“Apple’s iPad has inspired a new crop of pandering, uncritical ‘news’ stories. It has to stop,” John C. Dvorak opines for PC Magazine.
“They’re hyperventilating as they write. You can tell, somehow. They’re part of a new breed of breathless, swooning, OMG reviewers of (primarily Apple) products, services, and software. I’ve seen no evidence that they actually work for that company, despite the fact that they are mostly sycophantic promoters of all things Apple. This style of reviewing is beginning to sneak into everything,” Dvorak writes. “Are editors telling writers that this approach is okay?”
“Maybe they’re on the Apple payroll, or maybe they’re just insane,” Dvorak writes. “This non-critical approach to all things Apple needs to stop. The hyperbole is ridiculous. Perhaps everyone is fearful of the deluge of hate mail and vile comments you receive when you’re critical of an Apple product.”
Full article, with some trollish “iPad is useless” crapola, here.
MacDailyNews Take: We left out Dvorak’s stupidity in order to to focus on the reason why some people get a bit breathless over iPad: Their industry is dying around them and, gee, they’d really like for it to live, so they can continue to be employed. Get it now, John? Plus, the iPad is quite useful, thanks, regardless of the “thoughts” of an old curmudgeon who’s obviously never used one and who couldn’t even grasp the significance of the computer mouse when, along with the first Macintosh, Apple delivered one to him for review.
Dvorak must be the only man on the planet who gets paid over $250,000 a year to be stupid. So, he must get a bonus for saying something smart????
@Jay of DC “The iPad uses an experimental pointing device called a finger. There is no evidence that people want to use these things.”
Beautiful– lol
If I remember correctly, this idiot also called Windows a “sissified” operating system that would never compete with DOS, or words to that effect, circa 1990
use it for a day or two, in all parts of your life that you use a computer for, and you will figure out what the appeal is and where it works – in my experience:
1. unless you are genetically hooked to flash, it is an A+ web browser, quicker than my desktop
2. A+ email reader – I manage 4 accounts no problems
3. A+ book reader – I’ve read 6+ books; ibook, kindle app, stanza etc
4. A+ video & music player – high quality display, surprisingly decent sound on external speakers – everyone in a small conf room can hear it well; earbud sound good
5. A+ game player – ever growing
6. A+ app platform….bazillion apps – free and cheap: maps, gps, etc
7. A+ meeting platform —- can record meetings, take notes, draw, share, etc…it can act as your personal whiteboard
8. A+ touch interface — very quick, very responsive; app switching is close to instant;
9. A+ battery life — a true 10 hr minimum
…still a bit awkward getting files in and out….you have to synch wired or email – a global mobileme API within all apps would be wonderful;
IMMERSIVE is the word that best describes the experience….not having that keyboard between you and the screen makes an amazingly big difference for consumption of info…one that I wasn’t expecting;
I think John’s just a little bitter that he’s about to lose his bet with Leo Laporte over how many iPads will be sold this year.
Microsoft Mediocrity Cult is losing it, big time!
Amusing to see these guys set their hair on fire, day in, day out. Now they’re asking for, nay, demanding, anti Apple FUD.
Jobs Derangement Syndrome…they’re doing it right.
John…
Can’t help it that you tied your lot with PC!
Take a clue from the PC crowd in DC and just say, “We inherited!”
As in…
‘inherited’ a buggy OS for many years
‘inherited’ relaxed security
‘inherited’ no eco-system
‘inherited’ a brown Zune
‘inherited’ a Kin One or Kin Two
‘inherited’ crappy tablets, no touch software, a stupid mammoth Surface table and a scrapped ‘Coourier’ vaporware cool concept tablet
Makes me glad to be the “Black Sheep” of the family and left out or THAT will!
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />
Pot meet Kettle…Kettle, meet Pot.
just my $0.02
Go shopping…
Buy:
a medium price Netbook PC
a portable dvd player
a mess of movies and tv shows
a half way decent priced mp3 digital music player
a Kindle or Nook
a portable Game Player
a mess of games
a digital Picture Frame
a fire/police scanner
a white noise (wind, waves, rain, waterfall) sound machine
a tape recorder
a big ass calculator
a credit card reader machine
and probably a few things I left out… get all these together and you’ll have an iPad.
Add the cost of all those and you’ll still owe less than what you would pay for the largest (64Gb) 3G iPad!
Indeed, Dvorak argues like a “Christian Conservative” — the kind that use ignorance as a source of pride.
I’ll write this here, I was about to post it to John’s site, but it requires a log on… I don’t want that.
So here goes:
Dear John.
…in about 5 yrs, I hope all things Microsoft and Windows will have become stunted, and collapsed.
