RUMOR: Apple clearing iPad, iPhone 4 waiting lists; could sell 1 million iOS devices this weekend

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Currently, if you go to an Apple retail store and can’t find an iPad or iPhone 4, Apple will offer the ability to reserve one for you,” The Boy Genius reports. “Apple is apparently incredibly interested in clearing out these waiting lists, and if our tipster is correct, they’re aiming to do it by this weekend.”

“Apparently all Apple stores have asked employees for an ‘all hands on deck’ approach this weekend, somewhat similar to that of Apple product launch days,” The Boy Genius reports. “We have even been informed that Apple stores might open early on Sunday to accommodate extra traffic.

The Boy Genius reports, “Our source let us know that clearing out these lists could result in the sale of up to an additional 500,000 to 1,000,000 iOS devices in just a few short days.”

  1. I called the Apple Store 8 days ago and was put on a wait list for a 16 gb iPad. I was told Sunday July 23rd would be a “first come first serve” day to sell all unclaimed iPads.
Finally got the “your iPad is here” email today, but I got it from Best Buy on Monday.

  2. @ Scott
No the massive shipment should have already taken place to be in the channel by Sunday! They need to clear off the lists of guys like “InfoSponge” who got on the wait list, but instead bought from some other source (best buy or AT&T)

  3. @Futuremedia. White ones? Let’s not bring race into this ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />.

(by the way, what’s that strange symbol after your post?)

  4. In terms of sales, it doesn’t really matter if the waiting list is short or long, or if there is on-hand inventory at stores. The rate of sale can never exceed the rate of production. And the rate of production cannot exceed the rate suppliers provide iPhone and iPad components for production.

Apple will keep selling iPhones and iPads as fast as they are being produced, at least until the end of this quarter and probably until after the Holiday quarter is over.

So the primary factor affecting iPhone and iPad sales is Apple’s ability to ramp production rate, not waiting lists. If Apple was able to suddenly produce enough iPhones and iPads to clear off all of those waiting lists, that would be impressive (but it seems unlikely).

  5. is so crazy, but i was in new york visiting an att store at the beggining of july.. and i was so awed by holding an iphone 4 demo unit(first time doing so) that i totally ignored a girl telling me the release date all i remember was, yeah the white iphone is not available, it will be on the 24th of july, but i didnt really listen b/c i was playing with the iphone, im pissed i didnt find out more from her!!

  6. @ alexboy,

I’m not sure if you’ve seen the Saturday Night Live skit with William Shattner where they have a mock up Trekki Convention where a bunch of hard core Star Trek fans are all dressed up and he just goes off, “Look, it was just a TV show, move on. You there, have you ever kissed a girl..?”

Your post reminded me of that!!

  7. @FatMac: That’s a pair of eyes looking at my post from the Japanese Emoji part of their keyboard.    etc etc. Just add the Japanese language to your keyboard – I’m using an iPad for this – then you just hit the Globe key to switch to Japanese, type “emoji”, and all the different faces and other symbols are at your disposal to choose to add color and fun to your posts.    All sorts of pictures.

  8. I’m looking for a good iPad case. I really don’t like leather cases and I’m not a big fan of black or clear cases either, so it’d be nice if it had some color. Also, I tried out the official iPad case from Apple and I really didn’t like it that much.
