RUMOR: Apple prepping smaller Apple iPad models with OLED touchscreens

invisibleSHIELD case for iPad“Despite the high cost of OLED displays and Apple’s continued support of LCD screens with IPS technology, rumors of a next-generation iPad with an OLED screen continue to resurface,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.

“Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes reported on Tuesday that its sources within overseas component makers indicated that Apple plans to launch a second-generation iPad as soon as the fourth quarter of 2010,” Oliver reports. “The new hardware would reportedly use 5.6-inch and 7-inch OLED displays, with Compal Electronics in the running to supply Apple.”

Oliver reports, “The new models would be in addition to Apple’s successful 9.7-inch iPad, which would receive ‘some minor changes,’ the report said. The smaller 5.6-inch and 7-inch iPad models would ‘mainly target the e-book reader market, separating them from the 9.7-inch model, which mainly targets multimedia entertainment,’ the report said.”

  1. I don’t see that a change in the screen size would be a Plus. The current size is quite wonderful. Taking away from the screen size would put the iPad at a disadvantage. IMHO. LCD is fine for me.

  2. Doubtful. Why would Apple take on the additional development and marketing expense of a new model so soon, when they can’t even keep up with demand on the current model? Apple is probably still ramping up production as the worldwide rollout continues. Plus there is no viable competition for iPad.

Sometime in the first half of 2011, there will probably be a revision, although it seem unlikely that iPad will go OLED.

  3. I have a very hard time believing APple’s going to put a device between iPhone/iPod Touch and the iPad. They’ll keep the iPad at 4x the size of iPhone/iPod Touch to keep development sensible, and keep consumer choices clear.

The next big improvement in the iPad will be the Retina Display. I’ll be *very* surprised (and pretty disappointed) if the RD doesn’t find its way into the next gen iPad.

  4. I agree, why goto OLED with production limitations and the fact that the Retina Display is so clean!

Next improvement will be Retina Display and Face Time. Board improvements to support 512 or improve up to one gig of addressable memory.

    Maybe a iPad Bumper! LOL
    Had to add that!

  5. Besides, OLED displays are battery hogs – a regressive implementation that Apple would never contemplate. Just expect Retina Display for the next iteration of the
iPad – plus a few more goodies.

  6. This is not going to happen. Apple isn’t going to be using OLED any time soon, but also think of all of the developers that would have to rewrite their apps AGAIN for different resolution screens. There’s no reason for this.

  7. They could be for a low cost multi-touch / game control devices for the next AppleTV or Mac mini that is HD connected to your home HDTV. (Not everyone has extra iPhones, iPod touch and iPads sitting around. You need several for multiplayer use anyway.)

You all need to think about Apple’s next market that they want. The apps will be running in the next OS X on those Mac mini Home Entertainment Centers with a Internet connection to that BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARM that Apple is running in the Carolinas (THAT NO ONE TALKS ABOUT).

  8. If there’s to be a different sized iPad, it will be one size up, not one size down.
But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a rev that gives it a camera and a little performance boost- maybe even a Retina display.

  9. I doubt that a smaller screen will make the gadget any more useful. So instead of the original glass slate that is a completely crippled laptop, we will have a completely crippled, smaller laptop.

There was a couple in front of me in line for the iPhone 4 on launch day each with a revolutionary ipad. I watched them for a while – the guy was playing with a game and his wife was surfin’ news sites. I asked them what else they did with the magical device and the guy responded – I swear this is what he said: “what else is there?”!

  10. Wow–so many folks on this thread just don’t get it! Even though I love my iPad as it is, there is a definite “sweet spot” between the current iPad screen size and the iPod Touch screen size. Not as a replacement for anything, but in addition to the current line-up. There are a lot of people and businesses who would prefer that in-between screen size, in addition to all the consumers who like the current sizes. There are still plenty of potential customers who haven’t bought either of the current options–so why leave that terrain to the competition?
BTW, there are VERY few who would buy a touch device larger than the current iPad–now THAT is a niche!

  11. What Apple is working on is that magical, invisible screen hinge.

Hold the iPad in landscape mode and imagine closing it like a book. When Apple perfects that, they will sell ten times as many.