I think that will be great, and we all can have a great time afterwards.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> That’s what it’s ALL ABOUT.
Hey, look, thats what I have been / am WAITING for!
-What will you write about then… good ol’ times?… One could create some kinda kindergarden centers for people just so they can busy themselves with mediocre software and OS’s… under surveillance!
Have a nice day.
Its terrible what Atheimers can do to the mind. However in his case one can hardly notice the difference. Strange that the only evidence of hacks being bribed into spouting fanboi dribble and anti Apple rhetoric were sponsored in all senses of that word by Microsoft. You might think that Dvorak is one of them, but I couldn’t possibly comment and to be frank delusion often operates totally of its own accord.
@John….’Everything Apple does is great, each product is revolutionary and anybody who dares to say anything critical about Apple is a fool.’
Sooooo…your point is?
Does anyone else hate the Vibrant hyperlink ads throughout everything you read?
Dvorak is a dope. He predicted that cable modems would fail and ISDN would prevail. Read for yourself:

What about the people who will stoop to any depth to find something critical to say about Apple and it products?
Maybe they’re on the [Microsoft] payroll, or maybe they’re just insane,” [KingMel] writes. “This non-critical approach to all things Windows PC needs to stop. The hyperbole is ridiculous. Perhaps everyone is fearful of the deluge of hate mail and vile comments you receive when you’re critical of [a Microsoft] product.
Personally, I am tired of the lemmings mindlessly spouting the meaningless catch phrases and sound bites provided by Apple’s competitors. And somehow they think that Mac users are mindless fanatics…
Listen you Mac heads. You just proved this writer’s point about the Mac herd going after anything that is said that is critical of Apple. Let’s see you take a chill pill and stop being negative about MS. But you can’t so you are hypocrites and just need to stop. Care to debate me on this as you will Lose. Like any company Apple has it’s strengths and weakness just like MS and if you remember who has the bulk of Operating Systems out there? It sure ain’t Apple. So take some criticism and stop sucking down everything Apple
Hey jerkoff, here’s a thought… They use Apples superior products, that outclass, outperform, and generally wipe the floor with it’s competitors, so they are loyal and want to let all the worlds lemmings know life doesn’t need to be hard. Just buy a mac!
@caddisfly: Ditto everything you’ve written plus:
A+ for iWork
A++ for staying connected on business trips interstate
A+++ for having won two client engagements worth well into five figures each!
My iPad (64GB 3G) has delivered ROI many, many times over in just two weeks of acquisition on launch day here in Sydney, Australia.
Beat that!
Dang it!
Shouldn’t have posted that – Dvorak might be reading…
@ Jacob456
…but, why take a chill pill.
‘We’ just proved the writer’s point, so what?
HE is not important to me, nor your admittedly civilized opinion.
What you said is OK, you know, but now, I don’t want to take a chill pill.
Cos…
I took exactly that all those years (decades) when there was no prospect of a change for the better (as in: Apple world domination… ) – all those years.
Now, I don’t wanna have to take chill pills any mower, I wanna frolick and speak my mind, and that is ‘MS has to vanish’. The sooner, the better. I have no reason to hold back on this for anyone. It’s one of my utmost wishes.
And having said this, I have just spoken my mind. That’s all.
Sorry. But all the best to you and thanks for reading.
In Dvoraks recent rants it show that he has truly become a dinosaur and is unable to see the future, like a “past his prime” prizefighter not knowing when to quit the game. It’s sad but telling that he has to do so by bashing one of the most innovative companies of the last ten years. Unfortunately he will not go out slaying the dragon but being eaten as a bitter snack and spit back out. His last gasp at trying to convince his advertisers that he is still relevant is to create hits by being a prognosticator of doom towards the victor no knowing when to admit he is wrong, out of touch and now the trudging dinosaur stuck in the tar pit. His crafty cutting tongue will not save him this time, instead it will bury him and his voice, once containing some reason to almost complete irrelevance. Sad to see him go out this way.
@sirrom your response is EXACTLY what he is talking about. But this is a fanboy site after all and not a real news site so that’s ok I guess. MDN is hate filled for anything not apple as are the fanboys. Every single defensive response here just proves him righter. I’m sure you make him laugh all the way to the bank!
@ Diggitydog
no, doesn’t prove him righter. in your mind, maybe.
I know.. does! – doesn’t! – does! – doesn’t! 😀
yeah… you go on, then… your turn.
´We’ wish you a lot of fun at the MDN fanboy site. ha.
You idiots should realise his article is not about Apple, it’s about reporting.
They should be as critical about Apple as they are about any othe product.
It’s only fair to do so, also it helps Apple become even better if it’s criticized they can see what they may be doing wrong and improve upon it more. But if you only say “great job” they will not make it better.
