“Apple Inc.’s record-setting debut of the iPhone 4 has led to another surge: a flood of old iPhones hitting EBay, recyclers and discount sites,” Ryan Flinn reports for Bloomberg News.
“Gazelle.com, a site that buys electronics from consumers, purchased 20,000 used iPhones in the two weeks after Apple and AT&T Inc. began taking preorders for the iPhone 4,” Flinn reports. “That compares with 350 in a typical two-week period.”
“As of July 2, Gazelle offered $168 for a perfect-condition 32-gigabyte iPhone 3GS, last year’s model,” Flinn reports. “The company would have paid as much as $304 for the same product before the iPhone 4 came out, Kennedy said.”
“eBay Inc.’s site lists thousands of used iPhone 3GSs for sale, with prices starting as low as 1 cent. The number of iPhone 3 models — including the older 3G — rose 124 percent in the U.S. between June 5 and June 28, said Katherine Chui, a spokeswoman for the San Jose, California-based company,” Flinn reports. “eBay has also become a hub for people looking to make a profit on the iPhone 4, with the average selling price hitting $942, she said.”

Sold my iPhone 3GS on eBay for $350.
Bought my new iPhone 4 for $199.

The first iPhone 4 sold here in Finland in a local “eBay” (huuto.net) was sold right away at a price of 1089€ (originating from France, unlocked).
It’ll be here in a few weeks, still some people are willing to shell that kinda money

Watch the nuance in the CEO’s statement. Jobs will see thru this and hopefully refuse to give them the iPad or the iPhone. The guy is playing games in collussion with WS.
Next planted stories will be carriers’ re,octant to carry iPhone 4. The games these esteemed gentlemen play.
Hope jobs continue KT exclusivity.

“Sold my iPhone 3GS on eBay for $350.

How did you manage to qualify for the upgrade price when you had a 3GS? I bought the 3GS when it came out, and I won’t qualify until February. I’m dying to do the same thing you did but didn’t think it was possible.
The first word in this article’s titles is misspelled:
“Phone 4 launch floods market with used iPhone models.”
Apple cannibalizing their own past sales and “growing” laterally? Say it isn’t so! The PC sheep will soon be enlightened and Apple will dominate the world … they just gotta!
Good news though. I’d much rather upgrade my 3G to a 3GS for $200 than get locked into another 3yr Rogers contract.
I was able to unload my 32GB 3GS for $280 on Craigslist. I had to get the 32GB iPhone 4 for $499, though. No upgrade pricing for me. It’s been totally worth it!
Pre-Ordered a 16GB iPhone 4 on the 15th of June put my 16GB iPhone 3GS on Craigslist for $275 and I was eligible for a early upgrade paid $251.14 for iPhone 4, use the $275 I got from my old 3GS to pay for the iPhone 4 and the upgrade fee of $18 I did not put no new money to pay for my new iPhone 4, I will never sale my phones to online company it just a rip off to me, you get alot more if you sale it on your own
@El Guapo:
I have no idea… I got out of my original AT&T;contract 13 months early with no penalty from AT&T;!
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
I bought my iPhone 3GS in July 2009, so the contract should have expired in July 2011. However, AT&T;gave me an “early upgrade date” of December 2010 due to the amount of money I was spending on a monthly basis.
But then, when the iPhone 4 was announced, AT&T;gave “early early” upgrade dates to everybody whose upgrade dates fell in 2010. I suddenly fell into that category, so I qualified.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
@ El Guapo and MacBill–
The ATT contract is for 24 months of service, but it will allow you to upgrade your device without penalty after only 18 months.
ATT is waiving six months ini order for people to upgrade early.
So there you have it; you’re able to get a new iPhone 4 after as little as 12 months.
@ El Guapo and MacBill–
It is also based on what your monthly bill is with them – In my case the main phone on the family plan qualified early and the secondary phone (Translate $9.99 per month) does not. Even though they are 3GS both bought at the same time.
I qualified to upgrade at the absolute MINIMUM plan-500 minutes, no texting. I don’t think AT&T;’s promotion has anything to do with the monthly amount, certainly not the implication that higher monthly bills get favorable treatment.
Correction: 450 minutes
I got $200 for my like new with new battery I installed myself 16GB 3G the week before launch in a Craig’s List sale. Buyer was the only one who called. Still waiting for a WHITE 32 iP4 with my white on one side 3GS 32 and iOS 4. I sure hope they start letting us order this week.
In order to qualify each year your cell phone bill needs to either have the unlimited plan or the one right below it. Also I think you need to pay for the 1500 text plan or unlimited plan. I’ve qualified each year since 2007. So this is my fourth generation iPhone. If you have the base plan you will get at best $200 off the full price of the iPhone. For example if Apple charges AT&T;$699 for the 32GB iPhone and $599 16GB iPhone and to get the fully subsidize price AT&T;will cover $400 dollars for the 32GB one and you pay $300 or $200 for the 16GB one. Some people get a partial discount. Instead of $400 they get a $200 dollar discount.
@Neo well I only been with AT&T;for 12 months, paid my phone bills on time and I was eligible for a early upgrade, paid the $18 upgrade fee and the 16GB iPhone 4 only cost me $251.14 for being with AT&T;for a year, People just check on AT&T;website to see if your eligible, if you are my advice sale your 3GS on your own craigslist or eBay etc.. Then purchase your iPhone 4 with the money you got from your 3GS
@34Skyline same here. every 12 months I get the full discount to upgrade. You and I might have the same plan to get that discount. Those who have the base plan usually takes 18 months for them to get the discounted plan. However those who are on the business plan get screwed. It isn’t worth saving 8 bucks a month.
I’ll repeat for those that don’t read before they post:
I have the minimum plan-the very CHEAPEST plan available with no texting-repeat, the cheapest plan you can get in the US, and I qualified for an upgrade in !2 MONTHS, repeat 12 months
@El Guapo – if you have your phone for longer than 12 months you can upgrade for $18 plus the price of the phone – $199 or $299 depending on the phone!
to anyone in the know: can i buy a used iPhone (original, 3G or 3GS) and then use it with a pay as you go SIM card from one of the US providers?
Ditto what MacBill said…
I’m using my old 3GS as an iPod Touch that mostly streams internet radio through my speaker systems located in my bedroom and “man cave.”
