even less.

Friend: But it still does everything the iPhone does…pictures, music, video, etc…
    Me: No, it doesn’t

    A month later…

Friend: Show me how to get videos, pictures and music on my phone. How do I get all those games and things your phone does.
Me: Just launch iTunes…wait…you didn’t get an iPhone did you?

Friend: No, but it does all those things, I just need you to tell me how.
Me: Oh, it’s easy. You have a PC right?…because you know, you didn’t listen to me about buying a Mac either, did you? Ok, and on your PC you have Internet Explorer, right? Because you didn’t listen to me about using Safari, Firefox, Chrome, or Opera, right? So, that’s actually ok. Make sure all of your Antivirus software is up to date and properly configured with your firewall, and then launch Internet Explorer and use that.

Friend: I can use Internet Explorer to get all those wonderful things on my phone?
Me: Sure, go to ebay.com and list your current phone for sale. Then go to Apple.com and order a new iPhone.

  8. @ REALTORben

I sent in the article to MDN. The article was posted on Yahoo Finance with the phrase “iPhone killer” in the Yahoo headline. MDN did not change much.

  9. dammit the iphone killers graveyard is full, apple is going to have to buy more property just to burry these would be assassins. It looks like a scene from AI (its just so sad to see all the forgotten androids)

  10. @ REALTORben
Here is the exact headline from Yahoo Finance:
“RIM seen unveiling “iPhone killer” next week”
You can see for yourself the massive changes made.

  11. This will totally OWN the iPhone. As in, anybody still using the original iPhone, and hasn’t seen or heard about any of the newer models of iPhone or even Android devices, and just now happened to go into a store and compared the RIM phone against his original iPhone, probably would switch to the RIM device.

Of course, tomorrow, when he looks up from his phone and see’s any number of ads for the iPhone 4, he probably would wind up going back to the store that sold him the RIM device and force them to take it back and exchange it for the newest iPhone.
