“For some parts of the world its not a big deal to have an unlocked phone, including an unlocked iPhone. That said, we here in the US are bound by phones tied to specific carriers — including the iPhone 4 with AT&T,” Robert Nelson reports for TFTS. “Needless to say, that is where the iPhone Dev Team has come in handy in the past — by offering unlocks giving iPhone users the ability to choose from a carrier other than AT&T.”
“Of course, unlocking iPhones has always been a cat and mouse game between the Dev Team and Apple. Thankfully the Dev Team seems to be able to stay ahead, though sometimes it takes a little time. Such being the case with the iPhone 4, which ended up needing a complete re-write of the software used to perform the unlock,” Nelson reports. “With that, it did take a little time, but it looks like we have good news for those looking for an unlocked iPhone 4 as the Dev Team, or more specifically PlanetBeing announced that it had been done.”
Nelson reports, “The message came short and sweet by way of Twitter…”

It will be interesting to see if unlocked phones have reception any issues
When using different carriers.
No news for Europeans… Governement regulations are a good thing, free market isn’t always nice to the customers…
I think only T-Mobile is iPhone hardware compatible.
Didn’t they mean “short and tweet”?
What other carriers in the US can support the iPhone at native ATT speeds. Barring the moments that it crawls under the strain.
Great, weeks of work for little to nothing in the US. Maybe when Verizon lights up the GSM system and joins the rest of the world. TMobile, unless it’s changed, is slower than my 2G iPhone was. That was with the iPhone 3G!
Go hack around with the android. In the US the choice is basically ATT.
Nor are government regulations nice to customers. Private companies can be changed by not supporting the offending group. Governments are much harder to change.

You don’t have democracy in the US? Sorry to hear that…
Now, if they will just release UltraSn0w to the world in the next week. I would like to be able to tether my iPhone 4 next week while I’m away on business and I really don’t feel like succumbing to AT&T;’s usurious tethering plan for the three times a year I’d need it.
I’d think doing an exploit would be fairly easy. The browser is pretty easy to crash. I love it, but damn it, Apple, fix your damned browser.
“Of course, unlocking iPhones has always been a cat and mouse game between the Dev Team and Apple.”
I don’t agree.
I have not seen any sign for a very very long time that Apple tries to counter this. Apple does what it does and as soon as they change something ppl think they are trying to stop this. Apple does not develop their products with this FAKE dev team in mind.
I’m not against unlocking. But why would you do that if you have a contract? Kinda stupid. But hacking the phone is something Apple should stop and ban all hacked devices from the App store and ban them from get any updates what so ever in the future.
