What developers think of Apple’s iAd

“It’s been about a week since Apple rolled out its new advertising platform, and developers of iPhone apps are watching the earliest returns to see how much money they can expect to make from these ads,” Jennifer Valentino-DeVries reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“One developer reported Thursday on Hacker News that he had earned $1,400 in one day via iAd, for a simple application that turns the flash on the iPhone 4’s camera into a flashlight,” Valentino-DeVries reports. “‘I was quite surprised at the first day numbers from yesterday,’ he told Silicon Alley Insider. ‘I hope it keeps up!'”

“The amount he was earning for each ad placed in his application was far higher than the figures seen with an Android application using Google’s AdMob, technology blog The Next Web reported,” Valentino-DeVries reports. “For every thousand iAds that showed up in the application, the developer earned about $148; the similar statistic from the AdMob ad was less than $1.”

“The difference between earnings for iAd and other mobile advertisements comes down to two main factors: Apple is charging advertisers a lot, and users are clicking through Apple’s ads far more than usual,” Valentino-DeVries reports. “The latter factor is likely to change as the novelty of an ad from Apple wears off, even among Apple fans.”

  1. As long as they keep the quality of the ads high, I plan to click on EVERYTHING that says iAd at least once. I’m impressed what they’ve done so far and if I can help out a dev, stay in the app AND enjoy the content, then it’s good for all.

  2. They are pricing their ads at a premium, which demands that the ads are very effective; otherwise they wouldn’t sell any at those prices.

    The ads are kept to a minimum, which gives them more exposure.

    Advertisers are happier, because they get much better results, Apple (and AAPL shareholders) is happy, because they make more money, and consumers are happy, because there is very little intrusion from ads.

    Only Apple could pull this off! But that won’t stop others from coming along, and trying to copy their model.

    Yeah well $148 for a thousand iAds also is less than $1. Way less. $0.148 in fact, under 15 cents.

    I presume the high click through rate is also partly because the iAds are also more interesting, and have the ability to engage the user.

    So, while I do agree with the reporter, and have said the same myself, I think there are a lot of factors going on here.

  8. If the money developers make from iAd helps keep app prices low, then it’s probably a good thing. On the other hand, it seems like the business world is absolutely desperate to innundate consumers with ever greater volumes of advertising, which totally sucks no matter what form it takes. The bottom line: The only good ad is a dead ad.
